i am delighted that i have seen so much of my dream for the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), the new Library of Alexandria, actually implemented. i have devoted many

yearsofmylifetobringittothisstage.Today,IcansaywithpridethattheBAhasstarted to take its place in the international arena, and that it is indeed taking important steps to be recognized as the heir to its famous ancient namesake, for by its many activities, the spirit of the old library is revived with the tools of the new century.

Since its inauguration in 2002, the BA has increased its collections, expanded its activities, embarked upon new projects and left no realm unexplored. i am extremely grateful for the generous donation of 500,000 books from the Bibliothèque nationale deFrance(BnF);onethatmadetheBAoneofthelargestFrancophonelibrariesintheworld, and the main depository of French books in the Arab world and the African Continent.

Today, wenotonlyaspiretomaintaintheBA’slevelofexcellenceinthequalityandquantityof itsactivities, itspublicationsanditsdigitaloutputs;wealsowant itto expand to reach other parts of egypt. Last year, we focused on the importance of outreach.Todayandtomorrowwelookforthisoutreachtocontinuetoexpandandgobeyond the city of Alexandria. we expect to see the new BA developments in Cairo, from the 6thofOctobertotheSennariHouse.WelookforwardtotheBA’sworkonthe Family Park, as well as the development of Science City, the new Science Museum of egypt. we hope to see the completion of the Antoniadis restoration and start of constructionoftheBorgEl-ArabfacilitiesincludingtheTVstudioandtheFMstation.Thechallengewillbetomaintainthestandardsofqualitythatwehaveestablishedinthe past eight years during this important period of expansion. it will be a test of how far our young management team has matured, but we have risen to past challenges, and i look forward to our being able to meet this one, too.

Annual Report July 2009-June 2010 9

As we enter our eighth year of existence, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) can look back at a major record of achievement and accomplishment: millions

of visitors, thousands of cultural events, increasing collections of books and digital resources, rapidly growing art collections, and an expanding outreach that includes everything from mass media to book fairs, and from science clubs to environmental youth groups. in pursuing all these activities, we have always attempted to maintain ahighlevelofqualityratherthanbeingconcernedonlywithquantity.The700orsoeventswehaveundertakenthisyearareidentifiedinthisAnnualReport’scompanionvolume The BA in Action 2009/2010.

This ongoing stream of events has created a presence for the BA nationally, regionallyandinternationally.TheabilityoftheBAtoservethepublicinEgypthasbeen largely limited to those who have come in contact with our staff and researchers, orthosebenefittingindirectlyfromouroutputs(books, films, digitalmaterials, etc.)inaddition to those who visited our facilities in Alexandria. At the request of our Board ofTrustees, wearenowembarkingonanewphaseofouroperations, whereweshallbe expanding our presence as well as our outreach.

in the past year, we have put in place the foundations to support this expansion. in Alexandria, the BA storage and support facilities complex in Borg el-Arab is completed andoperational.OurcomplexinShallalathasbeenrefurbished.TherestorationoftheAntoniadisVillaisfinallyreachingcompletion.TheprojectsatAbisland,andthelargecampusatBorgEl-Arabareunderdevelopment.Theyshouldhelpregroupthestaffand activities that are currently housed in some 15 rented apartments.

This ambitious program of expansion, of both activities and facilities, raisesimportant challenges for the maintenance of cohesion and the upholding of quality. However, under the governance of our distinguished Board of Trustees and theguidance of our Advisory Board, our youthful and gender-balanced management team will, i hope, rise to the challenge in exemplary fashion. we introduce both our Board ofTrusteesandAdvisoryBoard, aswellasthemembersofthemanagementteaminanother companion volume to this Annual report, Who We Are.

Thus, thethemeforthisyear’sAnnualReport,ExpansionwithQuality, isasmucha statement of challenges to come as a promise of our commitment to rise to them. Thisyear’sAnnualReport spellsouthowwehavepreparedourselves for thatnextstage of our Institution’s existence, and next yearwe shall report on the unfoldingvisionasitstartsbeingimplemented.Theworkcontinues, themanifestationsmultiply, but the guiding vision remains the same: to promote rationality, pluralism, dialogue, learning and understanding. we will ensure that whether it is at the main building of theLibrary, oratanyofitsaffiliatedstructures, theBAshallremainaplacewhereallseekers of knowledge and lovers of culture will feel at home.

WearepoisedtolaunchthesecondstageoftheBA’sdevelopment.ItiswhentheBAshallexpand from its current level of presence in Alexandria and with one center (CultNat) in Cairo, to aninstitutionactivewithinmultiplelocationsinAlexandriaandCairoandpossiblybeyond.Thechallenge is going to be how to organize this expansion without loss of quality.

we at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina shall remain faithful to our mission, as we will always believeinwhatAristotlestated:“Qualityisnotanact, itisahabit”andoldhabitsdiehard.

Stage 2what are we aiming for at the milestone birthday on 16 October 2012? we are determined to

have achieved a number of objectives that are in keeping with our mission statement and general goals.Theobjectiveswehopetohavesuccessfullyachievedbythattimeare:

TheBAcontinuestobeanimportantandattractiveculturalinstitutiontovisit;andourvisitorsshould be some 1.5 million persons or more, of whom at least 250,000 persons should be non-egyptian.

Our library services and collections will be at the peak of performance locally, regionally and internationally. we should have some 1.5 million items in our collections.

Our Francophone collection will be fully deployed, and will be matched by an intensive francophone cultural activity program.

Our cutting-edge analytical work shall be expanded with new ventures and new projects: from each of the eight research institutes we expect to reach some milestones in ongoing work and somestartingupofnewactivities.Thespecificmilestonesarerelatedtoeachinstitute’sworkprogram. InICT,ourwork indigital librarieswillbecontinued, including themajorprojectsrepresentedbytheWDL,theEOLandUNL.Inmanuscripts, wewillhaveapproachedourgoalto have organized copies of 100,000 Arabic manuscripts available for consultation by specialists, and we will have launched our new analytic work program. Our work on documentation of heritage will be expanded with new coverage in both Alexandria and Cairo and beyond, as well as with new tools and techniques … and so on.

Our cultural outreach in Art shall be all over egypt, and we shall maintain the commitment to quality and openness to the artists of the world, and to open doors to the young artists, in addition to nurturing the artistic talents of children and youth.

Our outreach to youth will be enhanced by reaching close to 300 schools in Alexandria with science clubs, and with an operational science center in the Suzanne Mubarak Family Park in east Cairo… and much more.
