Thewaterheaterisdesignedtobeinstalledonaloororaixedplatformwithaccesstowater,

gasandelectricalconnectionsfromtheback.ItisrecommendedthattheGSWH-1belocatedas

near the center of the coach as possible.

DONOTINSTALLINANAREAWHEREONEORBOTHTHEINLETAIRVENTANDFLUE

VENTCANBECOVEREDWHENADOORORACCESSPANELOFTHEVEHICLEISOPENED.

SitePreparation

Toinstalloncarpetedareayoumustinstallametalorwoodpanelunderthewaterheaterthat

extendsatleast3inchesbeyondthewidthanddepthoftheunit.Ifwaterleakagecanresultin

damagetotheadjacentarea,installadrainpanthatcanbedrainedtooutsideofthevehicle,

under the water heater.

Verify that a clearance of 1 inch will remain after installation between the top surface of the

water heater and any combustible material. 0 inch clearance is acceptable for the sides.

Makesurethatthefrontedgeoftheopeningissurroundedbyasolidframetoirmlyanchorthe

waterheater;ifneeded,buildanappropriateframeusing2”X2”elements(Figure1)

TheroughopeningfortheGSWH-1shouldbe12.75”X12.75”withrightanglecorners.The

exteriorwallopeningmustbethesamedimensionswithnoradiuscorners.

WaterHeaterInstallation

Removethewaterheaterfromtheboxbygraspingthemetalsidesofthehousingandlifting

upwarduntilitisfreeofthebox.

Ensure that water and gas connections from

the vehicle are in place for installing the

unit.Allowsuficientlengthandlexibility

in the water and gas lines to reach the

connections while the unit is partially

inserted into the opening.

Partially insert the water heater into the opening and connect both Hot and Cold water lines to

theappropriate½”NPTittings.ConnectionscanbemadeusingPEXswivelnutadaptorswith

NPSstraightthreadsandaconesealorwithastandard½”FPTnut.ThePEXswivelnutsrequire

onlyhandtightening.Whenusingastandard½”FPTnutuseTelontapeand/orPTFEpipepaste

anddonotover-tighten(Figure2,page6).

Connectthegasusinga3/8”LPGasline.Placethegrommetonthelineaheadofthe

compressionnutbeforelaringthetube(Figure2).Useadditionalcaulkingasneededto

complete a permanent seal with the housing around the rubber grommet.

Shortening these wires will prevent the removal of the Control Housing during

servicingand/ortesting.

A:Installationofwaterheaterwithseparatelange

1.Completethe“skin”applicationtothevehicle’souterwall.

2. Position water heater housing into the frame opening with the front edge aligned

evenlytotheexteriorwall(SeeFigure3).

3.Topreventwaterandairleaksapplysuficientcaulkingaroundtheentireframe

openingandtheexterioredgeofthewaterheaterhousing.Useasuitablecaulking

material that will result in a permanent seal between the water heater and the

vehicle’s frame.

4.Pressthesidewallsofthewaterheaterhousingirmlyagainsttheframeto

expelanybubblesandensureagoodbond.

5.Whenreadytoproceed,applyadditionalcaulkingorbutyltapetothebackof

thedoorlangethatwillcontacttheRVsidewallaroundperimeteroftheopening.

6.Insertthedoorlangeintothewaterheaterhousingandpressthelangeirmly

against the sidewall.

7.SecurethelangetothevehicleusingNo.8–¾”latheadscrewsthrougheachhole

alongtheperimeter.Verifythatatightsealexistsbetweenthesidewallandthe

lange.Ifnot,repeatabovesteps.

8.Aligneachholealongtheinsideframeofthelangewiththecorrespondingholesin

thewaterheaterhousingandsecuretotheframeusingNo.8–¾”latheadscrews

using two screws per side.

9.Removeanyexcesscaulkingandcleanallsurfaces.

1.Protectthesidewallwithmaskingtapeorothersuitablemeanstoinsurethat

it is not damaged while installing the water heater.

