OUR HISTORY:
National Vacuum Equipment, Inc. was founded in 1980 by Bruce Luoma. The Company started as a retailer of vacuum pumps. Soon after it started, the Company secured the rights to exclusive distribution of the Battioni vacuum pumps in North America. This helped the Company to evolve into its current status as a wholesale supplier.
To reach the goal of becoming a full service supplier of vacuum system components, the Company began fabricating its own line of componentry, purchased and developed its own line of vacuum pumps, and began purchasing for resale various valves and accessories.
Today, NVE has full service machine and fabrication shops complete with CNC-controlled production equipment designed for close tolerance work. The company has a highly trained staff all of whom are dedicated to quality.

Components
SILENCERSNVE offers compatible silencers and filters for it’s blower product line, their performance specifications are listed below. If you choose to use different silencers, make certain they are capable of the performance of factory units.
14 | NVE Blowers www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
If using different silencers, they should be tested for effectiveness by blanking off the inlet and monitoring exhaust gas temperature with the blower running for at least one hour. The blower should not overheat. If the different silencers are heavier than the factory supplied units, we do not recommend attaching them directly to the blower as the extra weight may deform the housing casting and cause contact of the lobes to the housing resulting in failure. In this case you must use a flexible joint between the silencer and blower.
Particular attention should be given to the ballast air silencer. Because the ballast air filter is mounted outboard of the silencer, any foreign material in the silencer will be able to enter the blower on initial start up. Ballast air silencers should be inspected and cleaned internally as much as possible. Weld spatter has caused blower failure in the past. Care should also be take to locate the ballast air inlet away from the truck exhaust and blower exhaust to avoid blower over heating.
SYSTEM FILTERS
The system filters NVE offers can be mounted directly to the inlet flange or remotely mounted. If you choose to use a different filter, we recommend that filter to be at least as efficient and have equal or better flow capacities as the factory supplied units. The filters supplied by NVE are a combination of polyester and stainless steel screen and are cleanable. We would recommend a filter of similar construction.
NVE Blowers | 15www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
BALLAST AIR FILTERS
The ballast air filters NVE offers are mounted. on the outboard side of the ballast air silencer. (See Page 47) If you choose to use a different filter, we recommend that filter to be at least as efficient and have equal or better flow capacities. The filters supplied by NVE are a combination of polyester and stainless steel screen and are cleanable. We would recommend a filter of similar construction.
FOUR WAY VALVE AND HOSES
If you intend to operate your blower in the pressure mode you will need a four way valve. The valve sizes supplied by the factory are as follows. B743 -4”, B953-6”, B1435-6”. If you do not use the factory supplied units, we would recommend valves of comparable size. We would also recommend you plumb your system with hose of a size equal to the valve size.
PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
If you intend to use your blower in the pressure mode, you must also use a pressure relief valve. We recommend you use a Kunkle pressure relief valve as they have been proven to work well and have sufficient flow capacity. The valves we supply are factory set to relieve at 10 P.S.I. and are sealed. We do not recommend our blower be operated over 10 P.S.I. and we do not recommend you use imported relief valves.
16 | NVE Blowers www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
VACUUM RELIEF VALVES
Vacuum relief valves are typically not needed with our blowers. If your application indicates the use of a vacuum relief valve would be called for, we recommend you thoroughly test your blower system to confirm the desired performance is reached. (i.e. tank protection, overheating protection). We would recommend the use of a high quality vacuum relief valve such as a Kunkle.
CHECK VALVES
If you intend to use your blower in the pressure mode you will need a check valve in the ballast air system and also on the exhaust port. If you intend to use your blower for vacuum only, you need only the check valve on the exhaust port. The check valve we supply are listed below, do not use a smaller valve.
PRIMARY SHUTOFF
The primary shutoffs recommended are listed below. If you don’t use a factory supplied shutoff, we recommend the use of a shutoff of comparable size or larger. It is critical to the proper operation of your system that a shutoff of smaller size not be used.
SECONDARY SHUTOFF
The secondary shutoffs recommended are listed below. If you don’t use factory supplied shutoff, we recommend the use of a shutoff of comparable size or larger. It is critical to the proper operation of your system that a shutoff of smaller size not be used.
BAG HOUSE
Bag houses are typically used for pumping dry material. Specifying a proper bag house depends on the frequency and type of dry material being pumped. If you will be pumping dry material consult the factory for a recommendation.

