Health

Nerissa’s Notes:It is the most wonderful time of

the year. However, unfortunately, this is not true for everyone. In

fact, one survey in North Americarevealed that 45% of people donot look forward to this festive

season. December can beparticularly difficult, especially forthose who are dealing with stress,

unrealistic expectations,loneliness, family conflict, and

loss. Seasonal Affective Disorder isa type of depression that is relatedto changes in the seasons, which

most often occurs during the darkand cold winter months that can

affect circadian rhythm. Some symptoms related to

holiday depression may includefeeling hopeless or worthless, losing interest in once enjoyedactivities, low energy, difficulty

concentrating, changes in appetiteor weight, and problems with

with sleeping. Fortunately, thereare some ways to avoid potentialrisk factors and feel better aroundthe holiday season. It is important

to be mindful of what you arethankful for, not to hope for

perfection, be present and enjoythe moments, take action, andparticipate in things you enjoy.

Also, becoming involved incharities or giving back in

non-monetary ways can not onlyhelp those less fortunate, it has

been proved to make youfeel happier.

Although this season can bedifficult for some people, it is

important to reach out to thosewho are depressed. However, if

depression is serious, it isimportant to seek out help froma qualified health professional.

Remember, the holiday season isa time to engage in love, kindness,

generosity, and gratitude forothers in your life.