2.Positionthewaterheatersothatthefrontedgeextendsfromtheopening

approximately2”andinsertthedoorlangeintothehousing.

3.Permanentlyattachthelangetothehousingusingstainlesssteelscrewsor

stainlesssteelrivetswithrecommendedgriprangeof.188”to.129”andhole

sizeof.129”to.133”.

4.Topreventwaterleaksapplyagoodamountofcaulkingorbutyltapeonthe

sidewallaroundperimeteroftheopeningthatwillbecoveredbythelange

and along the front edge of the housing that will contact the mounting frame.

5.Slidethewaterheaterinplaceintotheopeningandpressthedoorlange

against the sidewall.

6.SecurewaterheaterhousingunittothevehicleusingNo.8–¾”lathead

screwsthrougheachholeinthedoorlange(Figure4).Verifythatatightseal

existsbetweenthesidewallandthelange.Ifnot,repeatabovesteps.

D:Functionaltests

1.Verifythepowerswitchisinthe“OFF”position

2.Turnonthewatersupplytotheunit.

3.OpenandthenclosethehotANDcoldwaterfaucetsinthevehicletoillthe

pipeswithwater.Closethefaucetswhenthewaterislowingsmoothlyand

verifythattherearenoleaksattheconnectionsandwithinthewaterheater.

4.Turnonthegassupplyandcheckallgasconnectionsforgasleakswithleak

detection solution.

5.Turnthepowerswitchtothe“ON”position.

6. Open a hot water faucet and verify that the unit lights and supplies warm water

at the faucet.

7. WHILE THE UNIT IS RUNNING,verifythattherearenoleaksatthegasconnectionstothe

control valve and to the burner.

E:DoorInstallation

Aftermountingandsecuringtheunitinthechosenlocation,installthedoormakingsurethat:

1.Thedoormountingpostsonthedoorlangeareproperlyalignedwithcorresponding

holesalongthedoor’sloweredge.Ifneeded,carefullyre-alignthepostswithpliers.

2.Theexhausttubeextendsbeyondthedoor’sfacethroughtheclearancehole

BUTnotbeyondthefaceofthedoor.Besurethattheexhausttubeisseated

properly. See Figure 6

3.Ensurethatthedoorlockoperatessmoothlyandengageseasily.

UnderstandingHowtheGirardTanklessWaterSystemWorks

TheGirardProductsmodelGSWH-1isanew‘induced-draft’,tanklesswaterheaterdesigned

speciicallyforRecreationVehicles(RV).Itsconigurationandsizeareconsistentwiththetank

basedRVwaterheaterscurrentlyinuseandisdesignedforOEM’sandaftermarketusebythe

RVindustry.AmainfeatureoftheGSWH-1isaDualBTUburnerthatautomaticallyadjuststhe

levelofthelame(HighorLow)dependingonthetemperatureoftheinletwater.

Atanklesswaterheaterheatswaterwhileitisbeingusedi.e.,ondemand.Theoutput

temperatureofthewaterdependsonthetemperatureoftheinletwaterANDtheamountofhot

waterthatisdrawn.Iftheinletwatertemperatureisover65ºFthemodelGSWH-1 will generate

waterintherangeof105°Fto120°F(onLowlame)dependingonthewaterlowselectedby

the user.

Tooperate,irstsetthePowerSwitchtotheON position and set the Mode Switch to AUTO,

then FULLY open the HOTWaterFaucetbyturningthefaucetknobcounterclockwise;thewater

will begin to heat up once the water in the piping has been purged. DO NOT TURN ON THE

COLD WATER.ThenDECREASEthelowofthewater(turnthefaucetknobclockwise)untilyou

achievethedesiredtemperature.Thehotwatervalvebehavesverymuchlikeatypicalmixing

valve:itINCREASESthetemperaturewhenthewaterlowisREDUCED.ToDECREASETHE

WATER TEMPERATURE(i.e.,makethewatercooler),increasethelowofthewaterbyturning

thefaucetknobcounterclockwisetherebyincreasingthelow.DO NOT USE COLD WATER TO

ADJUSTTHETEMPERATURE.

