Calendar of Events May 25-June 1

This season of transitions and graduations is often bitter-sweet. The joy of achievement and looking to a new phase in life is sometimes tinged with the sadness of losing the familiar and the old. We are delighted to see many of our young parishioners graduating from college or high school. We recognized the high school graduates at the 8:30am Mass last Sunday. A gifted and accomplished group they are. We will miss them as they mi-grate to college, and we wish them well. The Gospel selection from John’s Gospel for this Sunday has its own paths and sadness. As Jesus announces his departure, the disciples feel vulnerable. Jesus, like a devoted parent, prom-ises his disciples that he will not leave them orphaned. Even as he announces his departure, he pledges to send the Spirit of Truth to guide and comfort them. We reach a highpoint in John’s Gospel. “The Spirit “ remains with you and will be in you” and “you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you”. Here we are drawn into the very life of the Godhead. This is sublime thought too wonderful for words. This is the idea of theosis, or divinization, as explored by sev-eral Fathers of the Church. This is reflected in the Liturgy when the Deacon or Priest preparing the Eucharistic Chalice says: “by the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our hu-manity”. Mystery indeed! _______________________________________________ Pastoral Council Elections: Thanks to all who participated prayerfully in selecting new members to serve on the Pastoral Council. You have selected the following new members: Beth Brouillette, Stephen Reese, Carl Rochford. Mark McRae and David Springer have been selected to fill the incomplete terms of Scott Denton and Paul Boyle Jr. Congratulations to all these new members. I know they will make a valuable contribution to the work of the Pastoral Council. A Word of Thanks and Appreciation: To Bucky Funderburg, John Stice, Elizabeth Thomaston, Scott Denton, and Paul Boyle Jr. for their years of service on the Pastoral Council. Their gifts and talents enriched us all. Welcome Home: To college students returning from college and spending the summer at home. Have a restful summer. Vacation Time: By the time you read this I will be on vacation in Ireland with family and officiating at another family wed-ding. You will be remembered each day as I celebrate Mass in a small country church. Thanks to Deacon Terry & Deacon Serge for their pastoral care of the Parish and to the visiting priests who will be here on weekends. Be back on June 6th “if the creek don’t rise”. Peace & Blessings, Fr. Sexton
