At our recent Cottage Meetings, there seemed to be some recurring questions and confusion regarding who does

what, when, where and how. Before I was the Advisory Chair, I had never really given our League directory much thought, except as my “go to” source for email addresses and cell phone numbers. I realize the directory, with all of its history, the Strategic Plan (what does

that mean, really?), the Annual Plan and the formally written Bylaws, can seem a bit overwhelming, but it is truly the best place to get any and ALL information regarding our League and its processes and procedures. Wouldn’t it be great if we had the time to sit down and read the directory cover-to-cover? Absolutely!! Do I think we all have that time? No!

Therefore, I want to take a few minutes of your time and point out a few items from the directory. Page 19, the Fund Disbursements for 2009-2010, is a page we should be proud of - page 19 lists in black and white how hard we worked last year to give back to our community. One of the best resources in the directory is the What to Do When… chart on Page 20. It’s a quick snapshot of exactly what it says – what to do, who to contact and when to do it – for many common questions that pop up over the year. Page 26 gives you the “big picture”, otherwise known as the Annual Plan, for this year. Pages 27-31, the entire Placements tab, lists everyone in the League and where they are volunteering this year. If you are curious if you have a job the night of the ball, or if you have a job the weekend of the market, this is the place to look. I’m fairly certain the Active & Provisionals and Sustainers tabs are the most-used sections of the book. They are for me!

And then we get to the Bylaws…{sigh}. What are they? What do they mean? Am I really supposed to understand all this mumbo-jumbo?? Don’t be afraid to jump right into the mumbo-jumbo and get to know how your League works. By numbering the pages this year instead of referring to our Bylaws by section number, this section is entirely more approachable than it’s ever been. Page 70 is the index for all things JLL. It would take way too much time and way too much space to walk you through every single article, but if you have a specific question about a rule or policy for our League, start on Page 70, and then don’t be afraid to ask someone. Ask one of your Board Members. Refer back to the chart on Page 20 and send the contact person a quick email, or give her a quick phone call. We, as a League, are “Here to Serve” – and that means we are “here to serve” each other too.

The spring is a busy time for our League – Charity Ball, Spring Market, Placement Packets, May Celebration – oh my!! It’s easy to remember all the “big ticket” items and events that happen during these next few months, but we can’t overlook all the other placements and committees that will continue to meet and work as well. The warmer months also tend to find us pulled in several different directions (at the same time!) in our personal lives with family commitments and children who need to be chauffeured here and there. We are a hardworking group of women who have chosen to make volunteering and giving back to our community a priority. Elizabeth Andrew said, “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” I think that sums us up perfectly. We may not always have the time, but we have the heart…so we make the time.

2. My husband and I have four kids and I’m a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) and provide anesthesia primarily at Memorial Hospital.

3. I attended Clemson University and teach Kindergarten at Burley Primary. My husband and I moved to Lufkin in 2001 and we are happy to call Texas “home” now. We have a wonderful son that is three years old.

4. I am a cancer survivor and I love to travel…I have been to Hong Kong, Beijing, Paris, Italy and Mexico. I love my yorkie-poo, Abigail!

5. I’m a Speech Pathologist and I have the best, most fun and most loving family of five.

6. I taught school for 29 years and have one son, a 5th grader, and one daughter, an 8th grader.

7. I have a fabulous, hard-working husband and three terrific kids and I love to cook.

Well, it’s that time of year again! Tax time! It’s the time of year that I get to do what I really love. It’s that time of

year that I get to do A LOT of what I really love. That being said, you probably heard a lot in the media regarding the sweeping tax package that was signed into law in December. What you may not have heard yet is that if you have a

few of the items that were extended by the tax package included in your individual income tax return, you cannot file your return with the IRS until mid to late February. (I know you are in a rush!) If you itemize deductions, take the above-the-line deduction of $250 for educator expenses, or if you claim the higher education tuition and fees deduction, the IRS is not set up to accept your return just yet. The tax package is entitled, “Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010”, and includes among many other items, an extension of the Bush-era tax cuts for two years, estate tax relief, a two-year “patch” of the alternative minimum tax (AMT), a two-percentage point cut in employee-paid payroll taxes and in self-employment tax for 2011, new incentives to invest in machinery and equipment, and a host of retroactively resuscitated and extended tax breaks for individuals and businesses. Some of the key elements of the package include:

•Thecurrentincometaxrateswillberetainedfortwoyears(2011 and 2012), with a top rate of 35% on ordinary income and 15% on qualified dividends and long-term capital gains. •Keycreditsforworkingfamiliesthatwereenactedorexpanded in the American Recovery and Reinvestment act of 2009 will be retained. Specifically the new law extends the $1,000 child tax credit and maintains its refundability for two years in addition to extending some rules for earned income credit and the higher education credit.

•Businessescanwriteoff100%oftheirqualifiedequipmentand machinery purchases, effective for property placed in service after September 8, 2010 through December 31, 2011. For 2012, the new law provides for 50% additional first year depreciation.

•Theabilitytoinclude an itemized deduction for state and local general sales tax instead of state and local income tax has been extended through 2011.

•Theestatetaxisbackafteraone-yearhiatus.Theexemption amount has been increased to $5 million per individual for 2011 and will be indexed for inflation in the following years. In addition, if one spouse does not use the entire $5 million exemption, the remainder may be used by the surviving spouse, making the exemption “portable”.

I know these provisions must surely excite you as much as they do me! There are a few other items to keep in mind when filing your 2010 income tax return. •Youcantakeacharitabledeductionforvolunteermilesyou have driven during the year. The amount is 14¢ per mile. You should produce and retain a log sheet of the miles you have driven in service of a charitable organization, just like you would have to produce if you deduct business mileage. The key items would include an odometer reading, the purpose of your charitable endeavor, as well as the total mileage for the trip.

Cottage Meetings were a huge success! Special thanks to the following ladies who

opened their homes to members: Shelli Ellis, Lindsey Goforth, Gina Green, Susan Harris, Allyson Langston, Samie Montes, Cindy Neal, and Donna Quarles. Thank you for your willingness to serve and your

dedication to the League. At the Cottage Meetings, members enjoyed small group discussion in an intimate and relaxing atmosphere. Hopefully you were able to meet someone new and/or strengthen previous relationships. Based on the topics presented, the Board has a lot of wonderful ideas in store for the future of the League. It will be exciting to see how these ideas are implemented and how we, as a League, can better serve our community. I look forward to seeing everyone back at the February General Meeting. I hope everyone had a great holiday season. I know that our community had a blast during the Family Day at

the MET event held on Sunday, December 19th. Tons of families came out to admire

the gorgeous trees and participate in the Christmas festivities. The kids got to create holiday inspired items such as bookmarks and cards, while they satisfied their sweet tooth with cookies provided by JLL and others. We were able to provide over 8 dozen cookies for this community event. The kids also had a chance to participate in a cup cake walk, tour the art galleries, and listen to an amazing story during story time. But, Santa stole the show when he dropped in to visit everyone. Each child was given a chance to talk to Santa and take photos. A special thanks to Anna Wyatt, Brooke Vann, Shanelle Stewart, and Tara Thompson for providing all the delicious cookies. I will let everyone know about the upcoming events at the MET as soon as I have details.

I absolutely love February and especially Valentine’s Day as it gives us all an excuse to pause and be silly and do, special things for the people we love. Still, I told myself I would not