InaconventionalinstallationtheGirardTanklessWaterHeaterisconnectedto:

1.TheRV’scoldwatersystemderivingitswaterinputfromapressurized(45psior

greater)sourcesuchasashoreconnectionoranRVwaterpumpconnectedto

thefreshwaterstoragetank.

2.TheRV’sHotwatersystem(i.e.faucetsandshower)

3.TheRV’sLPGassystemcapableofsupplyingitsratedBTUrequirement.

4.TheRV’s12VDCilteredelectricalpowerdistributionpanelutilizinga12Volt,10

amp fused line.

Tobeginoperationsimplysettheswitchtothe‘ON’position(Figure7),settheModeswitch

(Figure5)totheAutoposition,AND open the HOT WATERfaucetyouwanttouse.Theunit

will automatically light and start heating your water. DO NOTusecoldwatertoadjustthe

temperature.

BymanuallysettingtheMODEswitchtoautomatic,themodelGSWH-1automaticallysenses

andadjuststhelamelevel(HighorLow)dependingonthetemperatureoftheinletcoldwater

(thewatercomingintotheGSWH-1).ThelamewillchangefromHightoLowifthetemperature

oftheinletwatergoesabove70°FandwillswitchbacktoHighwhentheinletwatergoes

below65°F.ManuallyswitchingtheModeswitchfromAUTO to LOW overrides the automatic

functionandforcesthelametostayinLOWeveniftheinletwaterislessthan65°F.Thiscan

be desirable when the cold water inlet temperature is very cold and the inlet water pressure is

below1.0gpmwhichcouldresultinlimiting(seeNoticebelow).ThesystemwillremaininLow

until manually switched to Auto.

NOTICE

Youwillnoticethatifyouincreasethelowofhotwater(i.e.,openthefaucetmore)

the temperature will automatically DECREASE since more water is being heated.

If,ontheotherhand,youdecreasethewaterlow(closethefaucet)thetemperature

will INCREASE.DONOTTURNONTHECOLDWATER.Ifyoureducethewaterlow

too much, which will result in HOTTER water, the rising temperature will increase and

triggertheSafetyCutOffor‘limitswitch’(125°F)andtheburnerwillshutoff.Thisis

commonlyreferredtoas“limiting”andisasafetyfeaturedesignedtoprotectagainst

accidental scalding. Whenever the temperature rises to a

comfortable level, INCREASEthewaterlow(openthefaucet)tomaintainthedesired

temperatureandpreventtheburnerfromshuttingoff(limiting).

If a shut off does occur, you will notice a decrease in the water temperature. In this

case do not close the faucet, but rather open it more and the water heater will

relightafterafewseconds;youmaythenre-adjustthetemperaturebyreducingthe

lowappropriately(i.e.,lessthantheprevioussettingtoavoidrepeatedlimiting).

WINTERIZATION

Freezing of the water heater and its plumbing components will result in severe damage not

coveredbywarranty.Forthisreasonitisadvisabletofollowtherecommendation(s)belowif

the unit is to be stored in a freezing environment or for long periods of time. At the start of the

winterseasonorbeforetravelingtoalocationwherefreezingconditionsarelikely,theunitmust

bewinterized.TheverysmallamountofwaterpresentintheheatexchangerDOES NOTrequire

theinstallationofabypasskit.Winterizationcanbeaccomplishedusingoneofthetwocommon

methodsofwinterizationusedforRVwatersystems:

•CompressedAirmethod:Drainallwaterfromthesystemopeningonetapata

time and using compressed air to purge all remaining water.

•Anti-freezemethod: Follow the recommendations of the Recreational Vehicle

manufacturerandillthesystemwithanontoxicanti-freeze.Makesurethatthe

anti-freezelowsfromeachtaptocompletetheprocess.

