THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD

The feast of the Annunciation of the Lord celebrates Angel Gabriel's appearance to the Virgin Mary and his announcement that she had been chosen to be the mother of the savior of the world. Also being celebrated during this feast was Mary's fiat, which means "let it be" in Latin - her willing acceptance of the news.

ST. MARTIN, I

St. Martin was born in Todi, Italy. He was elected pope in 649 during the period of the last christological controversy. For his defense of Christ as true God and true man, he was exiled by the Byzantine em-peror Constans II to Crimea where he died, broken by his sufferings.

ST. STANISLAUS Stanislaus of Szczepanów, or Stanisław Szczepanowski, was a Bishop of Kraków known chiefly for having been martyred by the Polisih king Boleslaw II the Bold. Stanislaus is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church as Saint Stanislaus the Martyr (as distinct from Stanislaus Kostka).

DIVINE MERCY The Divine Mercy of Jesus, also known as the Divine Mercy, is a Roman Catholic devotion to Jesus Christ associated with the reputed apparitions of Jesus revealed to Saint Faustina Kowalska.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY REFLECTION April 8, 2018

The remarkable thing about belief is that it always has room for unbelief. Like mystery itself, belief isn’t something we have and that’s it. There is always room to grow in our belief, just as there is always

room for our unbelief. We call Thomas “doubting Thomas” and so he was. Truth be told, so are all of us. There come times in our lives when we are simply overcome with emptiness and absence-perhaps the death of a loved one, the

painful illness of a small child, loss of a job. At these times doubt or unbelief are natural. This doesn’t mean we have lost our faith, it means that at these times we need to keep our eyes focused on the risen Christ and, in due time, we know the Lord is with us inviting us to belief. (Living Liturgy, p.116)

LITURGY CORNER

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes children acquire nicknames in childhood that stalk them through adulthood: “Pinky,” “Boo-boo,” and the like. This Sunday was once called “Low Sunday,” a step down from Easter glory, and an unfortunate nickname since Easter rejoicing goes on for fifty days. Traditionally this is the day when the newly baptized put away their white baptismal robes and returned to their everyday life after a week of intense celebration. Of course, the goal was to take up everyday duties with a very new point of view. A long title for the day was Dominica in albis deposito, or “The Lord’s Day for Putting Away the Albs,” so no wonder the nickname “Low Sunday” arose. In the old calendar it was also called “Quasimodo Sunday,” after the first word of the opening chant, Quasimodo geniti infantes, or “As newborn infants,” a reference to the newly baptized taken from the Epistle of Peter. Victor Hugo’s bell-ringing hero in The Hunchback of Notre Dame was abandoned as an infant on the threshold of the ca-thedral of Paris on Low Sunday, 1467, and named “Quasimodo” for the feast.

SO THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE It is not often that the author of one of the books of the Bible comes right out and tells us directly why he is writing what he is writing. In this Sunday’s Gospel reading, taken from the conclusion of John’s Gospel, the author tells us that he has chosen to re-cord these events so “that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name” (20:31). The letter of John echoes this idea by saying that “[e]veryone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God” (5:1) -what we might refer to as being “born again.” Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this Second Sunday of Easter shows us exactly what it looks like when believers are born again through faith.

EVERYTHING God, of your goodness give me yourself, for you are enough for me. And only in you do I have everything. —St. Julian of Norwich