write about LOVE this month as for one it is far too obvious of a topic for February, and more importantly because I am far from an expert on such matters! But, as I sit here to write…the topic of LOVING BETTER keeps coming to mind despite my desire to avoid the topic all together. So, I am going to give in, and take a time out to share some humble thoughts on loving better. I hope you guys will forgive me for choosing an obvious February topic that I have clearly no expertise in! This thought on LOVING BETTER really started way before today, more like a few weeks ago when I was hugging my daughter real tight the morning that she started back to school after the holidays. I felt her melt in my arms. So, I squeezed harder and when I let her go tears were running down her cheeks. She explained to me that she does not really like hugs anymore because they always feel like someone is saying good bye for a long time. My son on the other hand saw all of this and rolled his eyes. Then in the next breath he asked if I would watch how high he could throw his lunch box in the air outside. That morning it really hit me just how different their needs are when it came to feeling loved. To experiment and lighten the mood, I declared that week to be “Obnoxious Amounts of Attention Week”. I showered them both with an enormous amount of hugs and attention. I asked it of them too in return! Everyone got massive amounts of hugs and “at a boys” during every step of their day that we were together. It was truly a joyous and hilarious week after they decided to let their guard down and go along with it. By the end of the week, even the dog and cat were running from us with worry in their eyes about all the hugging and attention we were giving them! More importantly, Mattie loved getting hugs again. She learned how to also be a better sister and compliment others more. Whit loved receiving more verbal affirmation. He learned how to be a better brother and hug more. I know I could not possibly love them more. I did learn that week how to love them BETTER, and how to look closer at their needs so that I give them more of what they each specifically need to feel loved better. We all grew closer

with the exception of the animals that are now pretty much hiding from us under the dining room table. Of course in our busy lives, not every week can be “Obnoxious Amounts of Attention Week”, nor will Mattie and Whit always be into the notion of loving each other better as various sibling issues inevitably come up. I think we did learn that week that when it comes to people that we truly love, the Golden Rule alone just may not be enough. I have always aimed to do unto others as I would want them to do unto me. Although, just because I want someone to pour me a glass of wine, and talk with me for hours curled up on the couch does not mean that is what my daughter, son, friend, sister, aunt, or parent needs. Also, if within my busy schedule I want to truly be the best mother, friend, sister, niece, or daughter I can be, then I need to take the time to learn how to love them all BETTER. I know in my house Mattie will be smothered with more hugs and Whit will be getting more “at a boys”!! We are all at the point in our lives where we can really make a difference in the people’s lives that matter to us. As women, we often set the nurturing tone in our families. I challenge you to take a time out during this month of love to learn what our special people need most and to love better!!

I cannot tell a lie. I was a little trepidatious about getting in to the Junior League. I re-ally did not know much about it, but was

pretty sure it had been mentioned in a southern movie such as Something To Talk About, or in a book like The Help, where a group of women are sitting around eating finger sandwiches and saying things like, “Excuse me dahlin’, I could

use a pinch more sweet tea if you ain’t too busy washin’ my dishes.” To be quite honest, I wasn’t sure I’d fit in. I’m not one to nosh on too many finger sandwiches when you can just as easily get a footlong sandwich for $5. Besides, who washes dishes anymore? Throw them in the dishwasher, chili stains and all. There was also the fear that I would have to begin brushing my hair, and wearing heels when dropping my children off at school. That was not going to happen. In fact, unless heels gain popularity with sweat pants or oversized hoodies, they will never be my friend. However, when Paula Werner told me that she was going to call my home every morning to find out why I didn’t come in to work out at the gym or to see if I wanted to become a member of the Junior League, guess which one I chose? That’s right! Bring on the finger sandwiches dahlin’s, I’m here for the long-haul. I must admit, I’m glad I am involved in the League. Being a Pro-visional has been a wonderful decision. I was excited at one of my first League meetings to hear about the books that were being sent in to female inmates who could record stories for their children to listen back to. Junior Leagues were doing that? The baskets that we

gave money towards, donated time to, and went to feed hungry fami-lies at Thanksgiving. Junior League was responsible for that? Or the opportunities that I heard about at Christmas time for needy chil-dren or hurting families. Junior League gave me the opportunity to serve those people! We could all use a good lesson in things being less about “us” and more about “them.” I’m glad to know this group serves that purpose. So if you are new to the League, or maybe just haven’t found your place yet, come find me! I’ll be the one at the back of the room in my sweats and heels eating my Subway sandwich. My hair may be a mess, but I don’t care. And neither does the Junior League. After all, it’s not about us.

