P&C Annual General MeetingWE NEED YOU! Our P&C AGM is this Tuesday, 19 November. The meeting will be held in the Library at 7pm. On the agenda is our school’s NAPLAN results, the bottom playground and class structures for 2014. Please come along so you can be well informed about what is happening to our school in 2014.
Maths at homeKids’ early experiences with measurement are often based on watching their parents. Seeing mum or dad measure and pour ingredients for a recipe or weigh items at the fruit shop will often become part of their play. Art and Craft Room updateThe focus of our Creative Arts program in 2014 is Art. We are currently refurbishing the room with the help of the P&C and the YMCA. We have recently had the ceiling replaced and painted; however, we need assistance in painting the walls. Can you help? We are looking for three or four people who can lend their assistance for a couple of hours to paint the walls. We are hoping to paint on either Thursday or Friday. If you can help, please contact the front office or send us an email.
Student achievementGaby J (5W) recently took part in the Medibank Junior Development Series (MJDS) Tennis. Gabby earned a place in the series after the Champion of Champions which was held in Sydney for the State Finals. Twenty four girls from around the state took part. Gaby convincingly won her pool, defeating all 5 opponents. She won her quarter final 6-2 to progress into the semi finals. Gabby won her semi-final in a tie break. Unfortunately due to inclement weather the final, which we supposed to be held on 11 November, had to be abandoned. Definitely a star in the making. Well done Gabby!
Captains visit to Parliament HouseRecently our school captains, Wil and Lauren, had the opportunity to visit Parliament House and meet our local member Hon Rob Stokes. Here is their report:
Last Friday, together with all the other captains from Pittwater, we went to the NSW Parliament House. We had morning tea with the Hon Rob Stokes in the Speakers Garden and we were then shown the Lower House, or Legislative Assembly, which is where the Hon Rob Stokes works. In here we were given some facts from Mr Stokes and then presented with certificates and a package about the Legislative Assembly.
Date for your diaryA reminder that the Year 3-6 music concert is in Week 10: Wednesday, 11 December at 7.00pm and Thursday, 12 December at 10am. We hope to see all the Year 3-6 parents there.

DOING MATHS IN YOUR HEAD!Students are encouraged to use a range of different mental strategies to add and subtract numbers in our mathematics lessons. These are often quite different to the way we were taught to think about numbers at school!
Developing good number sense (an understanding of number relationships and how to use them) assists students to work out and retain number facts more efficiently because it makes sense! It also improves accuracy as students are aware of any discrepancies; they are not just reliant on rote learning or what the calculator (or phone) tells them.
We have attached an information sheet to help you understand some of the early strategies and their associated language. This is not meant as a checklist for home; students are ready for different strategies at different times.
If you would like to download this information sheet, and others like it, go to the School A to Z website:

STEWART HOUSE/BUSHFIRES CHRISTMAS DRIVEFor the last 16 years, Wiseberry Real Estate Mona Vale has been coordinating a Christmas Gift Drive to support the Smith Family. This year however, Stewart House and the Bushfire victims will be the recipients of their annual Christmas appeal.
Many of the schools in the PCS are supporting this event as Stewart House is the Department of Education and Community’s designated charity and is universally supported by DEC schools. In response to the recent devastating bushfires, Wiseberry will also be distributing gifts to the bushfire victims.
From this week Monday, 18th November, 2013 (Week 7) until Thursday, 28th November, 2013 (Week 8) inclusive, students are requested to bring a gift to school to support the Wiseberry’s Stewart House/Bushfire Christmas Appeal. Each gift must be new i.e. unopened and unused, and placed in a gift bag. Please do not wrap the gift in paper as each gift will be individually checked before distribution. Each class will be given a class box for the individual gifts to be stored. The SRC class representatives will coordinate their class’s efforts.
Christmas is a time of joy for some but a time of sadness and loneliness for others. We believe this is a wonderful opportunity to be involved in a collective effort to support those less fortunate in our broader community. Hopefully this gesture will reinforce to our students that Christmas is a time of giving not just receiving!
EHPS CHRISTMAS COLOURS MUFTI DAYThe culmination of the Stewart House/Bushfire Victims Christmas Gift Appeal will be a ‘Christmas Colours Mufti Day’ on the last day of the appeal. On Thursday, 28th November, 2013 (Week 8), the students will be resplendent in colours of red, green, gold and silver and all things ‘Christmassy’!
There will be no gold coin collection as is the usual practice on Mufti Days - the Christmas gift is the donation.
A representative from Wiseberry’s Real Estate will collect the gifts and distribute these on our behalf.
In anticipation of your support,
Ms Vicki Bosler and SRC

dent 2014 Band Program
Late last week we sent email 2 of 3 to all Year 2 and 3 parents who provided details, and parents from other years who provided their details, to introduce the 2014 Band program. The third email is due out this week.
A few things:
• We are only communicating detailed information to parents by email
• No printed notes will be sent home
• If you are interested in the Band program and did not receive an email, please email me at [email protected] with your name, your child’s name, class number and year and we will add you to our current blitzkrieg
• Depending on the program, students currently in Years K to 5 and next year’s Year K, qualify for Band entry.
World PremiereThe Junior Band is on schedule to perform publicly for the first time at the K-2 Assembly on Monday, 25 November.
Please ensure your child is practicing the School Song (Beethoven’s Ninth with Bars 21, 22,23 and 24 blocked out; these bars are drum solo, would love to see the K-2s sing along to that!), Power Rock and The Spook. This will be a big day in their short musical lives and stepping stone to bigger and better things. Parents are most welcome to attend the performance.
GuitarsJose asks that all guitar students practice with a little more commitment. He is of the opinion that the group is not progressing as it should due to lack of practice.
The competency and progress of all musicians in the Band program will be on display at Gala Night and the Christmas Music Festival. We would like every student to be at their best.
Jose recommends sitting in with your strummer and picker, preferably with a glass of your favourite beverage, and enjoy the experience.
Important DatesBand Gala Night commences at 7pm on Thursday, 12 December in the Hall. All musicians in all band activities will perform. This is a night of musical magnificence and cannot be missed. It even has free entry, how good is that! All parents and school students are welcome to attend and it is great night for next year’s band students to see what they will achieve in a year or two.
The night formerly known as Carols Night is still on, wait for it, Friday, 13 December, worryingly freaky. This event is planned to be even huger than last year (impossible is still the rallying call), but it’s true. So true in fact, and huge (massive), it’s been renamed the Christmas Music Festival. All the Bands will play, not just carols but some of their scorching red hot numbers too, the strings and guitars will serenade, the school choirs will mesmerise with their polished and dulcet tones and, as a special treat, we will hear some of our amazingly talented tutors play some exceptional music. All this on the village green that is the middle oval.
