At Belmont Village of Sunnyvale we are constantly looking for ways to improve the quality of our services. As we seek to improve services, customer feedback becomes extremely important. When we receive detailed and honest feedback we are able to adjust, improve, and perfect our services. Here are some of the highlights from the responses to last year’s survey: For Belmont Village of Sunnyvale Residents: • 1% of our residents are “given opportunities to build friendships with other residents” • 4% of our residents’ “health care needs are being met” • 6% of our residents report the “community is properly maintained.” For Belmont Village of Sunnyvale Resident Family Members: • 8% of family members feel “staff responds timely to requests for assistance” • 3% of family members feel that their relatives’ “health care needs are being met” • 100% of the families report that “Belmont Village provides me the security I want.” Overall, the 2016 survey was very positive. We are determined to continue improving the quality of service being provided throughout our community and thank you for your participation and feedback. Please never hesitate to come see me if you have additional feedback. Continued on pg. 7

Circle of FriendsBy: Kathy Nguyen,

Memory Program Coordinator

On February 11th, 1983,President Ronald Reagan of theUnited States stated that this daywould be National Inventors Day.It was in commemoration ofThomas Alva Edison, one of thegreatest inventors in U.S. history, who was born on this date in1847 in Milan, Ohio. Edison wasnotably best known for inventingthe light bulb, and even heldthousands of other patents. Thisholiday also honors all inventors, recognizing the great impactinventions have on advancementsin technology and theproductiveness of societyworldwide. Circle of Friends willhave the opportunity to talk aboutsome of the inventions and thosewho created them. They will alsovisit the Tech Museum ofInnovation to explore some of thedifferent galleries such as theExploratory Gallery, SocialRobots, Silicon Valley InnovationGallery, and much more. There isa great appreciation for what thesecreative ideas and innovationshave provided for others, and howlives have been improved. To thisday many more ideas are beingdeveloped to enhance and enrichour lives.

Eat Red WithHeart Health

It’s time to amend that “apple aday” aphorism. Tomatoes andcranberries keep the doctor away, too. New research shows thatincorporating these 3 red, roundfruits into your daily diet canreduce your risk of heart diseaseby as much as 40 percent. A hearthealthy diet is always the first stepin treating high cholesterol orhigh blood pressure. Fortunately, the antioxidant-rich fruits (apples, tomatoes, cranberries) are as tastyas they are healthy.

TOMATOES A new study byTufts University in Boston showedthat eating lycopene-rich foodssuch as tomatoes more than 5x aweek over an 11-year periodreduced coronary disease risk by26%.

APPLES An apple a day canreduce LDL (bad cholesterol) byas much as 40%, according to anew, small Ohio State University

study. Be sure to munch on thefruit, rather than drink juice; thepeels house the most antioxidant.

CRANBERRIES Drinking 3 cupsof cranberry juice daily can raiseHDL (good) cholesterol levels by10% and reduce heart disease by40%, a study at the University ofScranton in Pennsylvania showed.Plus, this juice decreaseddiet-caused atherosclerosis(clogging of the arteries) bypreventing plaque from forming.

GO, GO, RED!
