Altered Book Project:

Overview

Goal: Transform a discarded/recycled

book into a creative work of art that accurately analyzes literary

components of the novel you read in your Literature Circle. You will

utilize a variety of media techniques to make your “Altered Book” interesting and eye-catching.

The main character in Catching Fire is Katniss Everdeen and she is selfless. Throughout the book, Katniss has shown many examples of being selfless. For example, when she got chosen to be in the Hunger Games, she decided that she was going to use all of her power to make Peeta the winner. She chose to sacrifice herself to save Peeta. She even stated, “You have to promise me that you will do whatever it takes to get him out, he needs to be the winner.” Another example of Katniss’ selflessness was when Gale was being whipped in the town square and Katniss threw herself in front of him. She thinks of others before herself. If someone is in trouble or hurt, she will do whatever it takes to help them. It is clear that these examples show Katniss is a selfless person throughout the book.

Ender Wiggin, the main character in the novel Ender’s Game, has many distinct personalities, but the one personality that stands out the most to me is his confidence. Ender shows his confidence through his thoughts, actions, and words. One example of when Ender is very confident is when he has only been at battle school for a few days and sees a game that he has never seen before and claims that he can beat the older boys at the game. Although Ender did win, he couldn’t be sure he was going to win and must have had to have lots of confidence to say that to someone who could easily hurt him. Another example of when Ender had lots of confidence was when Ender decided to fight Bonzo, who was planning to kill him, instead of running away from him. This was very courageous of Ender and must have taken lots of confidence because Bonzo was older, bigger, stronger, and had taken self defense classes. Ender also had lots of confidence when he stood up to Bonzo. Bonzo told him,, “...you’ll obey me. If you try and control my free play, I can get you iced.” Ender said, “It probably wasn’t true.” This took a lot of confidence because Ender defended his free time and event threatened Bonzo, who he takes order from, even when he didn’t know if the threat was true or not. Ender shows confidence all throughout this novel, whether it is in his thoughts, actions, or words.

This quote demonstrates the theme that “Family can help you through hard times.” When Salva thought of his family, he found the strength he needed to keep going, despite the major challenges he was facing. It was his family that helped him make it through.

85 “The bag sprang a leak. The leak had to be patched. The patch sprang a leak. The crew patched the patch. Then the bag sprang another leak.”

This quote demonstrates the theme that “Life is filled with challenges, but perseverance can get you through.” The bag repeatedly springing leaks showed the never-ending challenges of life, but repeatedly repairing the leak and trying again shows that perseverance is what gets you through life.
