The time is present. The place is Alexandria, Virginia.

It was a crisp winter day. Battleship clouds drifted past. Seven-year-old Timmy Carlton raced his bike toward the park.

Meanwhile, at a toy factory across town, a whizzing conveyor belt whisked stuffed bears into the packaging center. ZIPPPP went a belt of bears, while another, lined with otters, grounded to a shuttering – GRRRCH.

A red-haired lady leaned forward and squinted. She examined an otter, one sporting a blue ball cap and red bandana around its neck. The lady snatched the otter. She snarled at its mismatched eyes; one was BROWN, the other, BLUE. She shook her head, and marched directly toward the factory’s back door, where without hesitation - FLUNG the poor little critter out – WHOOOOSH.

As Timmy zipped past an overflowing garbage bin, he spotted something. SCREECH went his bike’s tires. Timmy scaled the trash container. He studied something. A gentle snow covered the limp little otter sprawled atop the rubbish heap. Timmy scooped up the discarded critter.

There was something MAGICAL, something about this little otter made him feel warm inside. Timmy grinned proudly and whispered, “this little outcast needs a home and I shall give him one.” And as he wiped the snow from the otter’s face, he swore the little guy smiled.

Later that night, tucked snugly in bed, Timmy declared to the otter, “Outcast. That’s what you are. And that is what I shall call you.”

Then he cradled his newfound companion and drifted to sleep.

As a shaft of moonlight fell across Outcast something remarkablehappened… The little otter crossed to the window, smiled, and whispered, “Lickity-skipity.”

Until the next adventure…
