Dear Parishioners, This weekend we are celebrating Memorial Day. In a special way, we remember those men and women who laid down their lives to protect the people of this nation. We also pray for and honor our living veterans at all Masses this weekend. We should also thank the Veterans’ Ministry who is providing hospitality at the Sunday morning Masses this weekend.

One of my favorite proverbs goes like this, “A bridge that falls makes a thousand times the noise of a bridge that stands”. In so many ways, this is true. At times, a person who has lived a good life commits some crime and for the rest of his or her life, they are defined by that single action. A school that has a long history of educating students well will become the focal point of news stories when some action is associated with it. The good and difficult job that many educators do does not garner the attention that a teacher accused of some inappropriate action receives on the news. This can lead us to believe the worst about any group of people. It sows distrust. I mention all of this because earlier in the month of May, Jean Vanier died at the age of 92. I suspect many of you never heard his name before. He was the model of living out his Christian convictions and in the process touched the lives of thousands. Mr. Vanier was born in Switzerland of Canadian citizenship. He served in the Canadian Royal Navy and later received a doctorate in Philosophy from the Institute Catholique in Paris. He was multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and very talented. He could have done anything with his life. He chose to serve God, as a layman, by serving the most vulnerable in society. In 1963, he visited an institution in France that “served” adults with significant mental and physical limitations. In truth, this institution, like many, warehoused people. Human dignity was at a minimum. Jean Vanier was so offended that he decided to do something about this. He started a community of able bodied and less able-bodied individuals called L’Arche (The Ark). This would be a home where every person would be loved because we are all brothers and sisters. Today, thousands live in L’Arche homes around the world and thousands volunteer to live there for a year or more of their lives. Jean Vanier remained a humble man even though he received numerous awards and wrote many books. He lived a life that reminded us that success is found in giving away, not acquiring, in community, not in isolation. Every person is to be loved. His was the work of the church! His was the work of Christ! His death was covered by religious publications, yet in the popular media, nothing was said. Of course not! He was the true face of the church – a bridge standing tall and quietly going lovingly. There was little noise. In Christ,

Father Mike
