THE HACKATHONOn Friday 1 May 2015, Outware Mobile held a health-themed hackathon.

80 Outwarians participated. 17 multi-disciplinary, self-formed teams created

working, usable software in just 8 hours.

Each team competed by addressing one of three Challenges presented to them

by our partners in the Health sector.

WHY HACK?Hackathons are a great way to generate ideas, test new technologies, learn new

skills, get creative, collaborate and have fun! All while creating working,

usable software in a short space of time that solves a given problem.

Giving our team the time to do all of the above is one of the ways we invest in

research, innovation and developing new approaches that lead our industry.

The results of a hackathon help us do our work better, and help our partners

and clients to address new opportunities and solve real world problems.

WHY HEALTH?Our vision is to make a difference through creating mobile experiences that

are intuitive, effective and engaging. The purpose of our work is to remove

barriers, save time and give people access to relevant information when and

where it’s needed.

Rapid developments in mobile technologies have shone a spotlight on the

great opportunities to make a difference in health. By partnering with

organisations that share our vision, we can ensure that the work we do starts

to addresses real issues that the Health sector is facing today.

PARTNER CHALLENGESWe were incredibly fortunate to have great industry partners on board, who

provided us with important, real world health challenges to address:

1. VicHealth – To build young people’s resilience using digital technologies

2. HISA & Dragon Claw – To provide people with rheumatoid disease the

ability to monitor and manage their own care arrangements and to

quickly share relevant information with clinicians

3. nib Foundation & DSR – To improve access to suitable sport and

recreation programs and facilities for people with a disability

AWARDSThere were six prizes on offer. Every team created a working, proof-of-concept

prototype to demonstrate their idea. The winners were:

1. 3+hings – VicHealth Challenge Winner

2. The Flare Diary – HISA & Dragon Claw Challenge Winner

3. Swipe for Sport – nib Foundation & DSR Challenge Winner

4. Schmooze – Most Innovative

5. Choice-O-Matic – Best Execution

6. Uplift – Popular Choice

CHALLENGE #1VicHealthBuild young people’s resilience using digital technologies

One in four young Victorians experience mental health difficulties – affecting

their relationships, negatively impacting their studies, and disrupting their ability

to work. Building resilience helps them to cope and bounce back from adversity.

It is not inherent but develops over time through the interaction between the

person and their social environment.

practice of reflecting on what you’re grateful for in

order to increases overall happiness, combat

depression, and increase overall life satisfaction.

CHALLENGE #2 HISA & Dragon ClawProvide people with rheumatoid disease the ability to monitor and

manage their own care arrangements and to quickly share relevant

information with clinicians

Rheumatoid disease affects 3.5% of the population. Sufferers have to deal with

painful attacks, secondary diseases, major fatigue and depression. People with

rheumatoid disease and their carers need to accurately exchange information

with clinicians, allied health and associated health care workers.

THE FLARE DIARYChallenge #2 WinnerAn Android app that allows users to monitor flare

pains. Users can measure severity, symptoms and

location by audio or touch.

CHALLENGE #3 nib Foundation & DSRImprove access to suitable sport and recreation programs and

facilities for people with a disability in Victoria

People with a disability face higher rates of physical inactivity and social isolation

compared to people without a disability, due to a lack of access to suitable

programs and facilities.

SWIPE FOR SPORTChallenge #3 WinnerA 'Tinder' like Android app for crowdsourcing

sports and recreational facilities and program

information. It does this by engaging all sports

enthusiasts, making it as easy and fun as possible

and rewarding people with “fitcred”.

MOST INNOVATIVEWINNER

SCHMOOZEMost Innovative WinnerSchmooze is an iOS app that engages users in a

conversation using artificial intelligence to lighten the

mood. It simulates a friend to talk to, and helps users

work through their problems and emotions.

BEST EXECUTIONWINNER
