Neil Clark, son of Charles Clark & Ann MacLeod, was born 6th June 1863 at Ruaig, Tiree. He

left home at the age of 14 and served in various ships trading to all parts of the world. He went

to New Zealand in one of the early sailing ships and settled in Port Chalmers, later moving to

Wellington where he resided for more than 40 years. He died on 7th December 1944, survived

by one son and five daughters, and is buried in Karori Cemetery, Wellington, Area 02,

Block A, Row 11, Plot 025. His wife Agnes (née Morris), who died in 1922 aged 53, and their

son Neil Donald, who died in 1904 aged 3, are buried in the same grave.

46. Inglewood Cemetery, Taranaki, New Zealand Submitted by Marie Cox <[email protected]>

Duncan Campbell McDonald, son of Peter McDonald, shoemaker, and Juliann McPhail, was

born 6th September 1819 at Scarinish, Tiree. Some time before 1869 he emigrated to

Melbourne, Australia, where he married Sarah Jane Clews. They had 5 children. The family

emigrated to New Zealand about 1877/78. Two of Duncan's Tiree-born brothers, Hugh

(Ewen) b.1825 and Archibald b.1833, joined him in New Zealand. Hugh was killed while

felling bush at Inglewood, Taranaki, in 1882, and Duncan was killed in the same manner and

at the same place in 1888. They are buried together in Inglewood Cemetery. The inscripton on

their headstone reads: " Erected by Archibald McDonald in memory of his brothers Ewen

McDonald who died 23 September 1882 aged 60 years also Duncan Campbell McDonald who

died 12 December 1888 aged 52 years".

Hector McKinnon, son of Archibald McKinnon & Margaret McDougall, was born at Vaul,

Tiree, in 1801. He married Margaret McKinnon (49.1) in 1835. In the 1840s they and their

children left for the Isle of Barra, and from there they moved to the mainland parish of Petty in

search of shelter and employment. The impoverished family was assisted by the Highland &

Island Emigration Society to emigrate to Australia and sailed on the Bloomer, arriving in

Sydney on 26 July 1853. Hector died on 28 March 1864 at Minmi, New South Wales, and was

buried in the Presbyterian Burial Ground there.

49.1 Margaret McKinnon, daughter of Donald McKinnon & Marion McDonald, was born at Hough,

Tiree, in 1811. She married Hector McKinnon (48) in 1835. She emigrated with Hector and

their children to Australia in 1853. She died on 14 January 1901 at Waratah (Newcastle) and

was buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Sandgate.

49.2 John McFadyen, son of Allen McFadyen (McPhaiden), mariner, & Emelia (Amelia) Stewart,

was born at Scarinish, Tiree, in 1833. He emigrated to Australia in the 1850s and settled in

Newcastle, New South Wales, where he worked as a miner and colliery checkweighman. He

was secretary of the Miners' Union. He married Margaret McKinnon (49.3) at Pit Town,

Newcastle, in 1860. He died on 11 September 1900 at Lambton (Newcastle) and was buried at

Sandgate Cemetery (Grave No.39, Section 1, SE).

49.3 Margaret McKinnon, daughter of Hector McKinnon (48) & Margaret McKinnon (49.1) was

born at Balephuil, Tiree, in 1838. She emigrated with her parents and siblings to Australia in

1853. She married John McFadyen (49.2) at Pit Town, Newcastle, in 1860. She died on

Tiree, in 1836. She emigrated with her parents and siblings to Australia in 1853. She married

(1) Alexander Kerr at Raymond Terrace in 1857 (he died in 1865), and (2) David Hutchison

Watt at Lambton (Newcastle) in 1867 (he died in 1909). Sarah died on 26 May 1921 at

Lambton and was buried at Sandgate Cemetery.

49.5 John McKinnon, son of Hector McKinnon (48) & Margaret McKinnon (49.1), and brother of

Margaret McKinnon (49.3) and Sarah McKinnon (49.4), was born in Tiree in 1843 (no

baptismal record). He emigrated with his parents and siblings to Australia in 1853. He was a

blacksmith by trade. He married Rose Neville at Lambton (Newcastle) in 1879. He died on

8 December 1922 at Lambton and was buried at Sandgate Cemetery.

Catherine Cameron, daughter of Hector Cameron & Flora MacDonald, was born at Balevullin,

Tiree, in 1845. She married Malcolm McArthur in Glasgow in 1873 and in 1879 they

emigrated to South Africa where Malcolm worked as a ganger on the Cape Government

Railways. Malcolm died in 1914 and Flora went to Durban where she lived with a daughter and

son-in-law. Flora died in Durban in 1916 and was buried at Stamford Hill Cemetery.

