Feast Day October 22
OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH ERIE, PA
Our Mission Statement: Our Lady of Peace is a Catholic Community of Faith called to proclaim the
greatness of the Lord through Worship, Service, Education and Ministry.
Sunday’s Readings: First Reading - As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight (Exodus 17:8-13). Psalm - Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth (Psalm 121). Second Reading - Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed (2 Timothy 3:14 - 4:2). Gospel - Will not God secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? (Luke 18:1-8). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.
PERSISTENCE Today’s readings are about persistence, passionate persistence. Exodus tells of a battle won despite weariness because Moses, with help from Aaron and Hur, held his hands raised. Timothy asks that same persistence of his community and us. Luke tells of a court case won by a widow, despite the dishonesty of the judge, because she will not leave him alone. The psalm reminds us that God is everywhere, guarding us from harm day and night, coming and going, now and forever. The readings are about persistence, the relentless, unwavering pursuit of what must not be lost. The readings are about God’s passionate persistence in pursuing us, seeking to win our hearts. Members of the 31 Club agree to go to daily Mass on a particular day every month and offer that Mass for an increase of vocations to the Church. There is a great need for vocations in the Church today. One of the best ways to increase vocations is through prayer, and the greatest prayer we have is the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Upcoming Mass commitments: Oct. 20: Debi C., Kim D., James T., Roseann G., Donna G. Oct. 21: George O., Connie R., Maureen T., Rami S. Oct. 22: John G., Sally R., Dianne Y., Gloria M. Oct. 23: Heidi A. Oct. 24: Mary Ann A., Magherita H., Audrey & Robert H. Oct. 25: Christine O. Oct. 26: Cynthia B., Dave W., Joe S., Deb T., Corky Y. If you would like to join the OLP 31 Club, please call Dave or Kathy Wayman at 397-6443. There are no dues and no meetings, only opportunities for grace and the satisfaction that comes from helping to fulfill a great need in the Church.

OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH ERIE, PA
From the Pastor’s Desk… To my Spiritual Family of Our Lady of Peace-
It is hard to believe that the pilgrimage to the Holy Land that we started planning a year and a half ago is already here. 41 pilgrims will start our journey to Israel next Saturday, October 26th and will return Tuesday, November 5th. I do want to explain that I broke two of my own rules for scheduling pilgrimages when planning this one. One, it is over two weekends and two, it is over a Holy Day (All Saints). I did that because those were the only dates we could get rooms at the Notre Dame Center in Jerusalem. It is a Catholic institution with a Chapel and is right outside the old city walls. It takes the Jerusalem experience to another level so I hope you can understand my reasons for scheduling at this time and missing what I am. And I am very grateful to know you will be in good hands with Fr. Hoffman.
Our pilgrimage group had a meeting last week and I shared with them the difference between a trip and a pilgrimage. One of the main differences is that a pilgrimage is taken with a clear spiritual commitment to offer the pilgrimage (as a whole including the daily Mass, rosary and other communal prayers throughout) as a prayer for personal transformation and the intentions for the church and others that one brings with them. This includes offering all the spiritual and physical challenges and inconveniences as a prayer as well. So I want all of you to know that all of us on our pilgrimage will be taking your intentions with us to the most holy sites in Christendom. And as a way for us to know the specific intentions you would like us to pray for, there are binders at all the doors of the church this weekend where you can write your intentions (they will be there until next Saturday morning at 9am). The tradition in Jerusalem is to place your written intentions in between the stones of the Wailing Wall (the Western Foundational Wall of the Temple of Solomon that is still exposed and is the holiest site for those of the Jewish faith). So our time at the Wailing Wall on Friday, November 1st will be the climax of our intercessory prayer for you when we will leave the intentions you provide us and pray for them.
Your prayers for our group (for safety and openness to the graces God desires for us) are also appreciated. I look forward to sharing those graces with you upon our return. May God bless our pilgrimage and our week ahead!
Yours in Christ, Fr. Rich
Our Lady of Peace, patroness of our parish & school…. pray for us! St. Nicholas, patron of the Erie Catholic School System. pray for us! Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, patroness of the Catholic Church of the USA… pray for us! St. Joseph, universal patron of the church…. pray for us! St. Patrick, patron of the Diocese of Erie…. pray for us! Other notes from the pastor… **Rite of Enrollment for Confirmation Candidates This weekend at the 11am Mass, 57 of our parishioners at Our Lady of Peace will take part in the Rite of Enrollment. They make a public commitment to completing their initiation in our Catholic faith through the Sacrament of Confirmation on April 20th. Please keep our Confirmation Candidates in your prayers!
**Book of Remembrance Our parish Book of Remembrance is available in the vestibule throughout October. You may write the names of beloved family and friends who have gone home to be with our Lord. The Book of Remembrance will be placed near the altar on the Feast of All Souls, November 2, and we will continue to pray for these loved ones throughout November. **All Saints Day is Friday, November 1st and is a Holy Day of Obligation as we honor the Church Triumphant and seek the intercession of our holy friends in heaven. Masses at OLP are 7AM, 12:10PM and 7PM (there is no 9PM Mass since there is no school that day). **All Souls Day Since All Soul’s Day (November 2nd) falls on a Saturday this year we will only have one Mass at 8AM. The 5PM Saturday Evening Mass will be for Sunday but we will include the traditional Memorial Service for those who have had funerals at OLP as well as other family and friends who have passed away over the last year as part of that Mass. See elsewhere in the bulleting for more information on that. **All Hallow’s Eve I will be away for Halloween this year but Fr. Hoffman will continue the tradition of the last few years of handing out candy at the rectory. So stop by for a trick or treat on Thursday, October 31st between 6-8pm. **Holy Hour for Vocations The week of November 3-9 is National Vocation Awareness Week. We will have a Holy Hour of Eucharistic Adoration for that intention on Wednesday, November 6th at 7PM. Please join us in asking the Lord to provide more workers for the vineyard. I am grateful to Selah Praise Band for leading our Praise and Worship music for the holy hour during their regular practice time. **Faithful to the Finish 5K Thank you to everyone who supported our 5th Annual OLP 5K in support of our parish needy and school scholarship funds. I appreciate all those who braved the colder weather this year and participated in the run/walk as well as all of our volunteers. A big and special thank you to Cynthia Berarducci who does ALL the organizational work and with whom we could never do this. Also, I am grateful to our generous sponsors who are responsible for 75% of the proceeds! Please see elsewhere for more recognition of our sponsors. **Month of the Rosary/Daily Rosary Among other things, October is traditionally designated as the month of the rosary since the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is on October 7th. I remind you that the Rosary is prayed communally at Our Lady of Peace Monday through Friday at 11:40AM in the main church (before the 12:10PM Mass). Also, we will pray the rosary after the 8AM Mass on Saturdays throughout October as well. **Upcoming Cursillo Retreats There will be a Men’s Cursillo on October 17-20th and a Women’s Cursillo on November 21-24th both at Our Lady of Mercy in Harborcreek. As I stated before, I would like to see a table of 6-8 OLP parishioners at each of these retreats. They are great opportunities to be renewed in your spiritual life and your relationship with God so please consider this gift to yourself. Call the office or contact me if you are interested.

