PASTOR’S COLUMN Dear OLPH Parishioners, As you are probably aware, Fr. Joseph’s term here at OLPH will end June 30, 2015. And as you are also probably aware, my term as Pastor at OLPH ends June 30, 2016. However, over the last few days some developments have occurred and I would like to share them with you. Last week, the Vicar of Clergy for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Msgr. Lorenzo Miranda called me and asked me, since I was in the last year of my 2nd six year term here at OLPH, to transfer to St. Dorothy Parish in Glendora. I told Msgr. Miranda, that since Fr. Joseph was leaving OLPH this year as well, I did not think that both of us leaving simultaneously would be beneficial for this parish. He felt that made good sense. Shortly thereafter, Msgr. Miranda called back and said that the St. Dorothy Parish was in need of a change and that the Archdiocese felt that I was someone who could be helpful in that situation and he once again encouraged me to pray about this move. In addition, he stated that Fr. Joseph could stay at OLPH so that the parish would not lose both of its priests in the same year, and furthermore suggested that the Archdiocese was very open to naming him Administrator Pro-Tem at OLPH for the 2015-2016 year. I came to OLPH over 13 years ago simply because the Archdiocese asked me to come and because they felt that I could be of some service to all of you. Thirteen years later they have asked me again to be of ser-vice to the Archdiocese and I feel God’s hand guiding this request. Therefore, today I am announcing that I will be leaving OLPH on June 30, 2015 to become Pastor of St. Dorothy Parish in Glendora. Moreover, effective July 1, 2015 Fr. Joseph will be named Administrator Pro-Tem of OLPH. Please congratulate Fr. Joseph on this marvelous opportunity. Over the next several weeks, I will be writing to you to give you more information about this transition. Let us pray for God’s Spirit to guide, enlighten, ease and comfort all those affected by these moves.

CARDINAL MCINTYRE FUND SPECIAL COLLECTION - MAY 3

Since 1951, this special fund helps those in CRISIS situations from Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Your contribution provides a one-time emergency help for food, utilities, trans-portation, medical, housing, or funeral expenses.

The Fund is not a replacement or supplement for welfare or other forms of public assistance. It does not support persons’ living needs on a continuing basis. Rather the Fund acts to solve immedi-ate, pressing problems. The goal is service to the “neediest of the needy,” those for whom no other resources exist.

Thank you for your generosity. Envelopes are in the pews.

This reflection is taken from Living the Word published by World Library Publications.

WHAT GOOD WOULD A DEAD SHEPHERD BE TO A FLOCK?

Though most of us don’t have a lot of experiences with shepherds, it might seem to us plain fool-ish, a matter of misplaced priorities, that a shepherd would actually lay down his life for his sheep.

After all, what is the point of keeping sheep except to provide for one’s own needs?

What point is there in saving the sheep if the shepherd dies?

A moment’s reflection, however, allows us to grasp Jesus’ point.

True leaders, “GOOD SHEPHERDS,” are those who seek not their own well-being and flourishing; but the well-being and flourishing of those who are entrusted to their care.

While we may not have a lot of contact with shepherds, we can think of many instances of people laying down their lives for others.

Any parent who has walked the floor in the middle of the night with a sick or fussy baby knows what it means to lay down one’s life.

So too, any child who cares for an aging parent with patience and for-bearance knows what it means to lay down one’s life.

Any employer or supervisor who stays late at the office figuring out how to tweak the budget, or who forgoes a bonus in order not to have to lay anyone off, knows what it means to lay down one’s life.

All of these involve a kind of dying to oneself so that others might have life in its fullness.

Also, Jesus’ words concerning the good shepherd make it clear that laying down our life for oth-ers is in fact the path to fullness of life for us as well.

Jesus, who willingly lays down his life, also has the power to take it up again.

And in taking up his own life, he takes up the lives of all of those who have laid down their lives for others.

In the season of Easter, we celebrate the power of Jesus to raise to new life all those who, out of love for God and neighbor, die to themselves so that others might have life.

Question for Reflection:

What motivates people to make sacrifices for others?

Jesus’ words concerning the good

shepherd make it clear that laying down our

life for others is in fact the path to fullness of

life for us as well.

SPIRITUALITY 101: EASPIRITUALITY 101: EASTER PONDERINGSSTER PONDERINGS This reflection is taken from Living Faith published by Creative Communica-tions for the Parish.

IN AWE OF DAILY MIRACLES

By the LORD has this been done; it is wonderful in our eyes. Psalm 118:23

There have been times in my life when I have been left speechless by the wonder of what I saw before me, such as my first glimpse of the Grand Can-yon, my wife walking down the aisle at our wedding and the birth of our two children.

I had no words.

What I saw before me was so awe-inspiring that I knew the hand of God had to be at work.

Einstein said, “There are only two ways to live your life.

One is as though nothing is a miracle.

The other is as though everything is a miracle.”

We can see each sunrise, each newborn child, each encounter with beauty and chalk them all up to chance, or we can stand back in wonder at these daily miracles and choose to see the hand of God.

The first option is a yawn; the second is a gasp.

You choose.

Lord, fill my life with wonder and a sense of you. Question for Reflection:

Do you live your life yawning or gasping?

Einstein said, “There are only two ways to live

your life. One is as though nothing is a

miracle. The other is as though everything is

a miracle.”

Paz, Padre Mark

Grandma, who appeared to become an ever-more intimidating personality as the years went on, was giving direc-tions to her grown grandson who was

coming to visit with his wife:

"You come to the front door of the apartment complex. I am in apartment 14T. There is a big panel at the door. With your elbow push button 14T. I will buzz you in. Come inside, the eleva-tor is on the right. Get in, and with your elbow hit 14. When you get out I am on the left. With your elbow, hit my doorbell."

"Grandma, that sounds easy, but why am I hitting all these buttons with my elbow?" the grandson asked.

"You're coming empty handed ... ?" Cybersalt.org
