December 2, 2018 First Sunday of Advent
Page Two
Dear Parishioners, This weekend marks the first Sunday of Advent. Advent is a time of preparation and of waiting. This season is more than preparing for Christmas. It is about preparing for Christ to enter more deeply into our lives. This is as much God’s action as it is ours. Like the ancient Israelites, we must wait on the Lord. All of us have had the experience of both active and passive waiting. Passive waiting occurs when we experience life out of our control – think of waiting for a package that we ordered to arrive or standing in a checkout line. Active waiting allows us to get ready –think of a couple preparing for the birth of their first child. They may not know the exact day when labor will begin but in their waiting, they get the nursery ready, take classes, buy baby clothes and much, more. It is waiting with a sense of preparation. This is what Advent is! We can prepare by taking to praying more, to quiet ourselves down. We can receive the sacrament of reconciliation. We can strive to see Jesus in the needy around us. Next weekend Churches around the country will have the collection for retired religious. These are mostly women religious but include men religious as well. They have given so much. Please be generous in your support. At the 11:00am Mass this Sunday we will celebrate the Rite of Election and Welcome. We have four individuals who have been meeting weekly to better understand the Catholic faith and this Sunday we formally welcome them into the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Members of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish and our own RCIA team have accompanied them. At this Rite of Welcome, we as a parish are promising to assist them with our prayers. At the 6:00 PM mass this weekend, our seventh graders will be formally accepted as candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation. The preparation for Confirmation now takes place over two years and begins in 7th grade. We have added additional requirements and are reviewing the overall curriculum and formation expectations. Please pray for these young Catholics as they begin their formal preparation to complete the sacraments of initiation. Finally, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin is this Saturday, December 8th. It is a holy day of obligation. Mass will be celebrated on the vigil at 7:00 PM and in the morning at 8:30 and 10:00 AM. In Christ,
