2014 was another very successful year for staff with

the team going from strength to strength in both

technical skills and facilitation skills. The staffing

team has also positively grown in culture and has

expanded with extremely experienced individuals

joining us from Sweden, Phil ippines, England,

Scotland, South Africa, Ireland, Bulgaria, Slovakia

and USA. OBHK are very proud of the unique

staffing team that consistently runs high impact

developmental courses for the people of HK and

China.

When not working hard, individual staff members

push their own personal level of adventure. These

included an expedition on Mt. Denali; 2 members

of staff participating in an 18 day NOLS Alaska

Mountaineering Course, and, 3 members of staff

cycling around Taiwan.

OBHK continued its positive relationship with

Project Trust, an Educat iona l Char it y which

specialises in sending school leavers overseas for 12

months volunteering from the UK. The volunteers

work with a l l depar tments ga in ing va luable

experiences. They fully submerge themselves in the

culture and the ethos of OBHK.

The Adventure Race was held

on the 9th March (Sun) and chaired

by Mr Richard Winter. This raises

through various challenges. With

the best ever record of 125 teams

On the 12th April (Sat), OBHK and

the Listing Committee of the Hong

The Private Recreational Lease (PRL) of the Tai Mong Tsai Base has been granted from the Hong Kong SAR Government until 2027.

The Wong Wan Chau Base is currently preparing for a renovation plan. This plan will double the capacity of the Wong Wan Chau operational area and usage of the facilities will be able to meet the needs of Journey Based programmes.

Two new sets of equipment cages were established in the Ah Kung Wan Training Centre, exclusively for OB Pro programmes. This new arrangement will improve the professional image and quality of service to OB Pro courses.

Such works at the above Wong Wan Chau Base and Ah Kung Wan Training Centre would not be possible without the continued support of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for which Outward Bound® Hong Kong extends enormous gratitude for to this given day.

In 2014, Outward Bound® Hong Kong continuously developed the Sea Journey courses with more sea kayak equipment and facilities purchased accordingly. A new emergency response craft, the Tornado (a 5.8m RIB with 90hp outboard engine), was put in service for the purpose of faster deployment and evacuation in rougher sea conditions, compared to our previous fleet of small vessels.

‘Spirit of Outward Bound Hong Kong’ ‘Spirit of Outward Bound Hong Kong’ (from here henceforth known as ‘Spirit’), is only one of a few remaining “legendary” Challenge 67 yachts in the world.

‘Spirit’ took part in the first 1992-93 and subsequent 1996-97 BT Global Challenge; arguably the most difficult round-the-world yacht race to date spanning over 10 months each to complete and clocking close to 30,000 nautical miles each time. ‘Spirit’ was brought into service at OBHK in June 2004.

An incredibly busy yet successful 2014 saw 180 participants come on-board ‘Spirit’ over a collective total of 200 days out on the water. Upgrades to the running rigging has boosted a tremendous increase in safety of the participants and the performance of the ship itself.

To date, ‘Spirit’ is still the largest training yacht in Hong Kong and the only vessel to engage in ‘sail training’ within and out of our local waters.

Boasting a capability to house 16 persons (inclusive of the 4 professional crew) on-board during any course, participants are immersed constantly in a confined yet unfamiliar, challenging and spontaneous environment. Participants are constantly tasked with on-board duties to ensure the safe operational of the yacht 24 hours a day as without their involvement it would not be possible to manifest the magical experience of the ultimate ownership they eventually achieve towards to end of a course.

Early 2015 has seen major course developments in running the first pilot programme of 12 days in length, tying cultural awareness and sailing together to produce important transference of leadership, delegation, time-management and organisational skills to adolescents in their final years of high school.

Our continued thanks go to ‘The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust’ for their continued support with our 18-day Second Chance Programmes.

Secondary School and Holy Carpenter Secondary

School has been taking place on 8 day Outward

Bound leadership programmes.

Classic Achievers The 18 day ‘Classic Achievers’ courses for senior

school students has continued to grow, with five

groups being conducted in 2014. These courses are

for students in their final years of schooling who

are looking for further direction and leadership

development for their coming transitions into

adulthood. Candidates for these courses go through

an extensive application screening process including

gaining third party referrals and attending full

selection days. The Lee Hysan Foundation and the

Chan Tseng Hsi Foundation are funding one group

each to attend per annum.

OBHK Highlights for 2014Outward Bound International Programme ReviewIn January 2015 OBHK hosted the biennial OBI

Programme Review. This was the f irst time in

OBHK’s history that there were no recommendations

generated from the review and is a commendable

indication of the current high standards.

Programme Evaluation The Lee Hysan Foundation continued their support

for the second year of the Programme Evaluation

Project. This was an innovative two year pilot

scheme that evaluated the effectiveness of Outward

Bound programmes v ia pre and post course

evaluations. Data from the two year pilot has been

benchmarked by external educational consultants

to outdoor education industry standards. It shows

all courses are above industry standard levels in

outdoor education and longer courses generate

higher results. This work is now embedded in OBHK

courses.

The Outward Bound® International website is www.outward-bound.org which covers staff resources, news

and updates, as well as listing all OB centres and their locations and includes an electronic copy of the

Outward Bound® International Journal.

There are OB schools in 33 locations globally and all OB schools are members of Outward Bound®

International which is served by an Executive Director Mr. Iain Peter [email protected].

The Outward Bound® schools undergo programme reviews every 2 years which covers safety, governance,

operations, impact, and educational output.

OBI conducted a symposium in Germany and invited 2 senior staff members from each OB school together

with the executive director of each school to examine strengths and identify priorities in moving OB forward

globally.
