SUCCeSS was th ordr of th day astwo mmbrs of Handbridg Shotokan
Karat Club (HSKC) xclld at thir
rcnt black blt xaminations.
Dave Craggs, a computer consultant from
Westminster Park, was therst to put his
months of preparation to the test. Dave
gave an excellent
performance demonstrating speed, power
and ghting spirit and was rewarded with
the words ‘Dave Craggs- 1st dan!’ indicatingthat Dave had nally achieved the much
coveted black belt, the gold standard
amongst karateka.
Dave joined the club only last year, coming
back to karate after a 30 year
break. Dave returned after reading about
a fellow karateka from the club who got his
black belt two years ago, also after a 30
year gap. Dave said “I had worked hard
over the year to prepare myself for thegrading. Sensei Mike O’Connor is a 6th
Dan with over 40 years of experience and
the club also has regular visits from
some of the top masters
from the KUGB, all of
which ensured I was
well prepared
for the event.
I have kept
myself t
over the
years
playing
squash
and
cycling,
but a 55 I
was getting
more and
more injuries
mostly from
playing squash,
karate has been fantastic for improvingmy exibility and strength and since I have
started, I have had no more injuries, even
playing squash. Karate is great for all ages,
we have members from 7 to 70! I am now
looking forward to working towards my 2nd
dan”.
In the advanced black belt examinations,
success came to Laura Pelleymounter a
research scientist who moved to the North
West from the Midlands some ve monthsago. Laura joined HSKC after meeting Dave
on one of the free KUGB black and brown
belt courses. Laura, who has been a 1st
dan black belt for six years, was looking
for a club who could prepare her for her
2nd dan examination and the HSKC easily
fullled that role. Laura gave a good strong
polished performance easily securing her
coveted 2nd dan.
Laura said: “The classes at Handbridgeare at a very high level, focusing on
technical excellence and ghting
applications of karate techniques. Mike
has great in depth knowledge
and his training sessions
make karate come alive
for karateka of all
levels.”

You can’t get too much winter in the winter - Robert Frost
RECIPE
Pan Seared Cod with Shrimp
and Cabbage & BaconServes 4
Recipe by Leigh Myers, Executive Chef at Nelson (Northwest) [email protected]
Method
1. Cut bacon into 1 cm strips, fry until crisp in a little olive oil. Add diced shallots.
2. Shred the cabbage, put in a pan with the butter and a dash of water. Cover with a lidand cook for 2-3 minutes until soft. Then add to bacon and shallots.
3. Place a frying pan onto the stove and heat, add some olive oil
4. Place the cod skin side down and turn down the heat – this should take 6-7 minutes tocook
5. Whilst the sh is cooking, place the shallots into a pan with the vinegar and reduce by half. Then add the cream, and slowly incorporate the unsalted butter. Finally, add theshrimps and parsley, and heat gently.
6. Next, place the cabbage and bacon onto a plate and turn out the sh on top of thecabbage and bacon, add the lemon juice, and then spoon the shrimps around the edge.
Chef’s TipWhen pan-frying the cod, if it manages to stick to the bottom of the pan do not panic; tilt the
pan slightly on its side and the steam from the sh will help to release it.
Ingredients:
1 large llet of cod1 lemon100g fresh shrimpsChopped parsley 250g of unsalted butter
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar6 diced shallots50ml of whipping cream
Ingredients forCabbage & Bacon
1 Savoy cabbage4 rashers streaky bacon20g unsalted butter2 diced shallots

I’m single by choice. Not my choice – Orny Adams
w.p c.c.
IF you have been inspired by England’s Ashes success
then why not have a look at Westminster Park Cricket
Club.
The club was active for many years but faded away
when they joined up with the old Shell team in
Ellesmere Port.
Last year the club was reformed by local amateur
cricketers, to offer the local communities who use
the Park an opportunity to try out and take part in
a team which welcomes anyone and everyone.
They have a broad spectrum of players from
different backgrounds and diversities. Ability is
not important only the will to try. The team will be
competing in their second season of midweek t20
cricket, as well as playing a few friendly games.
They are welcoming new people at their nets
session, held at the King’s School sports hall everyWednesday evening at 8pm. Team kit is available.
Anyone interested can visit our facebook page,

CHESTER CROQUET CLUB
Sue’s cong, ake the ost o t!AFTER another long and chilly winter, now’s the time to look forward to warmer days and
longer evenings. Why not try your hand at croquet as an interesting and enjoyable outdoor
leisure activity for the summer months? Perhaps you have played garden croquet with
family or friends and would like to learn more about the game. Perhaps you have just retired
and would like to try something new. Or perhaps you would like to take part in a sport which
involves challenge and skill and which can be played on equal terms by men and women of
all ages but which does not require the strength and stamina of more strenuous sports.
Once again Chester Croquet Club is welcoming new members and visitors of all standards
from absolute beginners to more experienced players. The club meets in the pleasant
surroundings of Westminster Park and coaching and games are provided to suit all abilities.
This year the club is offering two free taster sessions for golf croquet at 2.00 pm onSunday afternoons on 8th and 15th May. These sessions are ideal for people who have
not played croquet before and who would like to give it a try and learn more about the
game. The club is also offering a more comprehensive introductory course for association
croquet at 6.30pm on Wednesday evenings for six weeks from 4th May to 8th June. This
course is aimed at people who may have played some croquet before, perhaps golf croquet
or garden croquet, and who would like to develop their skills and tactics for association
croquet.
All equipment is provided by the club and the only requirement is that players must wear
at-soled shoes.
Contact Mollie McBride on 01244 675108 or Pat Clare on 0151 336 2606.
