Sunday, September 4, 2016 - Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
This weekend we welcome Mrs. Jan Sheridan who will be speaking at all of the Masses on behalf of the annual Christ the King Seminary collection. The collection will be taken up next weekend, September 10 and 11.
Happy Labor Day Weekend! Even though it is a civil holiday, Labor Day has a kind of spiritual dimension to it. It is a day for us to pray that God will bless the work of our hands – whatever we do by way of work, we ask God to add His blessings to it. It reminds us that we are co-creators with God in all that we do. It is also a good day to pray for those among our family members and friends who are under employed or unemployed – ask God to give them meaningful work. In honor of Labor Day, the Rectory and Gift Shop will be closed on Monday, September 5. They will re-open on Tuesday at the regular time.
This Sunday, September 4, we will resume our regular Coffee and Donut Social after all Sunday morning Masses on the first weekend of each month. Please feel free to stop down to the Marian Room for a cup of coffee, a donut, and conversation with your fellow parishioners.
The Opening Mass for the beginning of our elementary school year will be celebrated on Friday, September 9, at 8:15 a.m. As the new school year begins, we will resume the 8:15 a.m. Mass for the children of our parish school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays (only on days when school is in session; not on school holidays). Of course, everyone is invited to attend these Masses on the days they are celebrated. Watch the bulletin to see those days on which it is not going to be celebrated due to school holidays.
On one of the occasions when Bishop Malone was here earlier this summer, he blessed the two new silver communion cups which we have been using for distribution of the Precious Blood at Masses. These two beautiful chalices were donated to the parish in memory of Victor and Natalie Stachowski. I am grateful for this donation of these two cups, not only because they enhance our liturgies with their beauty, but also because they are easier to handle by both the Eucharistic Ministers and the people receiving communion from them.
You may have seen the special envelope in the pews marked for the Medical Expenses of our Retired Diocesan Priests. This will become a regular special collection each year in the month of August. The proceeds from this collection will help meet the needs of those priests from our diocese who are retired and are now facing large medical expenses. Anything you can do to help this very worthy cause will be greatly appreciated.
May Jesus bless you and Our Lady of Victory watch over you.
Father Paul

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.
Sacrament of Marriage:
To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.
Letters of Recommendation:
Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.
Devotions:
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.
First Friday:
On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.
Care of the Sick:
Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.
Tours:
To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Denise Wood, Program Director/Tour information by e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-7571.
Summary of the Readings Twenty-third Sunday
in Ordinary Time
The Good News is that we have all been invited—invited to the Kingdom, invited to be disciples. It’s a life-changing invitation, and like so many other such invitations, it requires a great deal of deliberation and discernment. Whether we choose marriage, ordination, single life, or community life, we know the serious planning and consideration that accompany these profound decisions. Like the tower-builder in the Gospel, we have weighed both the monetary and emotional cost. We have pondered and planned our lives in the direction to which we believe God has called us. And while we pray for guidance and acceptance of God’s will, we often fail to understand so much. Like Solomon, we turn to God for wisdom and counsel in our life-changing decisions. Copyright © J. S. Vocation Thought Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Knowing what we are created for also means knowing what we are not created for. Deceiving ourselves to believe that our vocations are not from God would be utter foolishness, and leave us unfulfilled. If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Father Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535. You can also check out the “Priest of the Month” stories on our website: www.buffalovocations.org.
