1958Our Lady Queen of Heaven School was established and began classes with 24 students in the Knights of Columbus Building.

1961Monsignor Irving A. DeBlanc was appointed pastor of the parish and it became his mission to grow the school and parish community.

1963 -1964Monsignor DeBlanc invited the ministry of the School Sisters of Notre Dame to assume the role of administrators at OLQH School. The SSND served in the school administration and faculty until 1983. The first principal was Sister Elaine Schaeffler. During this time, Monsignor DeBlanc established a nursery to care for the children of the lay teachers.

1965 – 1970The school grew to nearly 500 students from kindergarten to eighth grade and the nursery grew to a capacity of 50 children.

The school received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1969. At this time, it was the only Catholic elementary school in the state of Louisiana to have such an accreditation.

1970s to PresentOLQH School continued to grow under the direction of principals who worked successfully to enhance the mission and create the best possible faith and learning environment for students.

Our History … Early Beginnings

Building Expansion In 1958, no one could have dreamed of what the OLQH School campus would look like today in its 60th year. But it is certain that there was a vision from the beginning. In the early 1960s, OLQH parish began to acquire land for the church and the school. It is with this land that we have been able to continually expand over the years, ensuring that the students and staff at OLQH School are met with the best facilities for students to grow and learn.

1963 Cafeteria, connected to the original church and surrounding classrooms, which were known as the pavilion.1964 Building Addition: library, administration building and 10 classrooms These buildings are still in use today.1971 The current OLQH church was built. The original church building was converted into a gymnasium and auditorium, still used today and fondly referred to as the “little gym.” 1992 Science Building, which now houses the pre-kindergarten classes1997 The Primary Building housing grades 1 – 31998 The Fine Arts Building & Cafeteria2014 The Msgr. Message from the Principal The past school year was one of celebration as we acknowledged 60 years of Catholic education in our community. Embracing the theme, “Let Your Light Shine” students at Our Lady Queen of Heaven School focused their attention on our wonderful history and the light of Christ that has led the way for the past 60 years. Students learned of about many significant milestones and had the opportunity to meet individuals who were vital to the school’s success and growth over the years, including many past principals. We are forever grateful for those who have faithfully served the Our Lady Queen of Heaven School community. The school we enjoy today is built upon the hard work of so many who have come before us. To our current families and community partners, we thank you for helping us make this such a special anniversary year. You and your families are our future and we appreciate your unwavering dedication to our school. We look forward to our 61st school year this fall. I pray that everyone has a restful summer break and returns to us on August 12th, in good health, ready for a prosperous and productive school year. We look forward to seeing you all soon!

Peace,Trevor Donnelly

60th Anniversary Celebration On Friday, October 12th, the OLQH School community gathered together to celebrate the 60th anniversary. The church was filled with clergy, faculty and friends, who have dedicated years of service to OLQH school. Past principals, Sister Gloria Cain, Keith Bartlett, Mary Ann Moses, Mary Anne Hipp and JoAnn Wallwork were all in attendance and shared their own sentiments about their time at OLQH School and the “light” of OLQHS that remains with them today. The school presented Sister Gloria Cain with a plaque dedicated to the School Sisters of Notre Dame, which now hangs in the school’s main administrative building. The School Sisters of Notre Dame served as leaders and teachers of OLQHS for nearly 20 years, bringing the school from its infancy to a thriving academic institution of excellence in the early 1980s. As we move forward into the 61st year, we do so with great gratitude for those who began this journey 60 years ago, those who have kept the light burning, and those who continue to light the way for the future!