Inscription: In loving memory of our dear mother, Catherine McArthur, died 13 June 1916, aged

71 years.

52.1 Julia Ann MacNiven, daughter of Colin Malcolm MacNiven & Flora Campbell, was born at

Grianal, Tiree, in 1804. The family emigrated in their own vessel to Canada in 1822, with Dr

John Noble on board. Julia Ann married Dr Noble in 1823. She was a noted midwife and her

extensive journeys to deliver babies are remembered in Cape Breton to this day by the name of

a ferry boat, Caolis Silis – Strait of Julia, named after her. She died on 1 June 1843. Her grave

marker, still standing, is the oldest remaining extant in the MacLean Church Cemetery.

52.2 Colin MacNiven, son of James MacNiven & Julia Campbell, was born c.1765. He married

Flora Campbell of Mull, Tiree, Cape Breton and Ontario. He died by drowning in 1824 at Cape

Breton Island, Nova Scotia.

married Daniel Richmond. She died on 2 July 1898 in Ontario, Canada, and was buried in the

Weston Cemetery, Umatilla County, Oregon, USA. Inscription: RICHMOND. Born in Tiree,

Argyll, Scotland. Mother Flora Richmond born 1828 died July 2, 1898. Aunt Ann McArthur

born 1832 died Sep. 10, 1894.

55.2 Ann McArthur, daughter of Alexander McArthur & Christina McLean, was born at Kenovay,

Tiree, on 26 May 1833. She died on 10 September 1894 and was buried in the Weston

Cemetery, Umatilla County, Oregon, USA. Inscription: RICHMOND. Born in Tiree, Argyll,

Scotland. Mother Flora Richmond born 1828 died July 2, 1898. Aunt Ann McArthur born

1832 died Sep. 10, 1894.

56.1 Ann McDonald Clark McKinnon, daughter of Donald McDonald & Eliza Lamont, was born

at Cornaigmore, Tiree, on 20 September 1834. She immigrated to Canada with her family when

she was young and married Malcolm Clark (b.Tiree 1825) in Brock Township, Ontario, about

1854. They had 5 children, 3 of whom died young. Malcolm Clark died in 1862 and Ann

married Hugh McKinnon (56.2) on 29 June 1866. They had 8 children born 1867-1882. Ann

died on 25 June 1909 at Minto, Manitoba. Her inscription on the McKinnon family stone in

Minto Cemetery reads: In Memory of Ann McDonald, Wife of Hugh McKinnon, Born Sept. 20,

1834, Died June 25, 1909. Dearest Mother Thou Have Left Us, Here Thy Loss We Deeply

Feel, But ‘Tis God has Bereft Us, He Can All Our Sorrows Heal. Image

56.2 Hugh McKinnon, son of Fingon McKinnon & Christina McLean, was born at Salum, Tiree, on

27 November 1841. In 1851 he immigrated to Canada, where he married Ann Clark née

McDonald, a Tiree-born widow, in 1866. They had 8 children born 1867-1882. Hugh died at

Minto, Manitoba, on 17 August 1920. His inscription on the McKinnon family stone in the

Minto Cemetery reads: HUGH McKINNON 1842-1920. On the same face of the stone are

inscriptions for his Canadian-born step-daughter Elizabeth Ann Clark 1862-1917 and son

Malcom McKinnon 1867-1941. Image

The Argyle Cemetery is located on the north-west quarter of 31-73-23, which was the

homestead of Mrs Mary MacLean, mother of ‘Big John’ and Neil MacLean who se lives are

described on the Emigrant Stories page of www.tireegenealogy.com. Bessie Keating in The

MacLeans from Tiree. published in the Shoal Lake history book, wrote: “Grandma (Mary

MacLean) died in 1885 and is buried in Argyle cemetery on an acre of Neil’s land. When we

were young that cemetery was known to us as the MacLean cemetery . It is the resting place of

many former Aryllshire people: the MacLeans, the MacKinnons, MacDonalds & MacPhails.”

