What We Do We are a non-profit, drop-in community centre for seniors located in the heart of South Granville/Fairview. Founded in 1979, the South Granville Seniors Centre has been a strong and active pillar in the Granville/Fairview community ever since. As a non-municipal, independent centre run by a non-profit organization, we are dependent on the support and generosity of community partners and members, while our small staff team and dedicated volunteers manage day-to-day operations. Here at the Centre, we provide a variety of drop-in programs and services for 450+ senior members and 1,500+ seniors in our community (including recreational, wellness, exercise, and food programs). The majority of these programs are facilitated and supported by senior volunteers, providing older adults with varied opportunities to continue to share their skills and knowledge with others in their later years. Our centre offers a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and friendly space for seniors to meet, connect with others, and keep active.

“We acknowledge the financial assistance of the Province of British Columbia”

Happy Spring to all!

I am back from a wonderful vacation with my family in Colombia. Thank you everybody for giving the Senior Center’s staff your support while I was away. I have come back with new energy and I am looking forward to another successful year with your help and commitment. Thanks to all of you who came to the Volunteer Appreciation Party. We just wanted to show you how much we appreciated your time, your commitment and your contribution. We have more than 110 permanent volunteers and 200 casual volunteers who put in approximately 12,000 hours of work last year. Incredible!

Income tax clinics open on March 1st. We have dedicated volunteers who can help you with your taxes. If you need your income taxes filed, please register today by calling us at (604)732-0812!

Annual Planning Meeting: we want to invite all members on March 15th from 1:00pm to 2:30 to come to the Annual Planning Meeting. Please bring your ideas, comments, suggestions. Remember this is your Centre and we want to hear from you.

Once again we are collecting donation for our main fundraising event the “Spring Bazaar”. Please clean your house and donate what you are not using any more. One of the participants said” The Bazaars are all about getting together and supporting the community”.

Thank you again and I am look forward to seeing you at the Annual Planning Meeting. All the best,

ClemenciaClemenciaClemenciaClemencia

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION PARTY

HIGHLIGHTS

The South Granville Seniors Centre’s Volunteer Appreciation Party was a huge success, where we were able to share memories and lots of laughter. During the afternoon, we even had one of our volunteers, Daryl, and his singing quartet serenade us for Valentine’s Day! This was only part of the fun many volunteers had celebrating their hard work and efforts. To make this day even better, we were incredibly fortunate to have the following organizations donate to our event.

Best advice I’ve received from my bus-riding friends: have your butt in the seat before the bus takes off and don’t get up until it comes to a stop. Saves us from falling. In this cold and dry weather, putting a wee swab of Vaseline in your nose will help with the dry stuffiness. You can put your vegetable peelings in a pot, add water and bring it to a slow simmer to make a vegetable stock. I’ve heard that most bags holding tea have some plastic in them so are not good for the compost (the bags that is, not the tea). Easier way to clean that pesky tub? Try using an old dish scrubber brush. You know the ones with the longer plastic handle? Sprinkle baking soda in the tub then use the brush to clean. A bit easier than getting on your knees. And here’s something I didn’t know; skeins of wool usually have a pattern on the inside of the paper sleeve. If we don’t believe in freedom of expression for those we despise, we don’t believe in it at all. - Noam Chomsky - Sharon Esson
