WELCOME TO THE MARCH NEWSLETTER.Life has been a little less hectic since Christmas and I have had time to work on plans for our pantomime which this year was “Jack and the Beanstalk”.
I did attend a concert at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds which was to raise funds for the St Edmundsbury Mayor’s own charities and I have also attended the meeting with Network Rail to discuss the future of the Gypsy Lane crossing.
One other issue that the Town Council has been involved in is the future of our Internet Café. I say “our” Internet Café because I see it as an excellent facility for the whole community, but in particular of course, for our youngsters. The
most recent meeting we held in early February was most encouraging. The Café has received some grant money and volunteers have offered furniture and work on the building and this will ensure its immediate future. The Town Council is committed to ensuring the secure future of the Café and, judging from the large attendance at the public meeting in December, the community is behind it as well.
There will be a quiz on March 4th and a Fashion Show on April 1st, both in aid of my charities. I would love to see you all there.

ASHBURNHAM OVER 60’S CLUB
New members always welcome! We meet at the Needham Market Community centre, 2:30-4PM on Thursdays. There is a community bus to pick people up and take them home again for all our meetings and outings (small charge for this).January 7th was our AGM. With time running short, the officers were not elected at this meeting. We finished with a cup of tea and biscuits.14th January, Irene Martin entertained us with a talk about “The Good Old Days”.
21st January, Peter Banham came to talk about the origins of old sayings, for exampleA “square meal” comes from sailors eating off of square platters.Peter covered lots of other popular sayings.Peter’s wife bought along things that she knits and makes for the hospice shop, which were for sale. We looked at them after Peter’s talk while we were having tea.28th January was our ‘bring and buy’ sale. We also elected our officers at this meeting.Submitted by Kate – Tel. 01449 720628.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTEWe thoroughly enjoyed the talk and slides on the Northern Lights and the Eclipse by Frank and Jo Lea in January - it got the year off to a good start. At the time of writing we are still looking forward to our talk on Woodcarving and to our birthday party which is on 29th February -always a good evening. In March we have the Federation Annual Meeting at Trinity Park, which a few of our members will be attending, and then on March 14th our talk is entitled Try your hand at Painting and Drawing - so if you would like to have a go please come and join us for the evening. Our other main task in March is catering at the Art Show so hopefully we will see you there. We meet at the Community Centre every 2nd Monday in the month at 7.30pm and visitors are always welcome. Letters: THANKYOU TO AN UNKNOWN PERSON…I would like to say a very big THANKYOU to the person who kindly dropped off 3 large bags of bird seed at the Community Centre but left no note as to whom it was from. They have obviously seen my bird feeders hanging outside the Community Centre and this gift will certainly keep them well topped up! Very many thanks.
Carol, Community Centre Caretaker
THANKYOU FROM ZILPHA GOODINGI am writing to express my sincere gratitude to all my friends and family for their kind wishes, practical help and consideration during my recent stay in hospital.Whilst it might be some time before I’m able to get out and about, I remain totally humbled to think that I remain in your thoughts.Yours Faithfully Zilpha Gooding

This play centres on the day the American Air Force pulled into town and changed the course of history, both locally and nationally. It was a time when Yanks, as the English called them, had only ever been seen on the big screen, so when they turned up in smart uniforms, with silver tongues and money to match, the effect was electric. The GIs arrived to find villages without electricity, women without husbands, and bars with warm beer. The culture clash would produce sparks.
Eastern Angles presents a fascinating and moving new theatre production telling the wartime story of the arrival of thousands of American GIs from the 8th US Army Air Force. Nylons, Hershey bars and jitterbugging to Swing Bands in the local village hall all feature but there was another side to this shared history – a tale of segregation and of rural communities turned upside down. Kids being forced to grow up before their time, friendships forged and then blown apart and outsiders learning to live amongst the locals.
Discover this important story of how the Eastern region was physically and socially affected by the arrival of our friends from across the pond.

