Shades of Grace Our
New United Methodist Congregation
On August 3rd, Rev. Will Shewey gathered along with 80 other people venturing to begin a new church. This was not the
official first service of the new church, but a beginning of gathering people each Sunday at 4 pm to worship, pray, develop
church leadership, form small groups, take up offerings, and begin the work of launching a new church which they
officially named Shades of Grace. A big shout out goes to Mafair United Methodist Church who is allowing them to use
their Fellowship Hall along with classrooms for children’s ministry and small group learning. Also, thank you to St. Luke
United Methodist Church for allowing the group to meet there on August 24th due to a funeral at Mafair. The connection
of the UMC at its best! In the near future, they are looking at leasing a store front space and having an official church
launch with the DNA of reaching the least, the last, the lost, and Will Shewey has added the lonely. 130 people have
come together over the last month seeking to be a part of our newest UMC congregation, Shades of Grace. We look
forward to the official launch and eventual chartering of this church. Keep them in your prayers.
First Six Months of 2014
We give thanks in the first six months of 2014 that 21 churches experienced growth in worship over 2013. Many exciting
things are happening and professions of faith are taking place all over the District. However as a District, worship is
down 5%, Sunday school is down 10% and 29 of our 58 churches having not had a profession of faith thus far in 2014
through June. This should cause us to lose sleep at night and have many
conversations of what God is calling us to do.
As my colleague and friend, Richard McKee, shared with me recently, we need to read Acts Chapter 2 in looking at the
early church that they devoted themselves to scriptural teaching, fellowship with others of telling the story of what God
was doing in their lives, worshipping together along with remembering what Jesus did on our behalf in taking Holy
Communion, and giving of themselves to others. We read in Acts 2:47 that each day
the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.
Friends, when are we going to get serious about this?? I know that I need to refocus my priorities around these thoughts.
It is so easy to get distracted and drawn into many things that consume us. Let’s convent to pray,
read, worship, give and tell our story.
I look forward to sharing worship with you at our District Conference on September 28th at 3 pm, at Ketron Memorial
UMC. There is a special time of worship planned, and I will share around, “What Will Be Your Ebenezer Moment?” I
invite everyone in the District to come be with us.
In Christ, David

THE FUTURE OF BUFFALO MOUNTAIN UPDATE
INFORMATIONAL SESSION:
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9
6:30 PM
CROSSROADS UMC
EVERYONE IS INVITED TO ATTEND!
Over the past 2 years, the Buffalo Mountain Camp Board has evaluated options for continuing our camping
ministry at the current site. The Board hosted listening sessions in Kingsport and Johnson City, authorized a
variety of engineering evaluations, and hired Kaleidoscope, Inc. to assess and advise on the best way forward.
Recently, based upon these sessions, topographical studies, and the reports from Kaleidoscope, the camp Board
voted unanimously to re-establish our camping ministry at a new site, and purchased an option on 80 acres of
camping property bordering Bays Mountain Park in Kingsport, Tennessee. But choosing to build a regional
camp in Kingsport will require the sale of the current site.
As the final decision affecting Buffalo Mountain Camp resides with the Johnson City and Kingsport Districts,
BMC wants to ensure that folks have all the information needed for this important decision. Therefore, the
Buffalo Mountain Camp Board will host 2 information sessions on the future of our camping ministry. Please
announce and invite your congregations to attend either session: Monday, September 8 at 7:00 pm at
Cherokee United Methodist Church, 2615 S Roan St, Johnson City, TN, or Tuesday, September 9 at 6:30 pm
at Crossroads United Methodist Church, 200 Bays Cove Trail, Kingsport, TN. The Board will be present to
share information and to address questions and concerns as we all work to offer a life-changing camping
ministry in the glory of God’s creation once again.

