Congratulations again to Seong Tay For being awarded an FCC/AOC/OSNSW for his wonderful plant of Paphiopedilum micranthum var. eburneum ‘TOM # 4’ This plant received 86.5 points which gives him the highest award possible, a First Class Certificate. We are fortunate to see such top quality orchid plants in flower at our monthly meetings.

Calanthe Orchids a delightful terrestrial orchid Calanthe orchids are cool growing terrestrials with small crowded pseudobulbs with thick roots and corrugated or wrinkled leaves. There are about 220 species of Calanthe orchids, Australia’s own, Calanthe triplicata (Christmas Orchid) is found in Australia from north -eastern Queensland to south-eastern New South Wales where it grows in shady locations in forests, particularly rainforest, usually in humus-rich locations where forest litter accumulates such as occurs on slopes among rocks or on rotting logs or stumps from the coast up into the tablelands. Calanthe species are found in all tropical areas, but mostly concentrated in Southeast Asia. Some species also range into subtropical and tropical lands such as China, India, Central, America, the West Indies and various islands of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Calanthe Orchid Culture Calanthe should be grown in semi shade for best results. As a general rule they do require a rich soil. A mix of grit, peat, rotting organic Cal. Kozu John Chang material, and soil is ideal for these plants, Place them in a spot with

dappled shade and water moderately. You want soil that retains moisture slightly (the peat should do this), but you want your container to drain extremely well to prevent root rot. Courtesy John Chang
