Goodness
“God saw that all he had made was very good (Gen. 1: 31).” Creation is not merely good, but “very good.” Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite (“my boy”) taught that beyond anything else God is good. “They call the divine substance itself ‘goodness.’ This essential Good, by the very fact of its existence, extends goodness into all things (Pseudo-Dionysius, The Divine Names, 4.1).” St. Thomas Aquinas, building on St. Augustine, taught that the very fact that something or someone exists signifies that it is good because God does not create evil. It follows then that evil is that which turns itself from the good, from existence and moves toward non-existence. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has taught that each of us is the product of the loving thought of God. Hence, we can say that as the product of the loving thought of God our existence is good, dignified, precious and of ineffable value.
Being, that is existence, precedes the good. Nothing that doesn’t exist can be good, but everything that does exist is good because it is better to have existed, even if only for a short time, than never at all. Only something or someone who exists can be good or bad. Evil is permitted to occur because God gives us free will. If God did not grant us free will we would not be capable of love, we would be like robots programmed to love and obey. Because we are free to choose to love God or not, we are then also responsible/accountable for our free, conscious, intentional choices. “Down the hill fell Jack and Jill and you came tumbling after, 'cause of original sin (Dave Matthews Band, What Would You Say).” We can choose false freedom as Adam did or true freedom in Christ Jesus, the New Adam, and bring an end to the tumbling we all fall into when we follow our own conventions.
Mankind has been given all the glory and dignity of sons and daughters of God. We have the grace of God, the Sacraments and Holy Mother Church to help us to come to know and love God and you cannot love that which you don’t know. Seize the opportunity to make every day a privileged moment for an encounter with God in love. And, be open to letting the Christian community help you to encounter Christ. Help one another in praying with the Word of God in the Scriptures and most especially approaching and understanding the Eucharist, where we encounter Jesus, the New Adam.
