The End of the Revolutionary War

•After a long (1775-1783), and hard-fought war on both sides, General Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia.

•This marked the end of the Revolutionary War.

•25,000 Revolutionaries dead▫8,000 killed in battle, 17,000 died of

disease.•8,500 to 25,000 wounded

The Treaty of Paris

•Treaty= an agreement between two or more countries, usually to end a conflict.

•Agreement between Great Britain and the Colonists (now the United States).

•Recognized American independence. •Added additional territory to the United

States.

•5,000 African Americans served in Patriot militias. Why?

•Thousands more fought for the British. Why?

•Many claimed that slavery contradicted Revolutionary ideals.

•Emancipation slowly begins in the North, since slavery is not very important there.

•Some sold their slaves to the South, where slavery was expanding.
