Welcome: The Redemptorist Community and Pastoral

Staff of the Redemptorist Renewal Center extends a warm and loving welcome to all who come here to pray and worship in our church. We are a community that welcomes all people as brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. Together we are the body of Christ, living and active today.

Our Lady of the Desert

Dear Church Family, I am dedicating this week’s article to make an invitation to you to consider deepening your

commitment as a member of the Redemptorist family, specifically as a Redemptorist Associate. At this weekend’s Masses, I will dedicate the homily to make this invitation. Our local Redemptorist Associates will be on hand to give you information about becoming an Associate and to

explain an upcoming virtual formation on May 2 and 3. We also celebrate the 200th anniversary of the death of St. Clement Hofbauer, C.Ss.R., who founded the northern European precursor of the Redemptorist Associates in the early days of the 1800’s. They gathered to share faith stories and help him minister during dangerous times.

Who are the Redemptorists? The Redemptorist Congregation was founded in 1732 by Saint Alphonsus Liguori. Today the “Redemptorist family” includes professed Redemptorist priests and brothers, and many other persons,

both married and single, who are connected to the Redemptorists in a variety of ways. Historically, Redemptorists have worked alongside the laity in many different ways. Without the laity, many apostolic programs throughout the entire world would not be able to succeed. All are, according to their varied callings,

missionary disciples of Christ the Most Holy Redeemer, drawn to and animated by the spirit of Saint Alphonsus Liguori and the Redemptorists. One form of connection and involvement is that of Redemptorist Associates. Who are the Tucson Redemptorist Associates? Here at the Redemptorist Renewal Center, we have had a “circle”

of men and women Redemptorist Associates, founded in January of 2018 by Fr. Paul Coury. Thirty-five persons completed the formation preparation in Redemptorist Spirituality. Ever since, we have met twice monthly for faith-sharing and ongoing formation rooted in the Redemptorist charism and spirituality. All are engaged in some manner in local ministries at the Renewal Center, Our Lady of the Desert Church community and in the local

area are reaching out to those most in need. Fr. Coury and Lee Morrison were the first co-directors of our local circle. When I arrived, I joined Lee as co-director. Recently Jenny Martin was invited to be new co-director with me. There is quite a variety in our meetings – spiritual presentations, prayer, Redemptorist vocation sharing,

storytelling about Redemptorist history, Redemptorist saints and blessed, our personal journeys, and fellowship. We end with dinner in the Renewal Center dining room. Now we can also connect as a virtual circle – one that is not defined by a location but connected through the internet via Zoom video conferencing technology. This

last point is the more immediate invitation I would like to make to you. Keep reading !!

An upcoming workshop in Redemptorist Spirituality, sponsored by the Redemptorists of the Denver Province.

Those who participate in the workshop are invited to explore the possibility of becoming Redemptorist Associates. The workshop will be offered as part of a gathered group at the Renewal Center on Saturday, May 2, from 12 - 4 pm and on Sunday, May 3, 12 - 4 pm. One may also attend this workshop individually. This virtual

formation will be done live, directed by Fr. Greg May, C.Ss.R., from Chicago. Chicago is in the Central Time Zone; thus, 2 hours ahead of us. We will use “zoom” video conferencing. There is no cost to attend. Why this workshop? The purpose of this workshop is to gather lay people interested in exploring Redemptorist

Spirituality. By understanding this spirituality, you will get insights into the Redemptorist Congregation that ministers to you in the Tucson area. If this perspective of faith resonates with you, you might want more contact with this religious order for your faith journey and ministry. We will also be making the invitation to our

brothers and sisters at Santa Catalina Parish at the end of the month. Contact John Davenport at [email protected] or 440.478.1203 to register or for information about the workshop. The deadline for registration is APRIL 15. Soon I will tell you about an onsite formative retreat at the Redemptorist Renewal

Center in November, for present and future Associates. St. Alphonsus quoted Psalm 130: With Him is Plentiful Redemption. Amen! – Fr. Ed Vella, C.Ss.R.

GROUP SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING OF THE SICK As a precaution, at the suggestion of the bishop and diocesan chaplains in hospitals, we have decided to suspend the monthly group celebration of the sacrament of anointing of the sick after weekend Masses.

Although I have seen to it to change the blessed oils in our sacristy and we priests wash our hands, cross contamination is a real possibility. We anoint on the forehead and on the hands. We will monitor the situation and I will announce When the group anointing's will resume. As always, if any individual who has a serious illness or planning for surgery desires to be anointed, simply contact one of the priests personally. Thanks for your understanding! Fr. Ed Vella, CSsR Rector, Our Lady of the Desert ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Our Lady of the Desert, Well, I’m home now recuperating- Thank you so much for visiting me, phone calls Etc. It was overwhelming & something I could never repay! Again, Thank You All, I really appreciate you! ~Ed Kenyon
