Dearly Beloved in Christ,

“Now the young man Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor

with the Lord and also with man’’ (1Samuel 2: 26)

The Bible has interesting stories of how men and women in different places

and circumstances are called by God for specific tasks. Children are seldom

included in those categories.

The book of Samuel begins with the calling of the young boy, Samuel.

Elkanah and Hanna prayed for a baby, the Lord granted their petition. They

named him Samuel which meant ‘asked of God’. All his life, Samuel was a

giant man of prayer. The devout parents dedicated the baby to the Lord, as

he was God’s gift. Samuel grew up in Shiloh in the ‘presence of the Lord’.

He led a life of service there, with the older priest Eli. While visiting Samuel

each year, Hanna brought him a new robe, she made for him for his

tabernacle service. Surely, he enjoyed his parents’ encouragement and

guidance. They gave priority to spiritual matters and gave him training in the

way they wanted him to grow. Unfortunately, many parents today focus on

material concerns while ignoring spiritual needs. Three things which parents

have to pay attention in bringing up children are followed here. Samuel’s

parents lived a model life before him. Albert Einstein once said, “Setting an

example is not the main means of influencing others. It is the only means.’’

Children should be given good training. “Train a child in the way he should

go, even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6) Also

parents must pray fervently for their children. Hanna is an example to us in

her prayers.

Samuel must have been deeply troubled to see the wickedness of Eli’s sons.

They needed far stronger disciplines. They were committing sins worth of

death. But the Lord was with Samuel and preserved him from the

wickedness around him as He was with Joseph in Egypt. The Lord can

protect our children also in this present evil world. The Lord was preparing

Samuel for His future plans. In contrast to the wickedness of Eli’s sons, is

the faithfulness of Samuel. He centered his life on service to God even at

that early age. As he grew, his relationship with the Heavenly father grew

stronger. Such a deep bond enabled him to become the ‘faithful prophet’ of

Israel. God was about to bring judgment to the house of Eli. But he blessed

Elkana, Hanna and their house. At that time spiritual leaders were corrupt.

God’s people became disobedient and God was not speaking to His people.

It was a tragic time in the history of Israel. The silence of God was His

judgment. But God changed the situation by speaking His precious word to

young Samuel. He had an attentive ear and a humble heart to obey. As

Samuel grew, the Lord was with him. While the Lord was against Eli and his

sons, the Lord blessed Samuel and his ministry.

We are celebrating the World Sunday School day on the first Sunday of

November. Robert Raikes, an English Publisher, started the first Sunday

School in 1780 in England. The Mar Thoma Sunday School Samajam was

established on 25th February 1905 at the Maramon Convention. The motto

of our Sunday School Samajam is “Come to Jesus, bring every child to

Jesus’’. Jesus called the children to Him and said, “Let the children come to

me do not hinder them, for to such, belongs the kingdom of heaven”

(Matthew 19: 14). To lead a Christian life in today’s world is a big challenge

to our children. Bring them to Sunday School and get them connected to

Christ at an early age. Let them grow in the Lord like Samuel.

May God bless us all, With Prayers, Rev. Sajit Thomas John, Vicar.

Dearly Beloved, “Those who bring thanksgiving as their sacrifice honor me; to those who go the right way I will show the salvation of God.”

Psalm 50:23 (NRSV)

Examining Psalms 50 as a whole, shows the characteristics of a worshiper that brings joy to the heart of God: gratitude to God, obedience, prayer, and a desire to glorify God. “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him.” John 4:23 (NRSV). This is the type of worshiper that will see the salvation of God. This November as we are celebrating Thanksgiving. Let us examine out hearts and see how truly grateful to God we are. The Israelites were freed

from slavery and were being taken to the Promise Land, but throughout their journey they were grumbling and complaining. Being grateful is a choice. The Pilgrims did not allow their feelings or circumstances to determine whether or not they would exercise gratitude and thanksgiving. Even in the hard times they continued to believe and worship God. They knew God was in control. Even though the first few months here in America were brutal, when they experienced blessings – their first thoughts were to give thanks to God. It is easy to worship God when things are going well but the Pilgrims give us an example of trusting God and worshiping God – even in difficult times. They did not know if they would survive, but they kept their faith. They faced great challenges, but they knew that God was with them. May God enable all of us to have a similar faith and to worship God with true thanksgiving in spirit and truth. Yours in Christ’s Service, Rev. Shibi Abraham, Youth Chaplain.

APPEAL TO ALL PARISH MEMBERS

“Unless the LORD builds the House, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the City, the watchman stays awake in vain” (Psalm 127:1) Dearly beloved in Christ, Greetings to you in the precious name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. By the Grace of our LORD ALMIGHTY, recently we completed the foundation work of the new parsonage. The next stage of construction will be progressing and the update will be informed periodically. Our parsonage belongs to all the members of the parish and therefore, everyone’s contribution and prayerful participation is very important. In this matter, a General Body decision was taken previously. The Parish General Body decided that all the Parish members shall donate a minimum of $250 (it can be any amount above $250) towards the construction. Accordingly, the Executive Committee decided to approach you with this appeal for your valuable donation to this project. On behalf of the Executive Committee and the parsonage construction committee, we request your support for the project. Let us celebrate the bond of fellowship in our parsonage construction. With Love and Prayers Yours in His Ministry,