NEW DISTRICT WEBSITE – TRY IT OUT! http://kingsportdistrictumc.com
AIMING TO EQUIP CHURCHES TO ENGAGE THEIR COMMUNITIES;
THE KINGSPORT DISTRICT OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH LAUNCHES A NEW
INTERACTIVE WEBSITE
KINGSPORT, August 20, 2014. The Kingsport District of the United Methodist Church is pleased to
announce the launch of the beginning of a new era in ministry throughout the Tri-Cities with the launch of their
new website, http://kingsportdistrictumc.com. Working in cooperation with Burning Bush Web Design
(www.burningbushdesign.com), they’ve created this website with hopes of equipping their 58 congregations to
connect to the communities of Kingsport, Bristol, and Johnson City.
While many church websites are just that, church websites, the Kingsport District website is designed with their
mission to empower congregations, reach the marginalized, make disciples, and transform lives by simply
connecting the Body of Christ. Web developer Michael Smith explains, “When David (Graves) and the District
Transformational Team approached us to develop their new website, I was excited because I knew that David
and his team had a long-term vision for the district. Because of that vision I knew we could really accomplish
creating something that had a greater purpose behind it. We forget in the church sometimes that people outside
of our churches do not know what we are really about. There are dissenting opinions of the church everywhere
in our culture. We have to take off the superficial and be authentic and transparent in our message to show
people that there are Christians who want to be like Jesus. Christians that want to make a difference and change
lives.”
To accomplish this objective, Burning Bush Web Design created a comprehensive plan based on the District’s
long-term strategic plan (http://kingsportdistrictumc.com/transform/strategic-plan/) including a state-of-the-art,
custom website built on HTML5 and CSS3 technologies with a focus on a clean and robust framework that
integrates with social media which encourages sharing of content. Additionally, care was taken to ensure the
design was mobile responsive, which means the website is friendly to smartphones and tablets.
“The website is simply one part of the overall strategy”, Smith explains. “We’re working with the district to
help create a new Communications Team which will provide the sort of ongoing rich content and community
engagement that will be needed to share our message and equip the district’s churches.”
For questions, contact Michael Smith at [email protected] or 855-691-4625
Editor's Notes: Attached to this email is a graphic of the new website for your use as well as a .pdf copy

KINGSPORT DISTRICT MINISTRIES
South Sudan Partnership with the Giru Community
Friends and Neighbors
Get Real Ministry
The church treasurer should send these monies in to the Holston Conference Office to
receive credit on their 5 Star status. Go to Conference Initiated Specials & record
appropriately. Record one of the following:
Kingsport District Advance Special #1 – Friends & Neighbors
Kingsport District Advance Special #2 – Get Real
Kingsport District Advance Special #3 –
Sudan Partnership
We finally were able to visit Giru UMC and Pastor John Kenyi. The road has become very difficult and is
impossible when it rains very much. We were blessed with three days of no rain.
I am attaching a photo of the parsonage under construction. It is scheduled to be completed in about three
weeks, weather permitting. It is very hard to send photos from here, so I will save most for you when I return.
The church is doing well and school is as well. I have photos of the current thatch roof classrooms which give
cause to the need for school blocks. Pastor John sends his appreciation to Kingsport District for the partnership
with Giru. Skip, he and his wife Roda, and five children are very appreciative of the parsonage that will enable
him to reside in the community he serves.
The team is doing well and has had a great opportunity to achieve the goals of the trip.
Blessings to All,
Danny Howe

Have you ever needed a place to do your laundry or take a shower in a place that is safe and economical? It is a
place that empowers women through love, laughter, and laundry. The Oasis in Kingsport is just that very place.
What might it look like to be in ministry with or share in a day at the Oasis – read below:
When a new guest arrives at the Oasis to do laundry, they are greeted by smiling faces, warm hearts and a brand
new laundry bag! Many of the ladies carry their laundry in plastic bags or broken baskets so we supply a fresh
laundry bag to carry their clean laundry home. We have had so many guests that we have run out of laundry
bags! Someone once told me "What I make with my hands, I give with my heart". Thank you to all the sewers
who donated laundry bags, everyone loves them! We are in need of more bags. If you would like to donate, we
would love to have them!
For more information, please call -
The Oasis office at 392-1137 - Dianne Scott, Executive Director

DISTRICT YOUTH NEWS UPDATE Mark and I would like to thank everyone that joined us at the 1st Annual District
Youth Camping event. God was true and faithful to his promises by providing mostly
clear weather over Warrior's Path State Park all weekend. We were a little concerned
about how the rain would impact the concerts. God is good though and provided an
indoor solution. We'd like to thank Doug Hallock of Get Real Ministries for inviting us to Colonial Heights
UMC Friday night and loaning us his equipment all weekend for the concerts. We'd also like to thank Colonial
Heights UMC for allowing us to use their gym not only Friday night but Saturday night also. The youth were
able to have an awesome worship experience led by Compassion International musical artist Tyrus Morgan. If
you didn't attend the concert you not only missed a fantastic time of praise and worship music, but also moving
messages by our D.S. David Graves.
From all accounts the youth had a really good time. We had about 6 churches participating in some form or
fashion. The after concert campfires helped get the young folks to open up and have their own mini worship
services. We like to go on late night hikes and this trip was no exceptions. We went hiking Saturday night with
36 people. We finished the hike with the same number of people with which we started. That was no small
feat! We hope you can join us next year.
Next youth event:
Festival of Gifts and Talent
October 19 at Crossroads UMC from 5-7pm. Youth groups wishing to audition for the youth talent time during Resurrection should prepare their skits,
dramas, songs, etc. for the Festival of Gifts and Talents event.
Who will represent the Kingsport district in 2015? Will it be you? Hope to see you there!
