My Dear friends,
In 1571, a fleet of the Holy League, which was outmatched by the ships of the Ottoman Empire, engaged in battle
with the Muslims in what was then the largest naval battle in Western history. It marked a turning point in the
history of Europe, stopping the Ottoman military expansion. It was a high point of Western Christendom after
the wars of religion that followed the Protestant Reformation. Europe was almost lost for good, ready to follow the
history of Northern Africa and Arabia, where Christianity was slowly made extinct, or near extinct, by the followers
of Islam. Sadly, today, many of the countries in Europe have invited these same followers into their countries,
where through a high birth rate among the Muslims and practically no birth rate among the Europeans, the continent
is slowly being conquered, which is a tenant of the Islamic religion, to conquer all lands and force all people into
submission (what the word Islam means) and the worship of Allah.
But during 1571, the Catholics of Europe came together and fought back and through the intercession of the
Blessed Virgin Mary, won this most important battle. Pope St. Pius V, a Dominican, instituted the feast of
Our Lady of Victory to commemorate this battle. He called forth for the Catholics to pray the rosary for victory in
the battle. One of the commanders, Giovanni Andrea Doria, kept an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe in his ship’s
state room. Our Lady of Victory is now celebrated as Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7th. The rosary is a most
powerful weapon against evil. Our Blessed Mother, at her apparition at Fatima, called upon Catholics to pray the
rosary. Pope Pius XII, Pope St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI were completely devoted to Our Lady of
Fatima. It was on the feast day of Our Lady of Fatima that Pope John Paul was shot, and he believed that it was
Our Lady of Fatima that saved his life, when he bent down to venerate an image of Our Lady when the assassin
fired his gun.
It was also Pope Leo XIII and St. Padre Pio, (who had a devotion of Our Lady of Pompeii, which through that
devotion has brought us the 54 day Rosary novena) who were big supporters of the rosary. Pope Leo XIII wrote
17 encyclicals on the rosary and encouraged people to pray the 54 day rosary novena. Padre Pio prayed the rosary
whenever he had a free moment, and in the course of a day, Padre Pio prayed many rosaries. For him, the rosary
was the ultimate weapon against evil. We must be men and women of the rosary, especially in these turbulent
times. In October and May, the Legion of Mary have been praying the rosary before Mass. Maybe, during the other
months, instead of reading the bulletin or having conversations before Mass, we can prepare ourselves spiritually by
quietly praying the rosary in the pew. It takes 15-18 minutes to pray silently the rosary, and the spiritual benefits for
you, for your family, and for our church will far outweigh the sharing of conversations that do not help us to prepare
for the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
God Bless.
Fr. John