CAN YOU HELP US TO HELP OUR CHILDREN?As many of you may know the children arrive with only the clothes they are wearing. We are busy collecting “nearly new” items which we give to the children at a clothing party the day after arrival. They take clothes not only for themselves but also for siblings at home. If you have any clothing suitable for ages 6 to 13 that you would like to donate we would be extremely grateful. Donations can be left at the Charity Shop or collected by calling the numbers as given above. We also give each child a selection of basic medical items to take home with them, any of which are either not available to them, of inferior quality to our products or just not affordable. If you could donate any of the items listed below it would be a tremendous help. No donation is too small and everything is really

Care and Support GroupsLONELINESS AND COMPANIONSHIPLoneliness is a massive issue for elderly people in the UK. As people grow older they will inevitably lose more of their friends, neighbours and even their spouse or partner. This reduces the social interaction that they might have. Also the elderly can have limited contact with family members due to them living away or having busy lives. All of these issues can lead to feelings of loneliness.
Loneliness can then lead to a cycle of behaviour. As the elderly person feels more isolated they may become more withdrawn and spend even more time on their own which can lead to anxiety. This anxiety can then lead to more prolonged spells of time on their own and the vicious cycle has begun.
Loneliness may not seem like a serious problem but the effects of the loneliness are. It can lead to serious depression and anxiety and can also lead to physical health problems. Prolonged loneliness can seriously affect a persons well being. This is why companionship is so important and can help to keep loneliness and its effects at bay.
There are lots of ways we can help the elderly in our community helping them with shopping or taking meals round for them. However it’s also important to spend the time with our elderly to help combat the loneliness and isolation they may be feeling. Stopping for a cup of tea and a chat, playing a game of cards, doing a jigsaw, going out for a walk, watching a movie together – all these activities allow an elderly person to enjoy themselves.
Companionship can also be offered as a service by care companies. This isn’t as a luxury but as vital aspect of someone’s care to help keep those feelings of loneliness and isolation at bay.
We all need to do everything we can to help the elderly in our community to feel more content and confident, and perhaps inspire them to do more things, and reduce any anxiety about the world outside their front door.

ST ELIZABETH HOSPICEDuring 2015 the amount of trimmed stamps sent to the Hospice from Needham Market was 68 lbs, slightly down from 2014. Again, this has been achieved with a great deal of time and help from everyone who continues to support the cause in various ways. This includes the stamp trimmers, Peter, Molly and Bryan, Celia who still brings all the T. & M. envelopes and everyone else who continue to save their stamps and make sure they eventually reach me. I have received many little packages through my letterbox since Christmas and I really appreciate that most people have remembered to just tear the corner off the envelope and leave enough paper to trim them nicely. It makes it so
much easier to handle them all so very many thanks for that.I have received a letter from the Hospice and quote: “Thank you so much to you and everyone at Needham Market for your donation of used stamps. Every donation really does make a big difference and a vital contribution to our work. I am pleased to tell you that in 2015 we received £4,463 from the total sale of used stamps so we are very grateful for your kind support. We rely on the generosity of people like you to help us to raise funds so that we can continue to develop our services now and in the future.”
I hope you will agree that our combined efforts are worthwhile and continue your valued support. Many, many thanks.Barbara Butcher, 11 Quinton Road, Needham Market.

Needham Market Town Council News
Town Councillor Resignation and Subsequent VacancyIt was with regret the Town Council received the resignation of Sam Rowland. Sam was in her second term as a Town Councillor and will be missed by her Town Council colleagues. The Council thanks her sincerely for her service as a Town Councillor.
The appropriate notices regarding filling the vacancy will be displayed on the Town Council’s current main notice board at Barretts Lane Corner
and on the Town Councils’ website. If you would like to know about the process for becoming a Town Councillor or what being a Town Councillor entails, please contact the Town Council Office (contact and website details are shown on page 2 of this Newsletter).
Consultation on the Proposed Changes to the Suffolk Fire and Rescue ServiceAt the Town Council’s 20th January meeting, Suffolk’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer delivered a presentation on proposed changes to the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service which are set out in its Integrated Risk Management Plan 2015-18 The Town Council was interested to learn about the detail of the proposed changes across Suffolk and, in particular, on the Needham Market Fire Station. In the event there is no fundamental change proposed for our town’s Fire Station although arrangements for deployment of the fire engine
should see it called into more regular action as a result of the proposed changes affecting fire stations in Ipswich. One issue causing concern is recruitment and retention of ‘on-call’ staff, however Councillors were informed two new staff have been recently recruited to the Needham Market Fire Station and are undergoing training. The Town Council has offered to assist the Fire and Rescue Service in future recruitment activity, through pubilicity.
Local Policing in SuffolkThe Town Council has ben keeping a close eye on the review process being undertaken by Suffolk Police. The review document setting out the changes which will take place with effect from 1st April 2016 can be accessed via the Suffolk Constabulary website. The document is titled ‘Constables County – All Change for Suffolk’ The aim of achieving a streamlined workforce will see a substantial reduction in PCSO numbers and Needham Market will lose their direct presence in the town. The Town Council has enjoyed a long and very beneficial relationship with our local PCSO’s and it is hoped that at least some continuity may be retained if those PCSO’s working from their current base in Needham Market are transferred, not too far way, possibly working out of Stowmarket.
A Notice to Members of Needham Market Institute and ClubThe Town Council is writing to
as many members as possible on behalf of the Trustees of the Institute regarding its formal closure and to give opportunity to arrange collection of any belongings they may have left in the Institute building, as follows:
This letter is to formally notify you that the Needham Market Institute and Club has been closed and your membership thereof has ceased.
Unfortunately, after nearly one hundred and ten years providing service in the Town it could no longer pay its way and had to stop operating.
The trustees have been working with the Town Council to try and find an alternative use for the building, but none has been found.
The building and contents will now be sold. Under the terms of the Act under which the Institute was established, Members have no claim on these proceeds, which can only be used to provide similar activities.
If you have left any personal property in the Institute can you please let us know so that it can be returned to you.