PRESSURE-TEMPERATURERELIEFVALVEThiswaterheaterisequippedwithatemperatureandpressurereliefvalvethatcomplieswith

thestandardforReliefValvesandAutomaticGasShutoffDevicesforHotWaterSystems,ANSI

Z21.22.

THISVALVEISASAFETYCOMPONENTANDMUSTNOTBEREMOVEDFORANYREASON

OTHERTHANREPLACEMENT.

WHENREPLACINGTHEPRESSURE–TEMPERATURERELIEFVALVE

MAINTENANCE

RoutineMaintenance

WerecommendthattheGSWH-1waterheaterbeinspectedmonthlybytheuserandatleast

once a year by a Girard Products LLC recommended service technician.

Beforeaninspection,makesurethattheLPGasandWatersystemsareturnedon.

Aroutineinspectionmustincludethefollowingitems:

1.Inspecttheintegrityofthesealing(caulkingortape)betweenthesidewallandthedoor

of the water heater and ensure that the unit is solidly mounted to the vehicle.

2.Verifythattheairinletopenings(louvers)arecompletelyopenandclearofanydebris

includingmud,leaves,twigs,insectsetc.Removeallobstructionstoallowfullairlow.

3.Insects,includingmudwaspsandspiders,canbuildnestsintheExhaustTubeOutlet

andExhaustCollectorwhichwillaffecttheperformanceoftheunit.InspecttheFlue

OutletTubeandExhaustCollectortomakesurethattheyareunobstructedandthatthe

screen is clean. If debris or insects are present, clean and vacuum to

removeanyremainingdebris.Theuseofanytypeofaftermarketscreentocoverthe

vent is not permitted and will void the warranty.

4.Openthecoverandverifythatnodebrisorextraneouscombustiblematerialsare

presentanywhere(especiallyintheareaoftheburnerandthegascontrols);

remove any item present and wipe clean the bottom of the housing.

5.Inspecttheinteriorsurfaceofthehousingforanycracksorcorrodedareasthat

couldallowpenetrationofgasesintooroutoftheinteriorofthevehicle.Check

especially around the Hot Water, Cold Water, Gas and electrical connections.

6.Checkthatallwireconnectionsareirmlyinplaceandtherearenosignsofchaingor

cracksontheinsulation.VerifythatthesparkignitioncablebetweentheControlBoard

and the igniter is securely in place and not shorted to any metal component.

7. At least once a year activate the Relief Valve by lifting the lever on top of the

valve. MAKESURETHATTHEWATERHEATERHASNOTBEENONRECENTLYAND

THEWATERFLOWINGFROMTHEHOTWATEROUTLETISCOLD.

8.Turnonthepowertothewaterheaterand

open a hot water faucet to inspect

thelameoftheburner.Thelameshould

be of the normal bluish appearance

thatindicatespropercombustion.Thiscan

be accomplished by observing the

lamesthroughthesightholeandlooking

at the burner under the edge of the

heatexchanger(SeeFigure8).

Troubleshooting

Whenever the user opens a hot water faucet,

thewateractivatesthe“FlowSwitch”,which

providesathermostaticrequesttotheCircuit

BoardforIgnition.UpontherequesttheCircuit

Boardperformsthefollowingtasks:

1.Microprocessorresetandself-check

2.Veriicationthatnolameispresent

3.VeriicationthattheSailSwitchisopen

4.TurnontheBlower

5.Upondetectionofcombustionairlow,

starts the ignition routine by opening

thegasvalveandsupplyingtheirst

sparkingsequence.

Normally the ignition trial is successful and

the user will start receiving warm water at the

faucet.

