A fter nineteen years serving abused children, there is no one in the Alliance For Children (AFC ) partnership that thinks child abuse is an easy issue to address. Thirty-four thousand children have entered our doors since August, 1992 for first time investigative services. Seventy percent of them are victims of child sexual abuse. More than ninety-seven percent of the children and their families knew and trusted their abuser.

Listen. Understand. Act.

The National Institute of Justice tells us that on average it costs Tarrant County and the State of Texas over $14,000 per child victim to complete a comprehensive and solid investigation. During the nineteen years that AFC has coordinated investigative services through three child-friendly centers, the cumulative cost to Tarrant County and Texas is $47,600,000, expended on the most egregious child abuse allegations that the Alliance For Children partnership explores. This figure does not include the child forensic interviews, the free case management and group counseling services that AFC provides to children and families each year.

The expense in state and community dollars is enormous, but the cost to children who are robbed of their childhoods and opportunities is beyond such calculations. While Alliance For Children is committedto supporting children’s natural res i l iency though appropr iate services both within Alliance For Children and our Tarrant County community, it has become obvious to us that in addition to helping abused children be safe again, it is equally important to our community that we take important and structured steps to prevent child sexual abuse from ever occurring.

We believe adult education and responsibility is the answer.

In April 2010, AFC brought an initiative to Tarrant County to greatly reduce the number of children put in harm’s way of child sexual abuse. Through a simple, but elegant, and research based curriculum, Stewards of Children

teaches adults how to prevent children from ever being exposed to child sexual abuse. These conversations among adults are c r i t i c a l t o e r a d i c a t i n g e a r l ychildhood experiences that if left untreated, can lead to substance abuse, juvenile crime and a lifetime of missed opportunities.

Our goal is to educate 5% of the adult Tarrant County population on how to prevent child sexual abuse from ever occurring. If we reach the tipping point of 70,000 adults, we expect to

see a reduct ion of sexual ly abused ch i ld ren in our communi ty . A l l iance Fo r Ch i ld ren i s not a lone in th i s in i t ia t i ve . We are lead ing a coa l i t ion o f o ther nonprof i t agenc ies , independent schoo l d i s t r ic t s , bus ines ses , fa i th based o rgan i zat ions and l i ke minded ind iv idua l s .

“The expense in state andcommunity dollars is

enormous, but the cost tochildren who are robbedof their childhoods andopportunities is beyond

such calculations.”

Your help and support is critical to our success in this initiative. Please visit our website at www.a l l iance f orchi ldren.org to learn more. Your commitment is critical to the children you love and the children you know, but do not know the abuse they suffer.

We thank you for your support and commitment to the children of our community.

Healing ServicesAlliance For Children provides in-depth services to confirmed child abuse victims and their protective caregivers immediately to begin the healing process. Any type of abuse can be traumatic for a child. It is not unusual for a child to experience nightmares, flashbacks, sad moods, anxiety, anger, failing grades, fearfulness, and thoughts of drug/alcohol use & self-harm after a traumatic event has occurred. Although these are normal reactions to abuse, it is important for children to learn healthy ways of coping in order to decrease these symptoms. With the support of a protective caregiver and effective treatment, a child can recover without long-term effects. Services include case management, group and individual counseling, court accompaniment, therapy dog services, etc. All services are available in both Spanish and English.

Every year, community corporations and individuals team up with Alliance For Children to assure that the children needing our investigative and clinical services are also remembered in the seasonal events that are important to childhood.

Last year, community partnerships raised almost $100,000 in cash support and in-kind gifts for these programs.