Be Baptized and Sent - on Mission in the World!
Today on World Mission Sunday, in this Extraordinary Missionary Month, we are called to personal encounter with Jesus Christ alive in the Church, and to offer, through this Eucharistic celebration, our prayers and our generous financial support, through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, to continue the mission of Jesus. Today we are “sent” out to witness to Mission in the world through our prayers and personal sacrifices for our brothers and sisters around the world. As little as… $25 helps support a catechist for a month in remote Latin America $75 provides for the work of religious Sisters caring for orphaned children in Africa $100 assists poor children in boarding schools in Asia As always, your prayers are your most treasured gift to the Missions. Your prayers and financial help, offered today, WORLD MISSION SUNDAY, support mission priests, religious Sisters and Brothers, and lay catechists who are Christ’s witnesses to a world so in need of His healing, love, and peace. For more information on the Extraordinary Missionary Month, please visit: go to http://www.october2019.va/en.html.

Box Tops for Education
Box Tops for Education has changed!
Participating brands have changed their packaging from the traditional Box Tops to the new Box Tops label.
Going forward, instead of clipping from packages and checking expiration dates, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt. The Box Tops for Education team has worked hard to build a NEW-and-improved, user friendly Box Tops mobile app.
The new app features state-of-the-art technology that allows you to scan your store receipt, find participating products and instantly add Box Tops to our school’s earnings online.
Be sure to download the new app or update your existing app If you still have traditional Box Tops clips at home, make sure to send them to the school. We will still earn cash for all clipped Box Tops until they expire.
Thanks for helping our school get what it needs!

The OLP Prayer Ministry
This is a ministry for those individuals who are unable to attend usual parish functions perhaps due to an impairment, lack of transportation or illness. This active ministry can be done from home, a nursing home, the hospital, etc. Those who participate will be asked to voluntarily pray for a specific group, ministry or function as the meeting, ministry or function is occurring. Prayer is vital to our lives and keeps us connected as members of the Body of Christ. For more information or if you have questions, contact: Deacon John at [email protected] or Tammie Mang in the Faith Formation Office at 814-838-9983, [email protected].

Saturday, October 5th was the 5th annual Faithful to the Finish 5K Race
We would like to thank all of our participants and volunteers for braving the chilly weather. Yes the weather was on the chilly side
however, we were treated to a beautiful sunrise! And to all the smiles of the racers as they finished!
They stayed the course and were: Faithful to the Finish!
A huge Thank You to all of our sponsors, who without them we would not be able to raise money for the Our Lady of Peace Needy Fund and the OLP School Scholarship Fund:
GOLD SPONSOR: Klein Plating Works, Inc. Wesmiller Family
SILVER SPONSOR: Chuck & Judy Buckeye
BRONZE SPONSOR: Charisma Salon DJ Drew Smith Industrial Sales & Mfg., Inc.
We are able to donate $2,750 to the OLP Needy Fund and $2,750 to the OLP School Scholarship Fund!
Mark your calendar for next
year’s race: Saturday, September 19, 2020
Thank you to: ~Doug Luthringer and the Cub Scout for presenting the American Flag ~Mike Markiewicz for the beautiful photos (visit www.olp.org) ~Pro Bike+Run Timers for the great job with timing the race

May all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
Everyone in the OLP parish community is invited to attend the
Mass for All Souls being celebrated on
Saturday, November 2, 2019 5:00PM
We will offer our regular Saturday Mass as an opportunity for peace and reflection as the parish community honors our family and friends who have passed away this year.
Come and celebrate our hope and promise of new life through Christ Jesus. All are welcome.
Please contact the church office to include the name of a loved one whose funeral was celebrated in the past year.
