But in reality, any one of four schools could be posing with the championship banner at the end of Saturday afternoon. Based on the marks for the top eight places in each event, the Seawolves are seeded for 144½ points. Close behind are SPU with 135½ and Simon Fraser with 133. Very much in the mix is Central Washington with 121½. Then, it’s Western Washington with 94. On the men’s side, things are a little closer than they have been throughout the season, but Anchorage is still the team to beat. The Seawolves are seeded for 136½ points. Behind UAA are four teams in triple digits: Western Washington at 115, Concordia at 108, Western Oregon at 106½, and Northwest Nazarene at 102. Seattle Pacific is seeded for 19 points, within striking distance of Saint Martin’s (25½). DIFFERENT STATE, BUT SAME WET WEATHER Rain and less-than-ideal conditions have been hallmarks of the 2017 season. So why should this weekend be any different? It won’t be. The Monmouth forecast calls for showers with possible thunderstorms on Friday, as highs will reach only into the mid-50s, but with a real feel of about 50 because of breezy conditions. Saturday will be more of the same, with showers at times and highs edging into the upper 50s. It’ll definitely be cool in the morning, coming off overnight temperatures in the mid 40s.

FOUR CONTENDERS, BUT WHO’S FAVORED?Once the entries were finalized on Tuesday, Alaska Anchorage has emerged as a slight

favorite to win the women’s team title. But in reality, any one of four schools could be posing with the championship banner at the end of Saturday afternoon.Based on the marks for the top eight places in each event, the Seawolves are seeded for 144½ points. MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPSCan he make it two in a row? That’s what Peyton Harris will have in mind when he arrives at the long jump pit on Friday. The SPU junior won it by the most minimum of margins last year – a quarter of an inch (one centimeter on the metric ruler) ahead of Western Washington’s Kevin Yates, with a then-personal best leap of 23 feet, 5 ½ inches / 7.15 meters.Harris has gone a bit farther than that this spring, recording a mark of 23-7½ / 7.20 meters at the Beach Invitational on April 15 in Long Beach, Calif. But that’s still not quite as far as Western Oregon freshman Alani Troutman, who comes as the top seed at 23-10¾ / 7.28 meters. Yates is back, as well, seeded No. 4 at 23-4 / 7.11 meters. In addition to the long jump, Harris is the No. 5 seed in the 110-meter hurdles with his PR time of 15.09 seconds from the JD Shotwell Invitational in Tacoma on April 1. The one to beat in that race is Alaska Anchorage senior Travis Turner at 14.80. Harris is part of a trio that has times of 15.02, 15.03 and 15.09.

Seeded to score in the 800 meters is sophomore Jesse Phan. He has the seventh-fastest entry time of 1:54.48. That event is likely to be dominated by Western Oregon, with David Ribich, AJ Holmberg, and Michael Chin ranked 1-2-3.Thanks to a speedy performance at last Saturday’s Ken Shannon Invitational, Seattle Pacific is seeded

No. 5 in the 4x400 relay. The contingent of freshman Lazarus Scarbrough, Phan, Harris, and senior Justin Ramsey clocked 3:23.12.The Falcons also will have a 4x100 team. With only eight relays being accepted for the meet, SPU started the week ranked No. 9 on the GNAC list at 44.04 with the foursome of freshman Shayne Carpenter, Ramsey, freshman David Choi, and Harris. But the fourth-ranked Saint Martin’s team did not enter, thereby moving everyone up and opening the last spot for Seattle Pacific.Alaska Anchorage remains the favorite for the team title, with five No. 1 seeds in the 20 events. Western Oregon has four No. 1’s.

SCOUTING REPORT

WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPSThe projected point totals aren’t the only close aspects of the meet. Seattle Pacific, Anchorage, and Central Washington all are slotted for 25 places among the top 8, and Simon Fraser is slotted for 21. UAA and Simon each have five No. 1 seeds, the Falcons have two, and Central has one.SPU’s No 1’s belong to senior Kyra Brannan in the long jump and junior Mary Charleson in the 5,000 meters – and the bonus is that the Falcons are actually seeded 1-2 in boith events.