The MacLean family stone in the cemetery bears the following three inscriptions:

57.1 Mary MacDonald (1798-1875). Inscription reads: In Loving Memory of Mary MacDonald,

Beloved wife of Hector MacLean, Native of Tyree, Argyleshire, Scotland, died Nov 25 1875,

Aged 77 Years and 8 Months. It gives her year of death as 1875, not 1885 as noted above by

57.3 Neil MacLean (1852-1907). On a third face of the stone is the inscription: Neil Maclean, 1852-

The fourth face of the stone records a Canadian-born daughter of Neil & Mary MacLean.

57.4 Allan MacLean, known as Captain Allan, was a son of Hector MacLean & Mary (MacDonald)

MacLean (57.1) of Baugh, Tiree, and a brother of John & Neil MacLean (57.2, 57.3). He

immigrated to Canada with his second wife, Catherine (Kate) MacLean (57.5) and family in

57.5 Catherine (Kate) MacLean was born in Tiree on 31 Oct 1851 and married Allan MacLean in

Tiree in 1875 after the death of his first wife. The family immigrated to Canada in 1879 and she

died there in childbirth on 11 Oct 1882. The inscription on the gravestone reads: In Memory of

Catherine, Beloved Wife of Allan McLean. Born in Tyree, Scotland, October 31, 1851. Died

Oct 11, 1882. Jesus has called the Mother home, Her flesh lies mouldering in the tomb, God

grant her offspring may be blessed, And meet her in eternal rest. Image.

57.6 Marion McLean Lamont, daughter of Hector McLean & Mary Macdonald (57.1), and sister of

John, Neil & Allan MacLean (57.2, 57.3, 57.4), married Neil Lamont about 1860 and later

emigrated with her husband and five children from Kirkapol, Tiree, to Canada. Inscription

reads: In Loving Memory of Marion McLean, wife of Neil Lamont, Died December 20, 1902,

Aged 71 Years. Image.

57.7 Neil Lamont married Marion McLean (57.6) and in 1879 with her and their five children

immigrated to Canada and settled on section 36-18-24 about seven miles NW of Shoal Lake,

Manitoba. Inscription reads: Neil Lamont, Died Oct.14, 1914, Aged 95 Years. Image.

57.8 Hector Lamont, son of Marion McLean (57.6) & Neil Lamont (57.7) was born at Kirkapol,

Tiree, in 1872, immigrated to Canada with his parents and siblings in 1879, and died in 1881.

Inscription reads: In Loving Memory of Hector, Beloved Son of Neil and Marion Lamont, Born

July 21, 1872, at Kirkapoll, Tiree, Scotland, Died Oct. 17, 1881 at Shoal Lake, Man. Image.

57.9 Christina McKinnon, daughter of Donald McKinnon & Mary McKinnon, was born 6 May

1839 at Baugh, Tiree, immigrated to Canada with her parents and siblings in 1879, and died

aged 67 at Shoal Lake, Manitoba. Inscription reads: Christena McKinnon, Beloved Wife of

Dugald McLean, Born Baugh Tiree, Argyle Scotland, May 6 1839, Died Shoal Lake, February

57.10 Donald McKinnon, son of Donald McKinnon & Mary McKinnon and elder brother of

Christina McKinnon (57.9), born 6 June 1837 at Baugh, Tiree, immigrated to Canada with his

parents and siblings in 1879, and died aged 70 in 1908. Inscription reads: In Loving Memory of

57.11 John MacPhail 1851-1927. His birth/baptism is not recorded in the Tiree Old Parish Register

but the gravestone and family records indicate that he was born in Tiree. Manitoba Vital

Statistics record that he was born on 8 April 1851 and died on 19 March 1927. The gravestone

also commemorates his second wife Catherine (1865-1952) who was born in Iona. Inscription

reads: John MacPhail, 1851-1927. Born at Tiree. Peace, Perfect Peace. Image.

57.12 Robert McDonald c.1835-1904. His birth/baptism is not recorded in the Tiree Old Parish

Register but the gravestone records that he was born in Tiree. The 1901 Census of Canada

records that he was aged 65, born in Scotland, and immigrated to Canada in 1851. Inscription

reads: In Loving Memory of Robert McDonald, Died June 20, 1904, Aged 69 Years. Born in

Tyrie, Scotland. Dearest father Thou Has Left Us. And Thy Loss We Deeply Feel. But Tis