NEEDHAM MARKET RUSHMERE ST ANDREW
Neighbourhood Watch ‘Swish Up’ for Charity!I’ve mentioned many times the various scams that are going round, and in nearly all cases it’s the elderly that are being targeted. I’ve recently been informed of one such scam - some people living in Suffolk have received telephone calls from a caller who purports to be from their GP surgery and is asking for an appointment to visit them to discuss their mobility needs. During the appointment the person is persuaded to buy mobility aids which are either unnecessary or inappropriate and always expensive.
If you receive such a call please do not give any personal details, and hang up. Nobody to my knowledge living in Needham Market has been approached but if you are worried and do receive a call do hang up, wait 20 minutes, check your phone has a dialling tone and then contact your surgery directly to see if it was a genuine call.
While I am on the subject of elderly residents, if you have a neighbour that lives alone, please make yourself known to them, and if the weather turns wintery make sure they are not alone all the time, check they are warm, have plenty of food in, that their paths are clear of snow and ice, and if they use the internet make sure they know where to look for information and support.
Our Good Neighbour Scheme is now up and running. Look out for the advert in this Newsletter
for more information.
Finally, just a word about our next Neighbourhood Watch meeting – it is on Monday March 14th at 7.30pm in the Green Room at the Community Centre. We had planned to have a speaker from Trading Standards to bring us up to date on the various scams doing the rounds but unfortunately they are unable to attend. They have however sent me some short videos that I hope to show on the night. So if you want to learn more about scams and how to avoid them please feel free to pay us a visit.
See you there.

Swishing is the new alternative to clothes shopping. It can save you money and help our environment. Here’s how it works: you get ruthless with your wardrobe and pick out up to 5 items of clothing and unlimited amount of accessories (shoes, handbags, scarves, belts, jewellery, hats etc.). Everything must be clean and of a quality you’d be proud to hand on. Bring your items along before the swishing party, get a voucher for each item and then exchange each voucher for another item. It’s a fun night out with friends – and everyone’s a winner:• You get clothes that are new
to you without trudging to the shops (and you create space in your wardrobe!).
• Great night out with drinks and canapés.
• Our environment wins
because it’s all local, so we’re not all driving to the shops.
• Our charities win because they get the money raised from admission tickets. This year we are supporting Red Cross Refugee Appeal and Breast Cancer Care.
Get ready to swish on April 15th – book your ticket nowWe are grateful to Diana and Steve for lending us Creeting House (creetinghouse.com) for this years Party on April 15th at 7.30pm, then the swishing starts at 8pm. Cat’s ProtectionBury St Edmunds and Stowmarket Cats ProtectionThis month we are looking for a home for Polly and Pickle a brother and sister aged approximately 18 weeks. They have come into our care as semi feral kittens so are nervous of any new situations. We are looking for a quiet and knowledgeable home where their new owners are able to spend time with them to continue to improve their
confidence and social ability. They can live with another cat or a quiet dog but we feel an adult family would be best for them. They are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
If you would like to know more about Polly and Pickle or any of the cats in our care please ring Marina on 01449674584. More information can found on our website www.cats.org.uk/bury-st-edmunds and our Facebook page. If your cat has not been neutered and your circumstances mean that you
need financial help towards the cost please ring Margaret on 01284 851055 and leave a message. Your call will be returned as soon as possible. We have already booked a 2016 Spring Fayre 7th May
11am to 3pm in Wattisfield Village Hall. Tombola prizes and items for sale are always appreciated. Please email [email protected] or ring 01449720003 to arrange collection.

