The Affordable Care Act: What You Need to Know Obamacare can provide health care coverage at low or no premi-ums for many individuals who lack health insurance. On October 1, 2013, the new insurance marketplaces under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

(also known as the ACA or Obamacare) were opened. Summit Medical Group is participating in New Jersey insurance plans aligned with the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

Three New Jersey health care insurers offer plans aligned with the ACA (Obamacare):

amerIHealtH• Summit Medical Group participates in all AmeriHealth

plans offered through the Affordable Care Act market-place/exchange with the exception of the AmeriHealth Local Value plans.

• Summit Medical Group does not participate in Local Value or Value Network plans.

• AmeriHealth’s website is www.amerihealth.com.

HorIzoN Blue cross aNd Blue sHIeld of New Jersey• Summit Medical Group providers participate in Horizon

Advantage EPO plan• Our providers do not participate in the Horizon Advance EPO. • Horizon’s website is www.horizonblue.com.

HealtH repuBlIc INsuraNce of New Jersey• Summit Medical Group is in-network for Health Republic

Insurance of New Jersey (www.healthrepublic.us). If you plan to purchase health insurance through the New Jersey marketplace, there are a few things you should consider. Your annual health care costs are made up of two main categories:• Your monthly premiums, typically deducted from your

paycheck or from your monthly Social Security income• Any other out-of-pocket expenses you have to pay during

the year. These expenses include copayments, coinsurance, deductibles, and any costs not covered by your insurance plan.

Typically, health insurance plans with low monthly premiums have significant out-of-pocket expenses. Comparatively, plans with high monthly premiums have lower out-of-pocket expenses.

Understanding how you typically use health care services will help you pick the best plan to meet your budget and health care needs. Are you a healthy person who rarely visits a doctor or medical facility? If so, you may decide to pick a plan with a low monthly premium.

On the other hand, do you have dependents who need medical services throughout the year? Or do you have a condition that requires regular monthly doctor visits and prescription medications? In this case, you may consider a plan with higher monthly premiums to better budget your health care expenses.

“Summit Medical Group strives to improve the quality of life in our communities by being an agent of change.” — Steven Kaye, president

and a founder of the foundation

New Foundation Advances Health and Well-Being

Physicians and staff members at Summit Medical Group have long been known for

advancing the health and well-being of the greater community.

Now, that commitment is moving a big step further with the creation of the Summit Medical Group Foundation.

The Summit Medical Group Foundation and the Enright Melanoma Foundation cosponsored a Celebrity Golf Outing at Hamilton Farms Golf Club in Gladstone. The event raised more than $100,000 to support the missions of both the newly formed Summit Medical Group Foundation and the Enright Melanoma Foundation. From left to right are Rick Cerrone (New York Yankees), Steven Kaye (President, SMG Foundation), Jeffrey LeBenger (Chair, SMG Foundation), Ken Daneyko (New Jersey Devils), Rachel Jordan (Miss New Jersey US International), Gerry Cooney (heavyweight boxer), Ken Dashow (104.3 personality), and Bruce Harper (New York Jets).

Enriching the lives of community members through health promotion, clinical research, and medical education is the goal of the new foundation, a pending nonprofit 501(c)(3) public foundation.

“Fantastic advances are being made in medical research that will have a dramatic impact on lengthening and improving our quality of life,” says Steven Kaye, president and a founder of the foundation.

TO HELP OR LEARN MORE, visit the foundation's website, www.smg-foundation.org.

“The foundation can drive some of these advances, and its broad mandate gives it flexibility to target areas where it can have the greatest impact,” he adds.

“The physicians and staff of Summit Medical Group have been involved in medically related charitable activities for decades—the foundation puts an umbrella over these activities,” explains Lisa Hackett, executive director of the foundation. Summit Medical Group is the largest private physi-cian group in the state.

Summit Medical Group has been honored many times for its role in the communities it serves, including recognition as a New Jersey Business & Industry Association Good Neighbor, an NJBiz Corporate Citizen of the Year, and the Communitas Leadership Award of the Association of Marketing and Communi-cation Professionals. In addition, the Group has offered its resources to medical missions abroad and to state and community-based organizations.

The Celebrity Golf Invitational in late September was one of the foundation’s first events. It was cosponsored with the Enright Melanoma Foundation, which Summit Medical Group has supported for more than 10 years.

Community participation will be key to the foundation’s success, according to Kaye, and he encourages patients and friends of Summit Medical Group to become involved in the organization’s fund-raising events, and to, “donate, donate, donate.”

“Summit Medical Group strives to improve the quality of life in our communities by being an agent of change,” Kaye says. “The foundation’s team of physician specialists, charitable foundation specialists, and dedicated volunteers has the expertise and passion to drive a broad range of important initiatives. We hope you’ll join us.”

