Their spirits were bound down. Their freedom is still bound down
but their happiness lies in their heart.

Only in my dreams does fate allow me to see her.
Her staggering eyes Breath taking perfume. Her mind boggling touch
Never again to pass my senses Her words serenade me
Lullaby won’t let me sleep again and again I think over and over
“L” only stands for love to me.

Masquerade
Another day begins but we’ll never forget our masks They protect us, shield us… The judgment can’t get in
if we wear our elaborate masks So hide yourself, your identity We think if we’re perfect
no one will question the trials, the hardships We fail to understand
that everyone has conflicts… Yet another day begins
but we’ll never forget our masks for is we did how could we ever
join the masquerade?

Pizza and Cookies!
Pizza isn’t square.
It’s only round.
That is, until,
One is found.
It looked awkward;
Yes, it did.
With all the toppings,
I needed a bib.
Then I said,
“I’ll make one better.”
I needed some dough
So I wrote a letter.
I got the dough;
It was a disaster,
But nothing compared
To my cookie batter.
Pizza is hard to make,
But cookies are not,
Or at least,
That was what I thought.
Chocolate chips
And flour and all,
My cookies would rise
High above all.

Who I Am
The girl who is afraid to hurt the ones she loves.
The person who is loved by her friends and family.
The body that has scars
from the times she has been hurt.
Who I am only I know.
Who I am
is hurt deeply inside.
Who I am is happy on the outside.
Who I am
no one know but me.
Cheyenne DeGail Johnson
Who are you? Who have you become? What happened to you?
I thought by now you’d be done.
Friends? How can we be friends when I don’t know you You claim to know me
but all I see is a stranger. A stranger, never a we.
Lies! Lies! Nothing but lies!
To me! Even to you! Nobody seems to die, but you inside. And it’s hurting you, but you still do.
I seem to recall an old friend,
but nothing like you. Her…well she’s dead.
Now a different person you’ve become.
So I ask Who are you?
Who have you become? What happened to you?
A new, dark you has begun. And I’m done.

What Transylvania Mean to Me
So the time has come to leave this place
this place I do call home
where everyones your neighbor
and running white squirrels roam
where three hours exploring is nothing new
I’ll enjoy it all the while
and walking down that old dirt road
now it seems like it’s a mile
where I know I made friends worth making
in this big town of stone
I will never, ever forget this place,
this place I do call home.
Chesney Reid
What Transylvania Mean to Me
They asked me to tell
my story, so here it goes.
When I was little I liked
to wiggle my toes.
On the porch,
or in the grass,
when the deer would pass.
I liked to swing on the swings.
With my toes,
mom would play the three little pits.
Sometimes we would make a fire,
and collect little twigs.
I loved the fall,
when we would all,
jump in a leaf pile.
In the summer we would play in the creeks,
or maybe play hide-and-go-seek.
My birthday was always a treat,
because most times we would go to grandma’s,
which was neat.
I still love drinking out of water fountains,
and I love the mountains.
I love all my family,
no matter where in Transylvania County.

i say hello, you say goodbye was all this really jut one big lie? cuz if it is, just let me know so i can recover before i go
i guess i just thought we could be something more but i wasn’t prepared for what was in store three months of silence was finally enough for me to step in and call your bluff
now don’t get me wrong; you’re one swell guy with your determining will to reach for the sky but do you truly care? i guess i’ll never know until i say goodbye, and you say hello.
I am a basketball player.
For me, the net is too high.
I will not jump
So I must shoot to the sky.
My team is here.
Their team is there.
Joe is on Bill.
I must find my pair.
The ball comes to me.
I pass the ball away,
Hoping to get
The ball again today.
Swoosh goes the basket
As I just shoot the ball.
The ball’s in our possession
So to get the ball I must call.
I get the ball again
With ten seconds to go,
Down by one,
I make one final throw.

Frog
On a lily pad
The frog sits,
Lolls his limp tongue,
Rests his tired eyes
Between his front legs,
Looks up, hungry,
Shoots his long tongue
At a passing mosquito,
Blinks, then swallows;
Then he sleeps
With tummy all full,
Sleeps all afternoon
In green, slimy water.

Crackle of Leaves
Walking through the woods, I hear the crackle of the leaves,
A whistle of a dove, And squirrels barking in the distance.
They don’t see me so there must be something. Then a flash of brown and white, A crackle of the leaves, And two fawns appear.
Curious, yet weary of danger, I slowly approach.
As they twist and turn their heads, They wonder what I am.
What a wonderful day in the woods!

ZZ Rider
Riding in the wind, Two pointing the canter, Flicks his long tail,
Neighs, His left lead,
Cantering in the pasture, Starting the trot, Choppy, but free,
Walking at a slow pace, Swaying from side to side,
Stopping to a halt, I dismount ZZ Rider,
Walking him to his stable, Feeding him, Brushing him, Pampering him, Resting him,
Until the next ride.