Brannan (photo left) comes in with a long jump mark of 19 feet, 7 inches at the Bryan Clay Invite on April 14. Closest to her is sophomore teammate Geneva Lehnert at 18-10½. Both will have to keep an eye on Western Washington senior Jasmine McMullin, who comes in at 18-8¼. If Brannan wins, it will give her an indoor-outdoor sweep for the year.

In addition, Brannan is the No. 3 seed in the 200-meter dash, No. 5 in the 100 meters, and is on both SPU relays.Charleson and senior Sarah Macdonald are 1-2 in the 5K. Charleson is way out in front with her national 12th-ranked time of 16:41.59 at the Bryan Clay. Macdonald comes in with her NCAA provisional mark of 17:17.21.This has the potential to be a huge event for SPU. Freshman Alyssa Foote is seeded No. 6 at 17:25.78. Also entered is freshman Kate Lilly. She did not do a 5K during the regular season, so is unseeded, but she is more than capable of getting into that top group and scoring some crucial team points.Charleson is the No. 2 seed in the 1,500 at 4:29.53, a time that is No. 20 on the national list. The only one ahead of her for GNAC is Simon Fraser junior Julia Howley at 4:25.45. Lilly is the No. 5 seed for that one. Junior Chynna Phan (4:39.99) and senior Hannah Calvert (4:40.08) are at Nos. 9 and 10, and well within range of a top-8 scoring spot. (That time is 4:38.36.)In fact, Phan (photo right), has a chance to come up big in a couple of races. She’s also the No. 9seed in the 800, barely half a second behind eighth-seeded Tamara Perez of Anchorage. The pole vault looms large for Seattle Pacific, as all four of its entrants are among the top 8.

Freshman Scout Cai (photo left) is the No. 3 seed at 11 feet, 10½ inches, but has gone as high as 12-4, her state title-winning mark last year at Colfax High School in Eastern Washington. Senior Michaella Kahns is tied for No. 4 at 11-8, sophomore Emma Lambert is No. 7 at11-4 ½; and freshman Ryleigh Crenshaw is

No. 8 at 11-3¾. Western Washington junior Anna Paradee is the big favorite. She’s the only 13-footer in the field, having cleared 13-1¾.SPU is slated for double-digit points in the 400-meter dash (freshman Lani Taylor is the No. 3 seed; senior Cheryl Hong is No. 5) and the high jump (Cai is co-No. 2 at 5-6; Geneva Lehnert is No. 4 at 5-5¾). Lehnert won the GNAC indoor crown in February at 5-5¼.Senior Sammi Markham is seeded in both the javelin (No. 5) and shot put (No. 6). She’s No. 15 in the discus at 123-5½, and probably needs an additional five feet or more to get among the scorers. Disc is the one event in which she did score last year, placing sixth at 128-3¼.

THROUGH THE YEARS AT GNAC

LAST YEAR AT GNAC

Page 4: Outdoor Track & Field · Outdoor Track & Field Seattle Pacific University Mark Moschetti, Assistant SID (206) 281-2772 moschm@spu.edu Fax: (206) 281-2266 May 10, 2017

FALCON FODDER: GNAC EDITION

SO WHAT’S THE STORY THIS WEEK?-- Last spring, the Falcon women fended off a second-day surge by Central Washington to edge the Wildcats by five points for the crown, 148½ -143½.-- Following up on that close call, SPU came from behind on the second day of February’s GNAC Indoor Championships to edge Simon Fraser by 3½ points, 124-120½.-- If the Falcons pull it out this weekend, it would mark the second time they have three-peated outdoors. They did it previously in 2010-11-12.-- The only other three-peater was Western Oregon in 2003-04-05.-- In the first 15 years of the GNAC meet (2002-16), just three schools have won the women’s title: SPU (8), Alaska Anchorage (2) and Western Oregon (4). There was no winner in 2008, as the meet was canceled because of a swine flu incident at Western Oregon.-- SPU’s highest winning total was 224 in 2010.-- The Falcons’ lowest winning total was last year’s 148½. Their lowest total in any meet was 121 (fourth place) in 2014.-- Of the 20 events being contested this weekend, the Falcons are seeded for points in 15 of them on the women’s side.-- The only 2016 champion who’s back for the Falcons is Peyton Harris in the men’s long jump.-- However, SPU also has a pair of 2015 champions who will be looking to add to their title haul: seniors Kyra Brannan (long jump) and Michaella Kahns (pole vault). Brannan did not make the top 8 last year, and Kahns was second.-- Brannan won the GNAC indoor long jump in February and comes into this week ranked 20th in Division II.-- The highest team finish for the Falcon men was second with 85½ points in 2005. That also ranks as their highest GNAC point total.