TheControlBoarddetectstheconditions

that could result in a hazardous situation

and either prevents the Gas ignition to occur

orimmediatelyshutsdownthelameby

interruptingthegaslowtotheburner.The

failuresdetectedbytheControlBoardare:

Failuretolight

Iftheburnerfailstolight,oriflameisnot

detectedduringtheirstignitionattempt,the

gas valve is deenergized and the control goes

throughaninter-purgedelaybeforeignition

isattemptedagain.Thecontrolwillattempt

twoadditionalignitionsequencesbeforegoing

into ‘LOCKOUT’ after which the valve relay

willremainde-energizedandtheblowerwill

turnoffafteraiveminutedelay.(Lockout

Condition)

Recoveryfrom‘lockout’requiresamanual

reset by either resetting the thermostatic

demand(turningoffthewaterlow)orturning

offthepowerforaperiodof5secondsand

then opening the HOTWaterFaucet.

Flamefailure

Iftheestablishedlamesignalislostwhile

the burner is operating, the control will

respondwithin0.8seconds,thegasvalve

isde-energizedandanewinter-purgeand

ignition routine will begin. If the burner does

notlight,thecontrolwillde-energizethe

gasvalveandwillmaketwomoreattempts

to relight the burner. If the burner does not

relight after the three trials the control will

gointoLOCKOUTasnotedabovein“Failure

tolight”.Iflameisre-established,normal

operation resumes.

Combustionairlowproblems

Iftheairlowsignalislost,orthehi-limit

switch(SeeNoticePage12)opensduring

operation, the gas valve is immediately

de-energizedandtheblowerstayson.If

the switch closes again, a normal ignition

sequencewillresume.Ifnot,andifthis

conditionpersistsformorethaniveminutes,

thecontrolwillenterlockoutwiththeblower

off.

Diagnosticsfeature

If the unit stops operating normally, please

checktheLEDindicatorontheuserpanel.If

theLEDisonorblinking,theblinkingpattern

will notify you of the fault detected by the

ControlBoardasfollows:

•SteadyOn-InternalControlFault

•1Flash-AirFault

•2Flashes-FlameDetectionError

•3Flashes–Lockout

•4Intentionally‘NA’–Reservedfor

FutureDiagnostics

•5Flashes-Lowvoltage

throughaBillofSaleorotherappropriaterecord.

2.ReplacementpartswillbeshippedFOBtheshippingpointwithintheContinentalUnitedStates,

AlaskaandCanadatotherecommendedservicecenterperformingsuchrepairs.Allfreight,

shippinganddeliverycostsshallbetheresponsibilityoftheowner.

3. Service calls to customer’s location are not considered part of these charges and are, therefore,

the responsibility of the owner.

4.Beforehavingwarrantyrepairsmade,conirmthattheservicecenterisarecommended

service center for Girard Products, LLC Water Heaters. DONOTPAYTHESERVICECENTERFOR

WARRANTYREPAIRSWITHOUTPRIORAPPROVALFROMGIRARDPRODUCTS,LLC;SUCH

PAYMENTSWILLNOTBEREIMBURSED.

5.Thedefectiveparts(orwaterheater)becomethepropertyofGirardProducts,LLCandmayneed

tobereturnedtoGirardProductsTechnicalSupportDepartment.GirardProductsreservestheright

toexaminetheallegeddefectivepartorwaterheater.Allreturnedpartsand/orproductmustbe

individually tagged with the water heater’s model, serial number, date of installation and detailed

explanationofdefect.

6.Thiswarrantydoesnotcoverthefollowingitemsclassiiedasnormalmaintenance:

• Adjustmentofgaspressure

• Cleaningoradjustmentoflue

• Adjustmentofpressure-temperaturereliefvalve

• Cleaning,replacement,andadjustmentofburneroriice

7.Thiswarrantyappliesonlyiftheunitisinstalledaccordingtotheinstallationinstructionsprovided

and complies with local and state codes.

8.Thewarrantyperiodonreplacementparts(orwaterheater)istheunusedportionoftheoriginal

warrantyperiodorninety(90)days,whicheverisgreater.

9.Thislimitedwarrantydoesnotapplytodamagecausedbyaccident,abuse,misuse(including

damage caused by service performed by anyone who is not a Girard Products LLC recommended

installer),misapplication,alterations,modiications,waterdamageorfreezing.