What Transylvania County Means to Me
To all who haven’t been, Transylvania is a place of
Racing cities or quiet streams.
Although it’s country, we are still having fun
Never a dull moment
Songbirds sing come springtime
You can’t match it’s beauty
Land a trout in the French Broad
Visit a stream, or hike a trail
Also, bike riding is big here
Not going anywhere,
I can’t imagine being somewhere else
Any other place, I couldn’t call home

Ourselves
We are like the stars in the midnight sky, eventually we flicker and die. Some of us might shine brightly,
others not so brightly but the truth is that we all will show
some brilliant light for the others to follow. We all serve a purpose,
but this purpose depends on oneself’s ability to fulfill what we are meant for.
This is our truth.

What Transylvania County Means to Me Brenna McJunkin Transylvania County includes the city of Brevard, the town of Rosman, Pisgah Forest, Penrose, and Toxaway. It has been named The Land of the Waterfalls and the home of the white squirrel but when I think about it, I think of home, beauty, the mountains, and the history that took place here. It is a special place to me because I have been here all of my life. First, I think of Transylvania County as my home because I was born and I am being raised in this county. My house is here and my family is here so it is easy to call it my home. My family has been here for years and they have also grownup here. I have gone to elementary, middle, and high school here so this county has raised me and it is all I have ever known. Secondly, I think of Transylvania County as a beautiful place. From the Blue Ridge Parkway to the waterfalls in the forest, we have been so blessed with the beauty of our home. When you go on a hike or see tourists on the street, it never fails that you hear someone talking about what a beautiful county we have. Lots of times, if you talk to these tourists they will tell you that they came here to see the waterfalls or to go hiking on the Parkway. I think lots of times we take this county for granted and we don’t realize how lucky we are to live here. Next, when I think about Transylvania County, I think of the mountains. Wherever you are in the county you are always reminded of the mountains. Whatever time of year it is, you see the beauty of them whether it’s in the spring when the trees are getting their new green color, the summer when the blossoms are blooming on them, the fall when the leaves are changing colors, or the winter when there is snow hanging off of them. It is amazing how the mountains contribute to our county’s beauty. Finally, Transylvania County is important for the history it holds. It is amazing to think that Rosman used to be the big town in the county because of its tanning company, wood yards, and saw mills. These were all very important places for our grandparents and great-grandparents. Also bluegrass was played and sang a lot in this county, church was important and most everybody attended a church somewhere. It is amazing how times have changed four our county and how our needs and priorities are so much different than they were for our ancestors. For everyone who has grown up n Transylvania County, this county plays a very important role in our life. When you leave here to go on vacation you are able to see different counties and you see what they’re like but it is always so nice to come back home and it makes you realize what a beautiful place we have here. Living here has taught me so much about this place and I am very lucky and thankful to call this beautiful, historical county my home.

You push your way through the crowd You push and push your own way out, but when you think you’re to the end,
The road comes to another bend.
it’s hard, it’s rough, it’s so, so tough,
is it really worth the pain, You’re sick and tired of the games.
You’re cold and scared,
and everything you can’t bear. It’s the fear of being alone
it’s like your heart you don’t even own.
But you are not the only one, Everyone’s begun, begun this journey, this journey to see.
You push your way through the crowd, you push and push your own way out,
you will get there eventually, eventually you’ll see.

My knight in shining armor has never appeared, But all of these jokers Ones I’ve once deared. They’d be of the false one Riding away, snatching me up, As they ride into the sun. And even though they cared the least bit They were comforting, Until reality hit. Eventually they’d leave, Leaving me behind, Laughing as they said goodbye. And there I would be, Standing all alone, Not knowing me. And here I still am Waiting for him to appear, Forgetting the lion, being a lamb. But I know he’ll come, Like the sun will always rise, Someday, someday, my knight will come. Jacey Voris
What’s The Point?
What’s the point of breathing
When you don’t have friends.
What’s the point of loving
When you don’t have someone there
What’s the point of smiling
When you have nothing to smile about.
What’s the point of living
When your alone.
What’s the point?

The Truth Revealed
Though you are beautiful, I have found that your beauty is only a mask to hide the hideous truth
within your heart and mind. The truth reveals itself.
You are twisted, corrupt and dark. I find that although this darkness is in itself beautiful it is, as always,
a horrible thing. Caleb Shugart

Personal Wars
All give some, some give all Inside ourselves everyday we fight a war.
We kill ourselves slowly day by day hour by hour, minute by minute
We fall slowly plummeting to earth. Falling a little more each time.
As we see the bright light
above we look to people around us, all we see, sadness and pain.
Our personal wars consume us.
A giant black hole underneath us. Sucking us into its depths.
When will we see the light again?
Hell burning down below, but Heaven above shining through.
Bringing us to its light Lifting us higher and higher.
Let us believe
in Heaven and Hell. May our personal Wars end. Let us live in poverty
And sadness no more.
As we fight to climb higher and Higher we’re dragged down. The Pull seeming stronger. As we fight
Our own personal wars.