Would you like to do your part to advance medical science? Two research studies are now under way at Summit Medical Group.

tarGetING caNcerThe last few decades have brought an increased focus on developing a targeted approach to treat cancer.

osteoporosIs optIoNsIf you’ve considered other options for your ongoing osteoporosis care, you may be interested in learning more about a clinical research study for osteoporosis. People who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis are invited to learn more about a clinical trial taking place. If you have a child or adolescent, you know that pressures associated with growing up influence how your child thinks, acts, and feels. In some cases, kids are overwhelmed with the many social and emotional issues they face.

The good news is that cognitive behavioral therapy is a proven coun-seling approach to help kids navigate the natural and sometimes confusing social and emotional complications of life and growing up.

Learning cognitive behavioral techniques can help children and adolescents adopt practical, effective lifelong tools to help manage day-to-day stresses as

well as emotions such as sadness, anger, and fear, among others.

Individuals, families, or groups facing these challenges can benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy:• Anxiety, including episodic

anxiety, generalized anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias

• Depression and other mood disorders

• Obsessive compulsive disorders• Problematic angerSigns that your child might benefit from therapy include changes in attention at school and changes in grades, excessive crying, and lack of interest in activities, hobbies, and friendships.

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU. To f ind out more or to schedule an appointment, call the Summit Medical Group Behavioral Health and Cognit ive Therapy Center at 908-277-8900.

Is Lung Cancer Screening Right for You?

SMG is now offering lung cancer screening to promote early detection of lung cancer for those at high risk.

People at high risk include:• Smokers or former smokers ages 55 to 74• Those still smoking or who quit smoking

within the past 15 years• Those with a history of 30 or more “pack

years” (number of cigarettes smoked per day multiplied by number of years smoked)

Low-dose CT scan without contrast is endorsed by the American Lung Association. CT scans are done once a year for three consecutive years. The cost is not covered by insurance. SMG is charging $199. See your SMG primary care physician or pulmonologist to discuss the test.

If you have questions, contact your doctor or the SMG Pulmonary Department at 908-277-8674 or check online at www.lung.org/lung-disease/lung-cancer/lung-cancer-screening-guidelines.

Are These Exercise Myths Slowing You Down? You know you should move for 30 minutes each day. Or is that 60? And shouldn’t you be lifting weights and stretching, too? But when? Separate the myths from the facts to move yourself toward better health.

Myth: Everyone needs at least 30 uninterrupted minutes of exercise every day. Fact: An average adult should get 30 minutes of moderate exercise

every day. But go ahead and divide your exercise into shorter stints. A study in the Journal of Hypertension found that four 10-minute walks each day beat one 40-minute walk in reducing borderline high blood pressure. Kids should be active for at least 60 minutes a day.

Myth: I’d better see my doctor before starting an exercise program.

Fact: If you’re younger than age 35 and healthy, just get moving. But do check with a doctor first if you’re older than 35, have been a longtime couch potato, or have high blood pressure, frequent dizzy spells, breathlessness, or other health problems.

Myth: I should lift weights every day.Fact: It’s better to avoid exercising the same muscle groups two

days in a row. So do strength or resistance exercises, such as weight lifting, just two or three days each week for about 20 minutes at a time. Shop at a sports store for a resistance band

or inexpensive hand and ankle weights. Or use the machines at a health club or community center.

Myth: I should always stretch before exercising.Fact: Stretch safely after performing aerobic or strength exercises,

when your muscles are warm.

If you suffer from urinary incontinence—the loss of bladder control or urinary leakage—you’re not alone.

The condition affects mil-lions of men and women but is twice as common in women.

Many things can cause urinary incontinence, such as pregnancy, childbirth, meno- pause, constipation, and diabetes. Some people stop going to the gym, to social events, or even to work be-cause of incontinence. Special pads are often needed to absorb leakage.

Treatment often begins with Kegel exercises. These special exercises help strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, which help close the urethra. Surgical options are also available.

Now, doctors at Summit Medical Group have a new, surgery-free option for women who have not had success with other approaches.

Called InTone, the at-home treatment combines pelvic floor training exercises used by therapists with gentle muscle stimulation to ensure

success. Voice commands guide users through the entire 12-minute session, designed to be done once a day.

InTone works by calming spasms of the bladder muscle using gentle stimulation of the bladder muscle. It is effective in treating different types of incontinence. Women often see major improvement—including an end to urine leakage—within several weeks.

Women using this treatment purchase the equipment. Insur-ance coverage may include InTone. If not, the cost is $595.

InTone offers flexibility for women whose schedules are too busy for frequent therapy sessions in a doctor’s office.