Community NewsNEEDHAM MARKET INTERNET CAFÉHello, firstly a massive thank you to all of you that turned up in December to the meeting at “The Café”. We were immensely proud that so many of you turned up to support us not forgetting the 25 plus children who came and sat through the meeting, their behaviour was exceptional.
We are sorry to report that we did not succeed in securing any of the £10,000 that we applied for due to “lack of funds and too many applicants”. Anyway onwards and upwards - Wendy Marchant and Mike Norris gave us a generous amount of their locality grant of which we are very grateful. A local builder has been on the roof and has confirmed there is no danger of collapse in the foreseeable future.
We were nominated for a Community Achievement Award and we won! As you are aware
we have stopped opening on a Friday to help with costs and will hope to re-open in the near future. We are still open to “Lets do it” on alternative Fridays.
We have decided to take on board your suggestion at the meeting about membership but have decided this would be difficult to police. If you would like to donate a nominal fee of £10 per half term, this would be greatly appreciated. If you require our bank details, please get in touch.
Lastly, we will be organising a re-launch day after the frontage of the Café , together with other bits and bobs are tidied up and looking nice. If you need to get in touch our phone number is (01449) 722660 opening times only (see advert in newsletter). Our email is [email protected] or see NMIC Facebook page.
Thank you again, Sam, Cath and Ros

MONTHLY PRODUCE STALLS to start on Saturday April 2nd outside Church EVERYBODY WELCOME AT ALL OUR SERVICES
We have all been saying it doesn’t seem that long since Christmas but by the time you read this we will be well into the Season of Lent. Our Lent Lunches which are held on the Saturdays during Lent, still have several to go to in March, including 5th, 12th and 19th so please do go along and support these friendly lunches run from 12noon to 1.30pm in the ARK. On Saturday 5th March there will be a coffee morning in Church in aid of the Roof repair fund so why not pop in for a piece of cake and a drink, there may even be some produce on sale as well. Our fund raising for the Roof repair fund is bringing in several grants from various organisations but we still are hoping for a grant of thousands from somewhere that means we can move forward and start to get quotes for the cost of the repairs required. If you wish to make a donation to this can be done by using Btmydonate go to www.bt.com/mydonate use the “Donate to charity” and search for Parish Church of St John the Baptist, Needham Market, if you pay tax you can click on the gift aid box and that will mean we get an additional 25% from the government.Another way you can make donations if by using our dividend number in the Co-op. Just advise the cashier that this is what you wish to do before they swipe your members card. Once the card
is swiped the Cashier will see a charity option on the screen which they choose and then put in the Church number which is 633096 this will then be claimed annually by the Church. There are a few events coming up to raise funds for the roof which you might like to make a note of:-Saturday 9th April 7.30pm in the ARK there is a Moody & Sankey evening of joyful music. CHRISTCHURCHWhat a difference a year makes! The building work at the front of Christchurch started in March 2015, and I imagine some of us find it difficult to recall the old frontage, particularly inside the building.
But it is surprising just how quickly we get used to new things – even though sometimes we are not entirely sure at first that we like them! It’s not long before that new haircut, or those new glasses become familiar and ‘normal’.
One thing that changes is the date for Easter. Currently the date is determined by a formula involving the full moon that follows the northern spring equinox. It’s complicated and at times, such as this year, we end up with Easter in March. The earliest it can be is the 22nd of March. However, there are discussions under way between various church leaders and it is possible that at some
time in the future Easter will be celebrated on a set Sunday in April which will be helpful for everyone, particularly schools!
The long weekend over Easter marks a time when things changed and indeed do still change. Many tourist attractions open for the first time at Easter and they will be hoping that spring sunshine is the order of the day. It is the first Bank Holiday of the year and an opportunity for families to spend time together. For churches and Christians it is a weekend of great contrasts as we recall Jesus dying on the cross on Good Friday, and then on Easter Day the empty tomb and the news that he had risen from the dead.
The weekend is a time of sombre sadness, followed by a day of joy and celebration. Never mind what a difference a year makes - more like what a difference three days make!

