x-heightFont sizeThe point size of a digital font is entirely arbitrary.

ProportionsAt body text sizes, legibility is enhanced by wider letter forms, lower contrast and slightly heavierweights, along with proportionately high x-height and generous white space inside the letters. The opti-mal stroke weight is about one fifth of the x-height, or slightly less if the strokes are uniform. At smallsizes, the eyes perceives irregularities more than at large sizes, so text meant for body copy needs to befairly regular.

FamiliarityFamiliar forms are easier to read than unfamiliar. Studies indicate that German black-letter fonts are justas easy to read for people used to them as regular fonts. However, for those not used to them, black-let-ter is virtually illegible. Very distinctive letter forms which draw attention to themselves reduce legibility.

CredibilityIncreasing legibility beyond a certain point reduces credibility.

Legibility

The point size of a digital font is entirely arbi-trary. Originally, the point size was the size of thebody of the letter, being the lead block in whichthe letter was set. This has no counterpart in digitalprint. Some fonts, such as Zapfino, go outside thepoint size, to compensate optically for their other-wise disproportionately small appearance. Vari-ants of Garamond may have quite different opticalheights despite having the same point size. Fontswith a high x-height appear larger and are more

legible than fonts with a small x-height. This grid is ‘set tight’, which means that the ‘offi-

cial’ font height is also the leading (using the digi-tal meaning of this term).

Normally, text is set with 20% to 30% extraspace. A font which is optically smaller for thesame point size naturally takes up less space, butis also harder to read. Therefore, it is not possibleto rely on point size to define legibility.