Jan and Tom Paxson traveled to Atlanta, GA. to visit their daughter Kristen during the holidays. Then they all continued on to Alexandria, VA. to visit their youngest daughter Patricia and husband Dan. In January, Patricia and Dan moved to West Park, New York due to a promotion for Dan. Patricia resigned her job with Congressman Louie Gohmert and has been accepted to The Culinary Institute of America in New York. She is excited about her new career path. Jan also has two works of her art on display in the Assistance League of Houston Celebrates Texas Art. This is a juried exhibition at the Williams Tower Gallery in Houston. Martha and John Bates are proud grandparents again. Daughter Karen and husband Derrick Novakowski are the parents of Eva Elizabeth, born Nov 23, 2010, in Dallas. She is named after John’s mother, Eva Bates. Martha enjoyed a two week visit in Dallas after Eva’s birth and in January Baby Eva came to Lufkin for her first visit. Also, Martha’s daughter-in-law, Jenny Bates has a minor role in the new movie, “Bernie”. It will be in theaters this spring. She has a non-speaking part as Shirley MacLaine’s granddaughter. Jenny has to cry in several scenes, but doesn’t speak. The story is about a murder in Carthage, TX. and stars Matthew McConaughey and Jack Black. It was filmed in Bastrop, TX. Hayley Haglund, daughter of Vickie and Marty Evans and Lisa and Wayne Haglund is engaged to Eason Davis. Eason flew from London to Lufkin to propose during the Christmas holidays! Hunter and Leeanne (Friesen) Haglund are expecting a baby boy the end of May. This will be the first grandchild for Andrea and Gip Friesen and the second for the Vickie and Marty Evans and Lisa and Wayne Haglund. Liz Jeffrey’s youngest daughter, Michelle Martin, is engaged to Johnnie Maroul from Fort Worth. The wedding will be next fall. Michelle lives in Fort Worth, but thrilled her family with a surprise visit on Christmas Eve. Kerstin Andrews, daughter of Cindi and John Andrews, won her school’s spelling bee on Friday, January 14th. She is a fifth grader at St. Cyprian’s and will represent the school at the Kiwanis Spelling Bee in March. Carol Bradley has just returned from a week in Honolulu where she presented two papers at an international conference on education. She really enjoyed her trip. Carol is now back to another busy semester teaching at SFA.

Emily Watts’ son Chip has been doing residency interviews over the past few weeks. He has interviewed in Rochester, MN. at the Mayo Clinic , in Boston at Harvard, and other places mostly in the Southeast. Emily flew to Charleston, South Carolina to join Chip after an interview there and they had a great time exploring Charleston together. Chip will find out in March where he will be doing his Radiology Residency. He will graduate from medical school on June 4, 2011.

Many Lufkinites traveled to Austin for the wedding of Katie Friesen, daughter of Rona and Philllip, to Bryan Lawhon in December. It was a beautiful ceremony and fun filled reception. Everyone had a great time! Suzanne and Bryan Alston have spent the last several months in Fredericksburg, living in their RV at Lady Bird Park. They are enjoying hiking and climbing Enchanted Rock, Pedernales Falls, Lost Maples, and exploring Bandera, Kerrville, Llano, Wimberley, Comfort, and others. Suzanne says they have enjoyed the friendly people, events, festivals, restaurants, sunrises, and sunsets. They even run into Lufkinites sometimes! The Alstons will be home for a few weeks to work on the Lauren Alston Foundation and another fundraiser then back to RVing. [email protected].

On Wednesday, March 2, Delly Beekman, current President of the Association of Junior Leagues International, will be in Lufkin. All Provisionals, Actives, and Sustainers are welcome to attend our General Meeting that evening to meet Delly and learn about the Stratetgic Roadmap Initiative. Social time will begin at 6:30 and the Meeting will begin at 7:00. We look forward to seeing EVERYONE there! Location to be announced in next month’s Our View.