Needham Market Raft Race 2016Well, it’s now February and we have had the AGM to determine this year’s date and theme. This year’s event will take place on Sunday 12th June with the theme being ‘Movie Madness’.
This year we have had to say goodbye to two Committee members who have been with us from the very beginning, Jean Pittaway and Dawn Winder - hopefully they will be come back to us again when they are able. Dan Last has re-joined us and we have been joined by Terence Carter. So ……. plans are under way, calls are being made and entry forms are being collected.
As a result of last year’s Raft Race we have been able to make the following donations: Incendia Scouts £200, First Responders £150, St John’s Church Roof Fund £100, Food Bank £100, Saturday Club (Based in Stowmarket) £100.
We have had some great times over the past 14 years and we don’t expect this year to be any different, so put the date in your diary, get a team together, have a fundraising stall or just come along and watch the frolics. Be sure to get there early to get your seat as it’s sure to get busy.
So, on behalf of the Raft Race Committee, Julie Kett, Tony Fitch, Graham Last, Robin Kett, Lynda Terry, Dan Last, Terence Carter and myself Debbie Cadman, see you on the 12th June for some more fun and games on the lake.
Debbie Cadman, Chairman, Raft Race Committee

The second annual Golden Mile raised over £500 which was donated by local running club Stowmarket Striders to hospice fundraisers ‘Trust Maria’.
The Golden Mile is a one mile race that sees runners take to the streets of Stowmarket in celebration of Roger Bannisters first four minute mile. ‘It was really good to see our local community come together; children, families, social runners and faster runners of all ages’ comments Race Director, Tim Larke, ‘it gives all those involved a huge amount of pleasure.’ The race has been enormously popular, and has attracted runners from 3 to 84 years old. Trust Maria is a local charity set up by Harvey McSloy in memory of his mother Maria, who once ran with Stowmarket Striders. They raise valuable funds to purchase essential equipment
for local hospices that’s not yet available to them on the NHS. ‘We are currently raising money to fund the specialist training of new nurses for St Nicholas Hospice’ says Harvey, ‘there is a current shortage and this money will go a long way to helping them get the extra carers they desperately need.’ The third Golden Mile race will take place on Saturday 10th September 2016 ending at the recreation ground, just as the Stowmarket Beach Party festivities kick off. Running over six sessions a
week, including an active junior group, Stowmarket Striders Running Club now has over 350 members and offers a varied training programme that teaches technique and form, and features sessions specifically designed to build strength and stamina. For more details, visit our Website at: www.stowmarketstriders.org.uk

Mid Suffolk Brass was formed in August 2014. Since then, we have been honoured by the presence of Andrew Bannister who is a top musician from Brighouse and Rastrick Band, one of the country’s championship bands. Andrew conducted a music workshop in the morning with our band members and then played some amazing solo pieces during our concert in the evening.
During the last 17 months, Mid Suffolk Brass has performed at the above concert, two Christmas concerts, played in support of our Mayor Barry Salmon at Old Newton Bowls Club, Gig in the Yard at Fox Yard, Stowmarket and the Meadow Centre, Stowmarket. We also appeared at the Mayors event at the Museum of East Anglian Life in between many other carolling events.
Some of these events have enabled us to raise much needed funds to purchase ties for our musicians and banners to hang on the music stands, helping us to emphasise our identity.
We have many events planned for 2016 including joining
another band to make it a massed bands concert and an invite to play in Germany.
One of our supporters this year is the Stowmarket Town Mayor, Barry Salmon. Barry is about to host a Charity Chinese Buffet at The Chinese Chequers, Stowmarket on Tues 8th March 7pm for 7.30pm. Tickets are £20 and available from Stowmarket Town Council Offices, Milton Road South, Stowmarket.
Mid Suffolk Brass would like to thank all our supporters, especially the Councillors, Local Councils and businesses, big and small, for all their support this year. We would also like to thank our band members for all their hard work during the last year and we are looking forward to a busy 2016.
If anyone is interested in joining us, even if you haven’t picked up an instrument for many years, come along and join our friendly team, we practice at St Peters Church Hall, Stowmarket every Monday evening at 7.45pm. Alternatively contact Mel Stammers on 01449 774651.
