  • Dear Parishioners, We often say that Pentecost is the “birthday” of the Church. So once again, we have the opportunity to celebrate and reflect on how we’re doing. Within the context of Pentecost, we do that in regards to the gifts (remember how many there are??) and how well we use them. How well do we use them with our families? How well do we use them at work or at school? How well do we use them at play? Or a better question, maybe, is how well do we live them? And of course, how well do we live them as disciples in our Parish community? And that for me is a great segue into Parish volunteering and the Christmas Bazaar. (Am I subtle or what??) We’ve got a lot of great ways to participate in Parish life and if you stopped by the Church this afternoon, you’d see that. Most of our ministries and groups are getting their pictures taken for the 100th Directory today. Some folks will be staying a while since they’re in quite a few groups. That’s awesome but it’s also not required. I remember in my first assignment (more years ago that I really like counting!) that when one big event came up, I met someone who I remember seeing at Church but not in many of the groups. This big event was her thing. She threw herself into that and did a great job for the Parish. I realized then, and I know I’ve shared with you before, that it’s ok to be involved in one thing (note that I’m not saying “just” one thing). Again, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if everyone does one thing, everything gets done and everyone gets something out of it. Remember, Celebrate and Commit. If you find yourself looking to do more as a disciple, why not Commit to one thing? You’ll have fun too, I’m sure. And we can apply that to the Christmas Bazaar as well. I mentioned before that we’re starting the planning a bit later than normal but we are starting. I’ll be meeting with some of the committee chairs soon but it’s the donations that become the big issue. After my last column on this point, a few people contacted me with offers of help and a donation or two. I’m very grateful. And it works with the “if everyone does one thing” concept. If you know a business, work for a business or ARE a business that would make a donation (or you think they would), email the Rectory and let me know. We don’t want to overburden businesses but even a small donation is appreciated. Certain gift cards, for example, we might not make into raffle baskets but might use to purchase something for the kitchen to offset those costs. And while it might be an organizational challenge, I’d rather have 30 or 40 people get one donation in than 3 or 4 people burning out trying to do the same thing. So enjoy the “birthday” and make use of the opportunity it brings—a chance to look at ourselves and be the best selves we can be—by getting involved and living the gifts. God bless. Fr. Schiele

From Your Parish Health & Wellness Ministry… How does a stroke happen? A stroke happens when a blood vessel that feeds the brain gets blocked (ischemic stroke) or bursts (hemorrhagic stroke). Then, that part of the brain cannot work, and thus neither can that part of the body it controls. TIA – Transient Ischemic Attack – are warning strokes! They can happen before a major stroke. TIA is when a blood clot clogs an artery for only a short time and resolves in a few minutes.

The original Church was completed in December 1919. It had a coal stove for heat and, since electricity did not arrive in Hilltown until 1927-1928, the Church had an early version of a generator that worked on its own whim.

  • CONTINUING CHRISTIAN DEVELOPMENT (CCD): We thank all our catechists for answering the call and invitation given by our Holy Father and for their dedication in the faith formation in our parish. In the words of Pope John Paul II, “I invite you to continue to be concerned with the formation of young people by seeking appropriate forms of teaching. In response to their desire for a warm human experience, suggest to them that they become acquainted with Christ and meet Him in a strong and structured process of personal and community prayer. With regard to catechesis for children and young people, it is important to offer them a high-quality religious and moral education based on the clear and solid elements of faith which lead to an intense spiritual life. How can the proposal made to children truly take root in them and how can Christ transform their being and their action from within if they do not meet Him through continual instruction and Catholic practice.” WE EXTEND A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO ALL OUR CATECHISTS!
