The Rio Grande Valley IS a powerful economic engine.

The Valley labor force grew from 314,000 to 462,000 between 1995 and2010 and the unemployment rate decreased from 18.4% to 11.6%.

There are 165 Ports of Entry in the US. Since NAFTA was adopted in1994, most of the ports have enjoyed substantial growth in bi-nationaltrade between NAFTA partners.

Value you will see that in 2013 the RGV Ports of Entry handled over$38.2 billion in cross border trade placing it 6th nationally. HidalgoPOE’s handled $26.3 billion (7th ) and Brownsville POE’s $11.99 Billion.

Inter Oceanic Highway Corridor• The importing of Mexican produce for

processing in the US is expected to

increase materially over the next decade as

the opening of a new transportation

corridor between Mazatlan – Durango-

Monterrey-Reynosa. The new Inter-

Oceanic Highway will shorten time by 6-

12 hours.

• A “tsunami” of agricultural products is

anticipated as a result of the opening of

this highway. Much of the Agricultural

exports to the US from Mexico now cross

at Nogales. It is expected that more than

50% of that trade will cross at the Pharr

bridge in the coming years.

• The highway will pass under and over the

Sierra Madre Occidental through 63 new

tunnels and 11 new bridges.19PREPARED BY NAI RIO GRANDE VALLEY

The Third Coast• The McAllen/Reynosa Binational metro is

strategically located in the center of North

America's population center. In 2009, Southern

Business & Development recognized this

Binational metro as a "tweener market," meaning

companies can enjoy the benefits of operating

between the United States and Mexico.

• This strategic location allows companies to

enjoy the advantages of accessing two growing,

educated labor forces, two tax systems and two

governments. Companies know that in order to

provide customized products in 24-48 hours

while still meeting the market demands,

operations must be close to customers, suppliers

and an available workforce.

• The port at Mazatlan, now closer because of the

opening of Inter-oceanic Highway From

Mazatlan To Pharr/Reynosa is a key element

of the infrastructure that can make the RGV, and

McAllen Reynosa in particularly, a great

alternative to West coast ports of entry.