ALREADY ON THE BOARDSeattle Pacific already has 14 points toward its bid to contend for another conference team crown. Those were earned last week at the GNAC Multi-Event Championships in Nampa, Idaho.Freshmen Scout Cai and Brooke Benner finished second and third, respectively, in the women’s heptathlon. That was worth eight points for Cai and six for Benner.Alaska Anchorage, led by champion Karolin Anders, placed three in the top eight (first-sixth-seventh) for 15 points.

A POSSIBLE FIRST FOR CHARLESON – AND SPU, TOOFalcons junior Mary Charleson is the top seed in the 5,000 by a long way this weekend. In fact, with her time of 16 minutes, 41.59 seconds, she’s the only sub-17 runner in the field. Closest to her is senior teammate Sarah Macdonald at 17:17.21.Should Charleson go on to win the title, it not only would be her first conference crown, it would be Seattle Pacific’s first GNAC title in that race.Of the 21 events on the program, the Falcons have finished atop the GNAC pile in all of them except for the discus, the hammer – and, amazingly enough, the 5K. Seattle Pacific has produced numerous national-caliber distance runners over the years. During the GNAC era, which began in 2002, Falcon runners have won the 800 meters nine times, the 1,500 meters seven times, the 10,000 meters once, and the 3,000 meters (no longer an NCAA outdoor event) twice.

A TICKET TO FLORIDAAs they head to Monmouth, the Falcons have 11 NCAA provisional qualifying marks. Those who ultimately make the cut will head to Bradenton, Fla., for the Division II nationals, set for Thursday through Saturday, May 25-27, at the IMG Academy.LIKELY IN: Mary Charleson (No. 14 in the 5,000), Sammi Markham (No. 12 in the javelin).ALMOST IN (a season-best mark would help seal it): Kyra Brannan (No. 20 in the long jump), Mary Charleson (No. 20 in the 1,500).OUTSIDE LOOKING IN (could make it with a big effort): Scout Cai (tie No. 30 in high jump at 5-6 / 1.68m; needs 5-7 ¼ / 1.71m); Lani Taylor (No. 33 in 400 meters at 55.84; needs 55.11 or better).

CALVERT: TWO GOALS, ONE MORE SHOT AT EACHHannah Calvert’s career will come to a close this week, and the steady senior gets to stretch it out over both days of the meet.In Friday’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, Calvert will be looking to put her name onto the NCAA provisional qualifying list for the first time. Her PR is 11 minutes, 14.67 seconds at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on March 31. The provisional standard is 11:05.00. On Saturday, Calvert will race in the 1,500 meters, seeking to break the 4:40 barrier. Her PR is 4:40.08 on April 22 in Bellingham.

OFF THE RADAR, BUT MAYBE ON THE SCORESHEETA pair of first-year Falcons – neither of them widely known around the conference – are in position to contribute a point or two to their respective teams in the 10,000 meters.Freshman Sedona McNerney comes into the meet seeded No. 7 in the women’s 10K. She ran it in San Francisco on March 31, coming across the line in 38 minutes, 51.04 seconds.Lloyd Byram is graduate student, enrolled in the SPU program that will put him on the path toward becoming a school counselor. Like McNerney, he has raced 10,000 once this spring, winning it on March 25 at the Doris Heritage Distance Festival in West Seattle. He is seeded 10th, and is 20 seconds away from a spot in the top 8.

FAMILIAR FEEL FOR MEN’S 4-BY-4Last spring, the SPU men’s 4x400 relay team was hanging on to the eighth and final conference qualifying spot with one weekend to go. Then, the group of Peyton Harris, Jesse Phan, Adam Avischious, and Justin Ramsey went and ran a season best by nearly three seconds at the Central Washington Last Chance Meet, and moved all the way up to fifth on the GNAC list.Exactly one year to the day later – last Saturday, May 6 – the same situation faced almost exactly the same team. Seattle Pacific came into the Ken Shannon Invitational in No. 8 with the time of 3:26.28 recorded by Lazarus Scarbrough, Phan, Harris, andRamsey on April 22 in Bellingham. They lowered that by more than three seconds, finishing in 3:23.12 and climbing to No. 5.

