Sunday, August 27, 2017 - Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
As you saw in last week’s bulletin, we welcome Seminarian Denning Achidi to our parish staff for the next twelve months. Denning is studying to become a priest for the Diocese of Buffalo. He is from Cameroon, West Africa. He has been assigned to our parish by Bishop Malone for his “Pastoral Year.” In the Program for Priestly Formation, (the official document which guides seminarian formation), a pastoral year is an internship year after the first two years of academic preparation at the seminary. It consists of living in a rectory and working in a parish for a year, to help the seminarian see parish life “up close and personal.” Denning will be taking part in all of the activities of our parish for the next year. When he finishes his Pastoral Year in August, 2018, he will return to Christ the King Seminary for two more years of theological formation before ordination to the priesthood. We are delighted to welcome Denning to our parish and we look forward to working with him on this important part of his preparation for priesthood.
You will notice that the security project for the front of the Basilica has begun. The project includes the reworking of the concrete sidewalks in front of the Basilica and rectory, the installation of heavy planters along the front of the Basilica property, and the installation of stainless steel bollards between the planters. The project will also include a re-working of the small parking area in front of the Basilica, turning it into a circular driveway which will cut into the lawn in front of the rectory. The planters and bollards are for added security and safety for the Basilica, preventing anyone from driving up to the building with explosives. (Do you believe that we should even have to think about this in this day and age?) The circular driveway will eliminate the need for folks who come to the rectory or to the Basilica from having to back out onto Ridge Road. (For some time now, the Lackawanna police have been suggesting that we reconfigure this area to eliminate this potentially dangerous situation). The circular driveway will be “One Way” entering closest to the Basilica and exiting closest to the rectory’s front sidewalk. The whole project is expected to be completed by the middle of the last week in August. Once again, I’m sorry for an inconvenience this may cause during construction. In the end, this work will keep the Basilica safer and more secure.
Just a heads up: Beginning with the opening of school for the new year, the 8:15 a.m. Mass, which used to be celebrated on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday when school was in session, will move to Monday and Friday at 8:15 a.m. Since this Mass is only celebrated on school days, please watch the bulletin each week of the school year.
May Jesus bless you and may Our Lady of Victory watch over you.
Father Paul
SUNDAY 08/27/17 OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 1
Pray for the canonization of our founder, Venerable Nelson Baker
Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.
Sacrament of Marriage:
To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.
Letters of Recommendation:
Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.
Devotions:
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.
First Friday:
On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.
Care of the Sick:
Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.
Tours:
To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.
Summary of the Readings Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
Peter’s history as a follower or friend of Jesus is a bit spotty. It might be natural to wonder if Jesus, in giving him the keys to the kingdom, didn’t feel a bit like a parent giving a teenager the keys to the family car. But it was at the moment when God’s power and presence broke through everything else to raise up Peter’s great profession of faith in Christ as Messiah that Jesus chose to establish the bond between the loving, forgiving mercy of heaven and our vocation to be witnesses of that love, mercy, and forgiveness on earth.
Like any parent, Jesus no doubt foresaw the failings, the irresponsible maneuvers or impaired senses, the collisions that the church would be headed for. But, most importantly, he also saw us at that moment as God prefers to see us: capable of manifesting great faith, with a willingness to remain at the feet of Christ to understand what it truly means to be Messiah and Christ. As the letter to the Romans points out to us today, we have not known the mind or the wisdom of God, but God knows us and still chooses to manifest the reign of justice, joy, beauty, and peace through us. Let this be our vocation. Let us always strive to be solid ground on which the church of Jesus Christ can be founded and on which it can continue to be built. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
