I n t r o d u c t i o n Languages are precious; they capture the very essence of a culture.

The exceptional night-sight of owls is akin to the insight that language

offers in understanding a culture.

The Métis culture, a mix of First Nations (mostly the Cree and Ojibwe

peoples) and European (mostly the French and Scots peoples), has

gone through many transformations since it began. This mingling of

cultures resulted in the Michif language that is a unique blend of Cree

(Ne¯hiyawe¯win) and French (Français) with some Saulteaux dialect

of Ojibwe (Nakawe¯mowin; Anishinaabemowin). In its own way, the

Michif language, with its Red River and buffalo-hunting roots, records

the transformations of the Métis culture.

V

Michif was once spoken by thousands of people across the Prairies of

Canada and the Northern US. It is now spoken in pockets of Manitoba,

Saskatchewan, North Dakota, Alberta, Montana, and by other Métis

communities scattered across North America. Michif is highly endan-

gered, as are the unique Métis dialects of other languages traditionally

spoken by Métis people, and could disappear within a generation. At

one time, not only did many Métis people speak Michif, it was the

norm to be multilingual. Some Elders still speak one or more tradition-

al heritage languages in addition to English. Today most of the younger

Métis are monolingual English speakers, but there has been a recent

resurgence in interest in learning Michif and other Métis languages.

Page 8: Owls can see clearly at night

Michif, like all languages, was originally only a spoken language, not a

written one. When Michif speakers began to record the language early

on, they used a number of different ways to represent the sounds of

their language and the spelling they used varied considerably.

Recently, some of those working together to revitalize the language

have realized that the letters q and x do not really represent sounds

heard in Michif, so we will not see these letters in any Michif words

(nor in this book). As well, whole sentences can quite often be ex-

pressed in one word in Michif, whereas in English this requires two or

more. Commands are marked with an exclamation mark as in English.

For pronunciation of the words, please refer to the guide at the back.

“U and “uu” are included here,

there is actually both “o/oo”

one basic vowel sound. Future

Vowels immediately followed by

a ñ are nasalized. This means

air passes both through your

mouth and your nose, not just

your mouth. English does not

have a true distinction between

nasal and non-nasal vowels. At

the same time, you can hear a

slightly nasal vowel in the word

‘bank’ that you do not when you

say ‘back’. Note, however, that

Michif vowels are usually more

strongly nasalized than this.
