DIM, DULL,& UNINTERESTING An old Peanuts cartoon shows
Charlie Brown, Lucy, and Schroeder lying on their backs looking up at the clouds. Schroeder thinks he sees the likeness of Beethoven, conducting his fifth symphony in the clouds. Lucy sees George Washington, leading his men across the Delaware. “And what do you see, Charlie Brown?” they ask. Charlie Brown answers, “I was gonna say a ducky and a horsy.”
Popular culture likes to portray Christians as Charlie Browns – dim, dull, uninteresting. In most movies Christians are portrayed as trouble-makers because we just don’t understand things or see things the way other, more enlightened people see them. It’s easy to feel ordinary, intimidated, inferior, stupid, ugly and out of fashion when we don’t “fit in.” Swimming upstream or walking the “straight and narrow” has never been easy.
But look at how God sees us: “How great is the love the Father has
lavished on us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it does not know Him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is” (1 John 3:1-2).
What a privilege and honor it is to be sons and daughters of God, with full rights of inheritance. God’s love transforms people. In His Kingdom worldly perspectives don’t matter much. Someday we will stand side by side with Jesus and look God in the face as He says, “Well done good and faithful servant.”
Now that’s not too dull is it? Charles North, Abilene, TX

LET JESUS CARRY THE LOAD
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 If you haven’t learned already, Christianity can be a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows. Sometimes we will be on top and things will be going good for us. At other times we could be in a rough spot maybe from a death in the family or temptations may just seem too much to handle. Everyone will struggle at some point in their life, but Jesus says when we get weary He can provide rest for us. It is so easy to forget sometimes that Jesus is walking right there beside us and if we lean on Him, He can carry the heavy load for us. As humans we want to do things on our own and try and feel that we did things by ourselves. That may be the case for a few small things but we can easily become overwhelmed. Jesus will be there for us if we choose to lean on Him. We should also never forget that when times seem like they are easy and we are on top of our “rollercoaster” ride that we should praise God for that as well and still look for His guidance. HUMBLED I like to think of myself as a pretty good fisherman. I have been fishing with my dad
since I was about 3 years old. When I was growing up, I didn’t know there was anything else
to do on a Saturday except to get up before daylight and fish until late into the afternoon. But
when J.E. Casey asked me if I wanted to go fishing with him last Thursday, I knew I was
going to have to bring my “A” game. Don’t let any fisherman tell you that they don’t keep
track of how many they catch. Don’t let them tell you that they don’t want to catch more than
the person they are fishing with!
When we got to J.E.’s fishing spot about 5:30 last Thursday morning, it didn’t take
any time for him to start reeling in fish. I bet he had me down 10 nothing before I ever even
got a good hit. I wasn’t too surprised though, because I was fishing a new spot and really
fishing in a different way than I’m used to fishing. But with the help of J.E. and some of the
other guys up at the dock, I was able to catch quite a few before the morning was over. But I
wasn’t able to catch as many as J.E. did! To add insult to injury, my dad humbled me on
Friday morning by catching far more than I did, even though we were fishing in my boat!
It is good to be humbled at times. We live in a world that is full of pride. We have
pride in our possessions. Many have pride in their homes. Many have pride in their jobs. But
many times we fail to remember that the things we have pride in can be taken away from us in
a moment’s notice. Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 10:17,”But,’Let him who boasts boast in the
Lord.’”
I have been humbled many times through the years but the thing that humbles me most
is the thought of Jesus Christ coming to this world and facing pain and humiliation of the cross
for my sins. This week, I challenge you to take some time to read through the crucifixion
accounts and see if you can read them without being humbled. Jesus was willing to come and
pay the ultimate price for our sins. I can’t think of anything else that is more humbling than
that!