When Sadness Comes Times like today, I turn my back to everything. I shun the world. Lock myself in myself. I dream though I am awake. bad dreams, terrible dreams. Sometimes I see myself falling, falling, falling into a dark abyss nobody understands but everyone has been in. This is where I stay, on most days. Days I am sad, or tired, or usually just lonely. Sometimes, all three. I feel cold though it may be mid-July, and my eyes become heavy. The clouds cry with me. They shed tears of ice and block the sun. It gets dark early, and night comes. The dark, dreary, evil hand of Sadness takes hold of my sagging shoulder. He comforts me on these days. The evermore tear streaked face reminds me of my own. I cry, and rely on Sadness to dry my tears with his we hand. These days bring Sorrow home. He comes into my house with no invitation, and crawls into my bed with his shoes still on. Aly Pagano

Shadow Weavers
I weave these shadows together. The shadows I call my own. They form this life I share with them. These shadows are a forgotten past haunted present changing future They depend on my I depend on them It’s a mutual dependence I share. The shadows surround us all as we weave them for ourselves. Maybe some avoid them. Others delve into their own. I prefer to control my own past, present, and future. The shadow weavers are ourselves. Maybe you, yourself will have a good future. It depends on how you weave your shadows. Now go and move them for the better. I await the results of my own. This is life.

Love
It wants to heal you
But at many times
It may seem that it wants to kill you
You want to have it around
For rainy days and of course
When you’re feeling down
Everyone has felt love
At least once in their lives
It reminds many of heaven above
Sometimes it comes down like a dove
Yet at other times it feels like darks clouds hovering above
Yet we all want to feel it
Because we all want to be loved

Monster! I run; it chases me. Everywhere I go it follows. It creeps up on me at night. It calls my name and reminds me of the things I have done. It lingers around me. Its cold, dead fingers wrap around my ankles, like a ball and chain. It holds me in place. Its claws penetrate my skin. Its voice, a dark husky growl that comes from the depth of its soul, calls out to me. I try to cover my ears but I can still hear that voice. It s breath, with the stench of thousands of dead corpses, burns my nose and makes my eyes water. You may ask what this horrible monster is…This monster is the horrors of the past and the terrors and suspense of the future. Ari Reid

Who Am I?
Who am I? I am nothing. I am undefined. I am a hollow shell, I don’t stand for anything, I can’t be my own person. I bend and I sway to others wills. I don’t fight back. Who am I? I try to be myself, but what is that? I don’t know how to be myself. I am confused and alone in this world of people who know who they are and what they stand for. I am just the girl next door, no depth, no soul, no life of her own. Afraid to be anything I try to be something I’m not, but how do I know that I am not that something when I am nothing at all. Who am I? Right now, I am nothing till someone defines me. Ari Reid

What Transylvania Mean to Me
Transylvania County has always been a safe haven to me. It is my home. It’s where I was raised, where I
learned many life lessons, and where I will leave my legacy.
Everyone native to “The Land of the Waterfalls” seems to know each other as friends. We show respect for all
those here, and help those in need. No matter what the problem there always seems to be someone to lean on. There’s
always a friend to pull you out of the rut you’re in no matter how deep.
Many a kind of people live here, ranging from dedicated teachers to hardworking farmers, and everyone in
between. We all depend on these people for support. We depend on the teachers to provide us with the knowledge
needed for life outside of this home. We depend on the farmers to provide us with food, and sustenance so we can go
another day doing the things needed for this county.
Though many people can not wait to leave this place, the day I do will be the day a large piece of myself is
ripped away. With people with hearts as clear as the waterfalls that give this county its nickname, who can truly say
they hate this place. It is a place of security for many who live here and I foresee this for the next 150 years.

All This Time?
All this time, I spend not liking him Anymore. I convince myself I was caught up, Caught up in fulfilling the Middle school crave, Love. All this time, I work to ignore him. I try to forget all the dreams, of us, of him. All this time, I’ve told myself I don’t like him But through all that, Have I, All this time, Loved him?

School is a puzzle
School is a puzzle
Where everyone has to fit
We all have a place
A place to fit in
If not here then there
But say, where do I fit
With the ones in sports
Or the ones into books
Or maybe just the ones who accept me
Because the school is a puzzle
Where do I fit