ONE MORE RUN AT JUNIOR NATIONALSSPU freshman Kate Lilly is still on the cusp of a berth in the USA Track & Field Junior Nationals. Lilly has clocked 4:34.60 in the 1,500 meters. She’ll need to go 4:32.00 or faster on Saturday.Already on the list is freshman Alyssa Foote in the 5,000 meters. She went 17:25.78 at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 13.Junior Nationals, run in conjunction with the U.S. Championships, is set for June 22-24 in Sacramento, Calif..

SCOUTING THE 2017 FALCONSThree in a row. That’s what the Seattle Pacific women have in mind for the 2017 outdoor season. With another indoor championship in their pocket, the Falcons will be out to make it three straight outdoor crowns. They certainly have become very adept at handling close calls, having won the 2016 outdoor title by five points ahead of Central Washington. Then in February, SPU came from an underdog position to edge Simon Fraser by 3½ points for the indoor championship. On the one hand, the Falcons lost seven athletes who were top-8 placers at last year’s GNACs, including Female Athlete of the Meet and three-event champion Maliea Luquin (heptathlon, long jump, 100 hurdles), and individual champions Jahzelle Ambus (400) and Lynelle Decker (1,500).

On the other hand, they have 10 back who were top-8 placers.Leading that group is multi-talented senior Kyra Brannan (photo left), who contributed key points in four events at GNAC, taking fourth in the 100-meter dash, fifth in the 200, running on the third-place 4x100 relay and the fourth-place 4x400. She won the long jump title as a sophomore in 2015, and is coming off winning the GNAC indoor long jump crown this winter. Also among those 10 are six with experience at national meets. Junior Chynna

Phan (photo right) is a two-time indoor All-American on the indoor distance medley relay. This year’s All-American DMR also includes junior Mary Charleson (photo left), who came within one spot in the 1,500 and two spots in the 5,000 of making outdoor nationals last spring. Senior Cheryl Hong was part of

last season’s indoor All-American 4x400 relay.Others with NCAA credentials are senior Hannah Calvert (cross country), junior Becca Houk (indoor track), and sophomore Geneva Lehnert (high jump both indoors and outdoors). And, although she wasn’t a top-8 placer at GNAC last spring, Sarah Macdonald is having an outstanding senior year. She led off the distance medley relay at nationals for her first All-American honor, and was SPU’s front runner at West Regional cross country last fall. The pole vaulting tandem of senior Michaella Kahns (photo right) and sophomore Emma Lambert are back. Kahns took the outdoor crown in 2015 and was second last year, with Lambert third.

A talented crop of freshman has come aboard. Among them is Lani Taylor, last year’s Washington state high school champion in the 400 for medium-sized schools. She ran the 400 leg on the distance medley at NCAAs, so is already an All-American. Scout Cai won back-to-back Washington state small-school pole vault titles, and won the GNAC indoor pentathlon. Brooke Benner was second in the pentathlon, part of a 1-2-3 SPU finish (along with Lehnert), and came up big in the triple jump at conference.

Juniors Peyton Harris (photo top) and Ben Halladay (photo left) lead the way for the men’s team. Harris won the long jump title by a quarter of an inch last spring with a personal-best 23 feet, 5½ inches. He also scored in the 110

hurdles (7th).Halladay was the No. 1 runner for most of last fall on the cross country team.Senior Justin Ramsey (photo right) returns in the 400 meters. He made it into the GNAC finals last spring, placing 8th. Sophomore Jesse Phan, has proven to be a solid 800-meter runner.

