Our Lady of the Woods Parish

Mission Statement

Under the protection of the Mother of God, we are a faith community called by the

Father, energized by the Son, and moved by the Spirit to unite in witnessing and pro-

claiming the Good News. We share in friendship, gather in worship,

and do proclaim our desire to minister, wel-come, celebrate and extend His Kingdom.

Dear Parishioners, Respect Life Month continues. Mother Teresa (Saint Teresa of Kolkata) said, “I was once asked why I don’t participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I’ll be there.” She was a very wise woman. She understood that

Christianity is best understood when we show who we are for more than what we are against. Of course, standing for moral issues inevitably means being against. To stand for the protection of life in the womb means being against abortion. Standing for just wages means being against exploitation of workers. Ultimately, we are more authentically Christian when we stand for people, especially those who are most vulnerable. We must stand with women, children, those who have limitations, the elderly, the dying, refugees and all others who are hurting. As this month continues let us each reflect on our own part in this effort. I found out last week that I have been elected, once again, to the Priest Placement Board. I previously served on the Board from 2011-2015. It involves about thirty meetings each year and visits to parishes who are in transition. I always believe in serving the larger church, but it will take me away from OLOW a bit. I was on the Board during my first three years at OLOW and was able to balance this. I currently serve in three other non-parish ministries: Nuestros Pequenos Hermanas USA Board, the Vicariate V Ministry Commission, and as a site director for seminarians. I am looking at cutting back from one of these boards. This past Sunday I attended the Christi Fidelis Award ceremony in which our own Susan Manglano was awarded for her ministry at Our Lady of the Woods. Susan is heavily involved as a Cantor and Choir Member and also serves as a First Grade Catechist. She serves with dedication and joy. Congratulations! Susan is representative of so many wonderful volunteers at Our Lady of the Woods. Just a reminder that our Parish Dinner will be this Saturday, October 19th in the Finnegan Center. There is a great group of staff members and volunteers who make this celebration possible. We should be grateful to them all. Trunk or Treat is coming up. It will be held in our parking lot on Sunday afternoon, October 27th. It is always great fun for the little ones.

In Christ,