MOUNTING
The mounting plate is important when mounting a blower. It must be stout enough to carry the weight of the blower and accessories and not flex when the blower is in operation. It must also be flat and clean so as to not put a bind on the blower housing when it is fastened to the plate. We recommend you attempt to rock the blower on it’s mounting before the bolts are tightened. If any movement in is detected, you must shim the feet until there is no movement.
DRIVE SYSTEM
All NVE blower input shafts are equipped with an outboard roller bearing. This allows for the use of V and clogged type belts. When designing a drive system, consult your suppliers technical information to insured a proper installation.
In general the following applies:
• Insure the blower is turning in the proper direction
• Mount pulleys as close to the blower as possible to avoid excessive overhung load.
• Drive couplings must be mounted within manufacturers specifications.
• Belts and pulleys must be of sufficient size and quantity to transmit sufficient power. If using V-belts, use matched sets, if a belt goes out, replace the whole set.
• Belts and pulleys must be guarded
• Power shafts and U-Joints must be large enough to handle the load.
• Check with your supplier to confirm how much P.T.O. shaft angularity is allowed.
• Hydraulic motors, pumps and cooling system must be of a sufficient size and capability to properly power the blower continuously.
NVE Blowers | 19www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
OPERATION
• Turn blower by hand prior to startup to confirm it is not frozen or jammed.
• Check oil level in gear cases daily. Top off as needed.
• Check ballast air and system filters daily.
• Do not operate blower without guards in place.
• Do not engage “Hot-Shift PTO’s” outside of manufacturer’s specifications.
• Wear hearing protection if necessary.
• Take care not to touch blower when hot.
• Do not operate the blower beyond is highest rated speed.
• Drain the moisture trap daily.
• Check exhaust temperatures regularly. If the blower is starting to overheat, check the ballast air filter for restrictions or slightly relieve the vacuum.
TEMPERATURE
• Maximum operating exhaust temperature is 300 degrees F.
• Maximum inlet-exhaust temperature differential is 250 degrees F.
• When starting a blower in temperatures below 50 degrees F, do not allow the blower to develop more than 20” hg vacuum for the first 15 minutes of operation. The rotors heat up faster than the housing. This will allow for even heating of all parts and the blower will maintain proper clearances.
• Extra caution is required when operating the blower ambient temperatures above 100 degrees F. Or at lesser temperatures with high humidity.
20 | NVE Blowers www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
MAINTENANCE
• Oil in end plates should be changed every 1000 hours or six months. If the blower is operated in a very high vacuum-high temperature environment on a regular basis, oil change intervals should be shorter.
• Oil tank plugs need to be air tight. Use thread sealer and tighten plugs sufficiently.
• Use only recommended synthetic oil or equal.
• Filters should be cleaned daily.
• System and ballast air filters should be changed every 1000 hours of operation.
• Blower Housing and Manifold should be kept clean to allow heat to radiate out.
• If the blower is flooded it can be cleaned using the following procedure
• Remove inlet filter, exhaust and ballast air silencers.
• With high pressure water, clean intake exhaust and ballast areas.
• Have an assistant slowly turn the input shaft as you clean the lobes with water.
• Run the blower at the slowest speed possible and continue to spray water into the machine until the discharge has only clean water
• Run blower and spray a small amount of penetrating oil into the intake and run until no liquid comes out of the exhaust.
NVE Blowers | 21www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
(NOTE - DO NOT SPRAY OIL INTO THE BLOWER WITH SILENCERS IN PLACE)
• Disassemble the manifold and examine the silencers for signs of contamination. If the blower was flooded it is highly probable the exhaust silencer has material in it as well. Clean it out as best you can. The same holds true for the ballast air silencer.
• When everything is clean and dry, reassemble the manifold. Make sure to tighten blower flange bolts evenly.
• Oil tanks are full when oil level is in the middle to top of the oil sight.
RECOMMENDED LUBRICANT
We recommend that high quality ISO 220 synthetic gear oil be used in our blowers. Synthetic oils are much more resistant to break-down due to heat than normal oil. If a synthetic is not available use ISO grade 200 gear oil. Oils must have rust, foam and oxidation inhibitors. Synthetic:
1. Summit Syngear SH-7220
2. Mobil SHC 630 (32o to 90o)

TROUBLE SHOOTING
If the system has low or no vacuum check the following
• Inlet filter - clean.
• With the blower running and the filter clean and in position, place your hand on the filter to confirm normal air movement. If no air movement is noticed remove the exhaust silencer and check for air movement at the filter again. If there is movement at this time you have a plugged exhaust silencer or manifold.
• Moisture trap - full, shut off.
• R.P.M. too slow, worn belts, hydraulic or drive system problems.
• Plugged or collapsed hoses. (You can’t always see a collapsed hose from the outside).
• Leaks in the tank or fittings
• Four way valve not in proper position.
• Faulty relief valve.
Over Heating
• Ballast air filter dirty - clean.
• Over speed - slow blower
• Over vacuum - relieve vacuum
• Clearances in blower not adjusted properly.
NVE Blowers | 23www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
KnockingKnocking is an indication of the lobes being out of time. The timing of the lobes should be undertaken by a qualified repairman.
Oil LossExcessive loss of oil indicates seal failure or the seal ring vents are plugged.
REPAIR - REBUILDTo follow is a detailed instruction manual for the disassembly and assembly of blower. Like many things mechanical, it comes apart much easier than it goes together. Therefore, we recommend only qualified technicians attempt to repair NVE blowers.
*SPECIAL TOOLS
There are three tools of a special nature required to assemble a
NVE blower. .

