Hotel Laguna F U N D R A I S E R

The Capistrano and Irvine Committees are combining their fundraising efforts once again to plan a lovely luncheon, followed by a music program, at the Hotel Laguna. The event is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, January 20th. The music program will feature the Claremont Trio, a group of three young women, two of whom are sisters. They play piano, violin and cello and feature a variety of music. They are a well-known group who have given many concerts, including Carnegie Hall. Critics give them rave reviews. In addition, we are hoping to have a composer of music for fi lm give us a talk. This was a successful fundraiser for us last year, and we’re excited about the prospect of a similar event this coming year.

Fifty Years is something to celebrate! by Mary Lou Skowronski, Event Chairman

Balboa Peninsula neighbors and Balboa Philharmonic Committee, past and present Members were celebrated this past summer for their participation in sustaining 50 years of volunteerism in support of the Philharmonic So-ciety youth music programs in Orange County Schools.

Richard and Laura Lee Browne hosted this nostal-gic Gala Benefi t Party at their bayfront Peninsula Point home. Music by the Usual Suspects band as well as singer Patricia Bullock with the Twilight Moon Jazz Trio took invited guests down memory lane as they were reminded of the past 50 years; old photos, past event newspaper articles and a red Corvette convertible added to the mood.

Event chairman Mary Lou Skowronski said: “the highlight of the evening was when the Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol arrived and received a standing ovation as they performed a water display salute to the Balboa Philharmonic Committees’ 50 years.”

All 23 Committees of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County provided their support, truly making it a volunteer celebration and successful fundraising event.

CongratulationsPat Peyton from the Cameo Committee was awarded a plaque

honoring her 50 years of service to PSOC. The award was presented at the Annual Meeting of PSOC on March 27th.

When summer is over we usually think it’s time to settle back into the old routines. But, for some Philharmon-ic Committee mem-bers, summer brought no respite. The La Casa Committee started work-ing on our new “Casa California” Design House a year ago and the steering commit-tee has been quite busy since spring. Like-wise, the Huntington Harbour Committee began in May to put together their Cruise of Lights and has been rousing its troops all summer. This issue has articles about both of these upcoming events and how we can all support them. In addition, to give you another little teaser, a new fundraiser is in the works for county-wide participation. Meetings were held this summer for a “new and improved” fashion show that will take place in the spring of 2010. Lastly, see the information about the Chair-ity event be-ing sponsored by Santa Ana-Tustin Com-mittee. This is a unique concept that the Executive Committee thinks will fascinate you all! Lots of activity has been going on! It’s going to be an exciting year!

Our traditional September Kick-off is in the plans so mark your calendar. Unfor-tunately, space is limited so get your RSVP and check to Karen Ridout right away. You will also be pleased to read about the “3-fer” offer that the Society’s President and Artis-tic Director, Dean Corey, is offering to all Committee members.

We are fortunate to have such hard-work-ing and forward-looking women in The Committees. The talent is incredible and so multi-faceted. Just when we are supposed to be having a downturn of the economy, we see an upturn of ideas and willingness to volunteer from our selfl ess members. I feel especially privileged to serve as your Presi-dent this year. I want to get to know all of you better so when you see me at the Youth Concerts or other events, please come and introduce yourself. If you have any issues you’d like to talk about, don’t hesitate to call me or send an email.

COUNT THE HOURS!by Marie Fries

99,882 hours were re-ported by the women and men of The Committees. Congratulations and well done. That is 2,075 more hours than last year. We have accomplished this in a year that does not include House of Design hours. This is a wonderful response showing your dedication to the children of your communities. I want to thank each Committee chair-man and the Hours Chairman for the reporting of hours right up to the June 30 deadline. Please remember how important these hours are for our grant funding. Report these hours to your Hours Chairman: attendance at any PSOC meeting, travel time, ush-ering, food preparation, telephoning, fi ling reports and time volunteered by your spouse and friends and anything else you can think of.
