I am featuring a mother and son dynamic duo: the Faust Family, aka The Faust Family Singers. Gina Faust was born in San Pedro, California. She attended and graduated from Humber College in Ontario, Canada, with a certification in Group Exercise Leadership. She has a national certification through the AFFA and ACE in fitness and group training. She has been married to John for 34 years. Gina has a daughter, who married this past summer, and a son, Jim, pictured here with her. Gina has worked as a rehab tech, but works as an Activity Assistant in the Neighborhood and Circle of Friends, as well as a concierge here at Belmont Village. Gina plays piano and loves to dance. She loves our seniors and appreciates being part of their lives. Gina recognizes that it can be a scary step when moving to a new home, Belmont Village. She is happy to be part of their journey as they meet new friends and try new activities. Jim, who was our employee of the month for January, is 24 years old. If you have not actually met him, you may have heard him singing with our residents in the hallways on their way to meals or activities. When Jim was a baby, he would hum the “jingles” that would come on commercials. He has sung in choirs and performed in musicals. He is on the board of directors of Up and Coming Theatre. Last fall he directed Jesus Christ Superstar—a huge commitment but a labor of love. Jim’s favorite musicals include Next to Norma, Les Miserables, and Miss Saigon. Previously Jim had worked at another senior community as a server. He developed a philosophy when caring for seniors: always demonstrate patience, humility and kindness. Jim is tall so when engaging our residents in conversation, he can be seen kneeling and making eye contact so our residents are comfortable. (Front cover story is continued on page 6.)

Circle of FriendsThis group of ladies from the

Circle of Friends greatly enjoyedgoing out during the holidayseason to see the holiday lightsand decorations on Cuneo Drive.They went after dinner oneevening, sang carols on the van,and had a wonderful time. Wecontinue to offer two standingoutings per week for the Circle ofFriends groups. These include alunch bunch outing on Mondaysand a scenic drive opportunity onSaturday mornings.

Neighborhood NewsThe Neighborhood recently

held its annual holiday party,during which we offered a lunchbuffet meal and holidayentertainment. We had a numberof families and friends come by tohelp make this event a success.Here, you see two of our residents,Minnie and Gene, with theirfamilies.

Jimmy Faust

January Employee of the MonthJimmy Faust is our January Employee of the

Month! He is a Driver and Concierge as well asan Activity Assistant here at Belmont Village. Heis recognized for his tender love and care heshares with the residents. Jimmy was nominatedby another co-worker in another departmentwho observed him making residents happy,singing to them, and engaging them in upbeatconversation. “The residents’ faces light upwhen he is around!” A BIG congratulationsto Jimmy!

Heart AttackWarning Signs

Some heart attacks are suddenand intense—the “movie heartattacks,” where no one doubtswhat’s happening. But most heartattacks start slowly, with mildpain or discomfort. Often peopleaffected aren’t sure what’s wrongand wait too long before gettinghelp. Here are signs that can meana heart attack is happening.CHEST DISCOMFORT – Mostheart attacks involve discomfort inthe center of the chest that lastsmore than a few minutes, or thatgoes away and comes back. It canfeel like uncomfortable pressure,squeezing, fullness or pain.DISCOMFORT IN OTHER AREASOF THE UPPER BODY -Symptoms can include pain ordiscomfort in one or both arms,the back, neck, jaw or stomach.SHORTNESS OF BREATH - withor without chest discomfort.OTHER SIGNS - May includebreaking out in a cold sweat,nausea or lightheadedness. Aswith men, women’s mostcommon heart attack symptom ischest pain or discomfort. Happy and Healthy 2014!There was a full house for our

New Year’s Eve Party! We enjoyeddelicious appetizers, champagne,and even a symbolic piece ofchocolate to ring in a “sweet”year! After we learned about someNew Year history, answered someNew Year trivia, and shared somefun resolution poems and quotes,the gold Belmont Ball began todrop: "10, 9, 8 ... Happy NewYear!” Our group made lots ofnoise with their noisemakers. Wethen wished everyone a healthyNew Year. We were fortunate tohave Alex Talbott entertain us andend the festivities.