THE COACHES Head coach / Program director KARL LERUM

Having successfully continued a long-standing tradition of success with Seattle Pacific’s track and field teams, Karl Lerum is now in his fourth year as director of the school’s entire running program, including cross country, a role he took on in the fall of 2013.Lerum is heading into his 12th year in charge of the SPU track program. In 2015, for the sixth time in school history, and all under his leadership, the Falcon women pulled an indoor-outdoor GNAC team title sweep. They followed that up with a second straight outdoor crown in 2016.A few weeks after the season ended, Lerum was named the 2016 GNAC women’s outdoor Coach of the Year, as well as the USTFCCCA West Region women’s outdoor Coach of the Year. The GNAC award was his seventh. He has swept the women’s indoor and outdoor honors five times: 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2015.He also has six West Region women’s indoor Coach of the Year awards and five outdoor honors, thereby giving him 25 conference and region honors for the winter and spring seasons combined.Of SPU’s 11 conference indoor team title, Lerum has been the man in charge for nine of those.During the 2016 outdoor season, 12 Falcon women posted 17 NCAA provisional qualifying marks (15 individual times / distances plus both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays). Of those qualifiers, Jahzelle Ambus (400), Lynelle Decker (800, 1500), Geneva Lehnert (high jump), Maliea Luquin (100 hurdles) and Jalen Tims (400 hurdles) made it to nationals,

with Decker making All-American in both of her races.Indoors in 2017, Lerum’s Falcons hit 21 NCAA qualifying standards. At the nationals in Birmingham, Ala., the4,000-meter distance medley relay of Sarah Macdonald, Lani Taylor, Chynna Phan, and Mary Charleson raced to an All-American eighth-place finish. It was SPU’s second straight All-American award for that event.Lerum stepped up to the’ coaching helm in October 2005, taking over from Jack Hoyt. He worked as an assistant to Hoyt in 2000, and again in 2003. In between, he spent two years as an assistant coach at Trinity College, an NCAA Division III school in Hartford, Conn.Lerum has quite an impressive athletic background of his own.At Pacific Lutheran University in nearby Tacoma, Lerum made his mark in two sports. On the football field, he set – and still owns – the school career records for receptions and receiving yards. On the track, Lerum has the Lutes record in the 400 meters and is among the school’s top 10 in the decathlon, 110 hurdles, long jump, 100 meters, and javelin. He was an All-American in the decathlon, finishing third at NAIA nationals in 1996 and second in ‘97 and ‘98.After college, Lerum was on the San Francisco 49ers’

roster for the 1998 and 1999 preseason, and played with Amsterdam in NFL Europe. In 2003 and 2004, he was head coach of the Oslo Vikings football program in Norway.Lerum is a graduate of Franklin Pierce High School in Parkland, south of Tacoma. He has a bachelor’s degree in history from PLU and a master’s in history from Trinity. He and son Lucas live in Seattle.

Audra Smith, who started out as a sprinter, became a heptathlete, and now has competed in four marathons, is in her fourth year on the Falcons coaching staff, coming aboard in August 2013

Prior to that, the graduate of Idaho State University spent four years coaching at the University of Washington – one year as a multi-events assistant coach for track, and the past three as a strength and conditioning coach.

Smith starred in the hep at Idaho State, placing second at the Big Sky Conference meet in 2007 by tallying 5,085 points. She also was a member of the victorious 4x100 relay team, and scored in the 100, 200, 100 hurdles, and javelin as the Bengals won the team championship for the first time in school history.

She was a six-time All-Big Sky selection in just two years at the school, and was an USTFCCCA All-Academic pick as a senior, finishing her master’s degree in health education.

A native of Pima, Ariz., Smith and husband Raul live in Seattle.

Assistant Coach AUDRA SMITH

Chris Reed is in his fourth year as an assistant at SPU, joining the staff in December 2013. The native of Klamath Falls in southern Oregon is a 2011 graduate of Western Oregon University, majoring in economics.

On the cross country course, he was a two-time All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference selection, placing seventh as a junior in 2009 and third as a senior in 2010. On the track, Reed raced to a pair of All-GNAC honors, taking third in the 5,000 meters as a freshman in 2008, then placing third in the 1,500 as a senior in 2011. He also was fourth in the 5K as a junior and senior.

Indoors, he won the 2011 GNAC mile title and went on to anchor WOU’s distance medley relay to an All-American finish at the NCAAs later that season. He raced in five national meets (two for cross country and outdoor track, one for indoor track) and finished his career with five Western Oregon school records.

In 2015, Reed was named West Region Women’s Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year by the U.S.Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

He previously was an assistant coach at Western Oregon.

Reed and wife Annie live in Seattle.
