Los Alamos Postdoctoral AssociationLAPA is an association, which was organized by postdocs forpostdocs, to foster a sense of community through eventsorganized to promote social and career networking amongstpostdoctoral colleagues at LANL.

Postdoc AppointmentsAll sponsored postdoc candidates are reviewed and selected bythe Laboratory’s Postdoc Committee. Initial appointments aretwo years, renewable for a third. Most candidates will beoffered a Postdoc Research Associate appointment. Inaddition, each year approximately 30 Postdoc Fellowappointments, including as many as six distinguished postdocfellows, are awarded.Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow candidates must displayextraordinary ability in scientific research and show clear anddefinite promise of becoming outstanding leaders in theresearch they pursue. These appointments are three years.
Types of AppointmentsPostdoctoral Research Associates conduct research as part ofongoing LANL science and engineering programs.Director's Postdoctoral Fellows collaborate with LANLscientists and engineers on staff initiated research. Candidatesare selected by the strengths of their academic and researchexcellence, as well as proposed research project. Sponsoredcandidates' packages are reviewed by the PostdoctoralCommittee quarterly.Agnew National Security Postdoctoral Fellows conductresearch aligned with the Laboratory's National Securitymissions which includes Environmental Programs, StockpileManufacturing, Weapons Physics, Weapons Engineering, andThreat Reduction Programs. US citizenship is required.Sponsored candidates' packages are reviewed by thePostdoctoral Committee annually, typically at the Augustquarterly meeting.
Distinguished Postdoctoral AppointmentsCandidates must display extraordinary ability in scientificresearch and show clear and definite promise of becomingoutstanding leaders in the research they pursue.Up to two appointments are awarded from eachdistinguished category annually. Appointments are for threeyears. Sponsored candidates are reviewed by thePostdoctoral Committee at an annual meeting held inJanuary.
J Robert Oppenheimer(JRO) Postdoctoral Fellow - Namedafter the Laboratory's first Director, this fellowship providesthe opportunity for recipients to collaborate with LANLscientists and engineers on staff initiated research. Open toall nationalities.Richard P Feynman (RPF) Postdoctoral Fellow in Theoryand Computing - Named after the famed theoretical physicistand winner of the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics, thisfellowship provides the opportunity for recipients tocollaborate with LANL scientists and engineers regardingstaff initiated research in the areas of theory and computing.Restricted to US citizens.Frederick Reines (FR) Postdoctoral Fellowship inExperimental Sciences - Named after the former LANLresearcher who won the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics, thisfellowship provides the opportunity for recipients tocollaborate with LANL scientists and engineers regardingstaff initiated research in experimental sciences. Thisfellowship will be awarded to outstanding experimentalists,regardless of their field of study. Restricted to US citizens.
Postdoctoral Partnership AppointmentsIntelligence Community (IC) Postdoctoral Fellow - Incoordination with the Intelligence Community and theDepartment of Energy, collaborate with LANL scientists andengineers regarding staff initiated research in areas that havethe basis for future technological developments important tothe Intelligence Community.

Salary and BenefitsCurrent salary guidelines start at $66,100 and are based onyears since completion of PhD. Starting salary forDistinguished Postdocs is $99,500.A generous and comprehensive benefits package is includedfor all postdoc appointments.
