LITURGY CORNER

SAINT MARIA GORETTI (1890-1902) July 6 Does anything match a mother’s pride in her children? First Communions, Confirmations, gradu-ations, weddings: how these delight a mother’s heart! Imagine, then, Assunta Goretti, the only moth-er ever to attend her child’s canonization! In poverty-stricken rural Italy, widowed Assunta tended fields for the Serenelli family, whose eighteen-year-old son, Alessandro, propositioned her barely twelve-year-old Maria; then, when she resisted, crying, “It is a sin! God forbids it!” he stabbed her fourteen times. As she lay dying, Maria assured the attending priest, “Yes, I forgive Alessandro! I want him to be in Paradise with me someday.” Imprisoned, unrepent-ant, Alessandro changed after dreaming that a radi-ant Maria had offered him fourteen lilies. “I’ve kept my promise,” she smiled. “You’ll be here with me someday.” Upon release, he rushed to beg Assun-ta’s forgiveness. “Jesus has forgiven you,” she re-plied, “my Maria, too. How can I refuse?” Next morn-ing, mother and murderer walked arm in arm to church and knelt side by side for Communion.

¿A quién volcarnos entonces?

SHARE THE BURDEN “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). These words of our Savior seem to be in stark contrast to the previous chapter from the same Gospel, when we were told that if we do not take up our crosses, we are not worthy of Christ. Connecting these two messages might help us on our faith journeys. Being a follower of Christ surely means that we must embrace the cross, in its mystery of both suffering and triumph. This is something that we need not do alone, for the burden is often too heavy for us to carry by ourselves. Who, then, do we turn to? We can turn to the Body of Christ—the community of disciples gathered for worship. When we find the burden too heavy, let us remember that we can share that burden with our Christian sisters and brothers, who can help bring us rest.

— Mateo 11:28

St. Augustine Zhao Rong was a Chinese soldier who accompanied Bishop John Gabriel Taurin Dufresse of the Paris Foreign Mission Society to his martyrdom in Beijing. Not long after his baptism, Au-gustine was ordained as a diocesan priest. Augustine Zhao Rong and his 119 companions are saints of the Catholic Church. The 87 Chinese Catholics and 33 Western missionaries, from the mid-17th century to 1930, were martyred because of their ministry and, in some cases, for their refusal to apostatize. Augustine was martyred in 1815.

FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE

Reopening our church for public worship must include every precaution to eliminate a second wave of in-fection; consequently, the Archdiocese has established the following guidelines to protect you as well as our fellow parishioners. Safest Practices for Attending Mass Those feeling unwell or believe they may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 should not attend Mass. One should not attend Mass if he or she is experiencing any symptoms of illness, especially the following: • A temperature above 100.4 F • Cough or sore throat • Shortness of breath • Recent loss of smell or taste

Chills, muscle aches, or gastrointestinal upset

If attending Mass, one must adhere to the following: All parishioners must wear a mask. Maintain six feet of social distance from others who are not from the same household at all times while in

the church or on church property. Refrain from physical contact such as holding hands during the Our Father. Choirs and singing will be held to a minimum.

Safest Practices for Receiving Communion Newly available evidence shows that virus spreads quickly through oral secretions; therefore, communion is most safely received as follows:

Communion will be received in the hand. Both the priest and the communicant will be wearing masks.

The priest and communicant will sanitize hands prior to distributing/receiving communion. Communion lines will be avoided – wait for the usher to dismiss each row individually and communion will be distributed as you exit the Church.
