A Message from the Pastor

I want to thank Carm Zomeri and all of our volunteers for the wonderful Parish Appreciation Dinner on Monday, February 3, at Ilio DiPaolo’s. Special thanks as well to Dennis DiPaolo and his family and their dedicated staff for the delicious meal and gracious hospitality. It was a wonderful evening.

I am deeply grateful to all of our dedicated volunteers who give selflessly of their time, talent and treasure to serve the Our Lady of Victory Parish family and to continue the great legacy of our beloved Father Baker. We are a family here at OLV and it takes all of us to make Our Lady of Victory National Shrine & Basilica a welcoming place to worship. Huge thanks to all!

Note: Cold & Flu Season Precautions I received a communication from our Diocesan Chancery Office this past week stating the following message. When Catholics gather in Jesus’ name to celebrate the Eucharist, our first concern is sharing our gratitude, our faith, and our belief in Christ among us. However, in any gathering of people, the sharing of germs is inevitable. In the midst of the cold and flu season, each of us has a responsibility of taking precautions to prevent the spread of these and other illnesses. Frequent hand-washing, covering of mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and vigilance regarding habits and procedures for disease prevention in high risk areas should be common practice. As we face a severe flu outbreak in our community, greater attention must be given to keeping one another healthy. Some practical steps, along with common sense, are critical to achieving this.

Should you come to Mass? The obligation to attend Mass on Sunday and other Holy Days of Obligation is the ordinary expectation for Roman Catholics (Canon 1247). However, extraordinary circumstances such as sickness or severe weather excuse the faithful from this obligation. If you suspect you have the flu or are suffering from a serious cold or other contagious illness, please stay at home and do not risk spreading infection to others.

The Sign of Peace Please do not take offense should someone choose not to shake hands with you during the Sign of Peace. An appropriate gesture for those concerned about spreading the flu virus might be to clasp your hands together and, with a smile, say “Peace be with you.”

Receiving Holy Communion Roman Catholics believe that both the Body and the Blood of Christ are contained fully in the Holy Eucharist under the form of either the Consecrated Host or the Precious Blood; that is, whether one receives only the Host or only the Precious Blood, one receives Jesus fully. While the Center for Disease Control has stated that the risk for infectious disease transmission by a common Communion cup is very low, nevertheless, the CDC advises that persons with an “active respiratory infection, e.g., a cold or flu” should refrain from using the common cup. Thus during the flu season and until further notice, here at Our Lady of Victory Basilica we will not be distributing the Precious Blood until further notice.

Pray for the canonization of our founder, Venerable Nelson Baker

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.

Sacrament of Marriage:

To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.

Letters of Recommendation:

Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.

Devotions:

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.

First Friday:

On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.

Care of the Sick:

Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.

Tours:

To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.

Summary of the Readings Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The person who has been “saved,” who has “heard the good news of salvation,” still lives in an unsaved world, a world sadly oblivious to the presence of God. Today’s readings outline how the disciple is present in the world.

The outline begins with Isaiah: “Share your bread . . . shelter the oppressed . . . clothe the naked” (Isaiah 58:7). Those who hear the word of salvation are not insensitive to the urgent needs of others. Then Paul reminds his flock that he brought Christ to them not in eloquence or wisdom, but by being with them in the “weakness and fear” of their daily lives (1 Corinthians 2:3). Finally, Jesus tells his disciples to go out into the gloom and darkness of the streets of the world and let God’s light shine through their good deeds.

We disciples don’t save the world. To the extent, however, that we have heard the word of God and been awakened to God’s presence, we may spread that word and bring that presence to others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

A Message from the Pastor (Continued from Page 2)

It is my sincere prayer for all of our parishioners and your loved ones that you will remain healthy during this cold and flu season. Please take care of yourself!

May Our Lady of Victory protect you and God bless you always, Fr. David

Adult Confirmation Classes

At the Easter Vigil, April 11, 2020, the Church will welcome new Catholics through reception of the Sacraments. Along with them, any properly prepared and formerly inactive Catholic may receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. We welcome any inactive, baptized adult Catholics who finished high school, who are free to marry in the Church, or if married, were married according to the rites of the Catholic Church, to register for Adult Confirmation Classes with Father Romulus. The five classes begin on Thursday, February 27, from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. in the Shrine Chapel on the lower level of the Basilica. Candidates must arrange for an interview with Father Romulus by calling 828-9425 and provide a recent Catholic Baptismal certificate before the first class.

Thank you H.S.A. for the wonderful week of events to celebrate the blessings of Catholic Education. Congratulations go out to our eighth graders. They received their high school acceptance letters last week. I am so proud to say, all who applied were accepted into their first choice high schools: Bishop Timon, Mt. St. Mary’s, Mount Mercy, St. Mary’s in Lancaster and Chesterton Academy. Our teachers and their families prepared them well! We know they will make a difference in their new high schools, just as they did here at Our Lady of Victory.

Important Dates to Note: ♦ February 10: Easter Candy Sale begins ♦ February 14: Valentine’s Day Dance – 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Reducing food waste and making it a priority, therefore, means moving toward better, fairer and more sustainable production and consumption methods. Ways to reduce food waste include: plan meals in advance prior to shopping, designate one night each week for using leftovers, and a freezer can freeze individual groceries to leftovers for later use.

Thank you for the gifts donated to the Preventive Service Program at OLV Human Services. You provided gifts for 60 young people. You made them have an extremely happy Christmas day. We had the pleasure of seeing the caregivers express their emotions and thanks for your generosity. Many of our families have not experienced unconditional kindness. They are told when they write their wish lists that they are not promised the items. You surprised us and them when you fulfilled their Christmas wish lists. Each year donors like you make a difference in the lives of the boys and girls that we serve. It is my privilege to work with you and I know that our families are grateful also. All the families had smiles on their faces on Christmas morning as per reports that we received over and over. We also know that we could not make Christmas exciting or possible for families without people like you assisting us. Please be assured that you have made a difference in children’s lives. I am amazed at your generosity and all the items donated. To say thanks does not feel like it is enough. You are special people!

We trust that you had time to spend with family and friends, and that 2020 will be a year of many exciting adventures and blessings. Have a happy and prosperous New Year!