24. Block up the end plates and tap out the bearings and O.D. seal sleeves, from the inside out.
23. Inspect the seal I.D. seal sleeves, bearing races and rotors for excessive wear
NVE Blowers | 31www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
25. Remember to mark each piece so they can be put back where they came from.
26. Remove the (4) hex head bolts located on the inside of the drive cover plate.
27. Turn the cover plate over and tap out the bearing then the seal.
32 | NVE Blowers www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
28. Scrape all old gasket material off.
29. Clean all the parts thoroughly and inspect the housing, end plates, cover plates and rotors for wear.
31. Check the seal assemblies for excessive wear, and the cast iron seal rings should spin freely in there grooves.
30. Check the bearings to make sure they spin freely and are not to loose or worn.
NVE Blowers | 33www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
32. Rubber seals and o-rings should be pliable, soft and free of any cracking. Replace any that are hard or cracked
33. Check housing for excessive wear
34. Seat new seals into the matching assembly and put on a new o-ring. Rebuild (2) of the seal assemblies
34 | NVE Blowers www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
35. Install the rebuilt seal assemblies into the drive end plate.
36. Insert new bearings into the drive end plate.
38. Using a ring compressor install the inside of the seal assemblies to complete the matching sets.
37. Install bearing retainers.
NVE Blowers | 35www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
39. Line up the dowel pins, and mount the drive end plate to the housing.
40. Brush some oil on to the seal assemblies.
41. Insert the rotors into the housing. Be careful not to rip the seal assembly I.D. o-ring on the threads of the drive rotor.
42. Slide the idler gear in place, lining up the key way slots.
36 | NVE Blowers www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
43. Push the key into place.
44. Bolt the gear retainer in place, and tighten the hex head cap screw to torque of 115 ft/lbs.
45. Slide the star washer in place, with the inside tang in the drive rotor key way.
NVE Blowers | 37www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
46. Tighten down the lock nut to 125 lb-ft to ensure the inner race dose not slip and bend a washer tang into one of the lock nut slots.
47. Slide the drive gear into place on the drive rotor.
48. Add the (7) socket head cap screws into place in the B-Lock retainer but do not tighten them. Align the two gears.
49. In order to properly time the blower (4) shims must be used (3) .004 shims and (1) .012. Place a .004 shim in between both lower lobes on the bottom rotor and the housing, and one above the top rotor upper lobe and the housing. Place the .012 shim between the top lobe on the lower rotor and the saddle of the upper rotor.
38 | NVE Blowers www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
50. The critical step in timing the blower is to make sure that both the upper and lower rotors are in exactly the same position rotationaly within .0005.
To accomplish this you will need a granite surface plate and a height gauge with a dial indicator calibrated in .0001 of an inch.
51. To do this use a height gage to make sure both lower lobes on the bottom rotor are at exactly the same height. Then using the tapped holes in the housing clamp them in place.
52. Then do the same to the lower lobes on the upper rotor, clamping them in place also.
53. After both rotors are in exactly the same place rotationaly and clamped in place tighten down the B-Lock retainer. Using a torque wrench set at 30 ft/lbs. Turn each cap screw 1/4 turns only and use a clockwise or counter clockwise rotation.
54. Seat the seal assemblies into the follower end plate.
55. Insert the bearings into the follower end plate. Attach the special retainer plates to keep the bearings in place until the follower plate is installed.
NVE Blowers | 39www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500

56. Turn the plate over and use a ring compressor to insert the inter seal assemblies.
57. Mount the follower end plate to the housing.
58. Tighten down the socket head cap screws to a torque rating of 105 ft/lbs.
59. Take off the special retainer plates, and install the proper bearing retainers.
NVE Blowers | 41www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
60. Install the oil slingers.
61. Tighten the hex head cap screws to 115 lb-ft.
62. Heat the bearing race to 225 F maximum and quickly slide it onto the drive rotor until it shoulders out (see Below).
42 | NVE Blowers www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
63. Heat the seal sleeve to 225 F maximum and quickly slide that on tight to the bearing race.
64. Add the new seal, lip side up, and the bearing to the drive cover plate, and lubricate the bearing and seal.
65. Add a light coat of liquid gasket to both the drive cover plate and the follower cover plate.
NVE Blowers | 43www.natvac.com | 800.253.5500
66. Add the paper gasket to both of the cover plates and mount them in place.
67. When bolting them down remember to put in the socket head shoulder bolts first and torque all the screws to a rating of 25 ft/lbs.
68. Now that the blower is completely assembled add the recommended oil into the follower end and into the drive end. Fill the tanks until the oil reaches the top of the site eye.
