JANUARY 24, 2016 THIRD SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me! All throughout 2016, the Gospel according to Luke will be our sure guide in our weekly celebrations. Sunday after Sunday the Church will be offering us the words, deeds and actions of Jesus of Nazareth, the anointed One (Messiah-Christ), who came to bring glad tidings to the poor and salvation for all. The sacred author (St. Luke, in this case) presents himself at the beginning of his Gospel as the follower of Jesus, who decided after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in orderly sequence. He presents the result of his efforts to most excellent Theophilus so that he may realize, the certainty of the teachings received. Today we see Jesus visiting the Synagogue of Nazareth, the town where he grew up, and according to His custom he stood up and proclaimed for the people the passage of the prophet Isaiah, where the prophet presents the chosen one of God. After proclaiming the word, Jesus clearly states to the listeners: Today, this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing… hence those who knew the Lord, are now to clearly understand the Glory of his mission. Among the incredible happenings that the missionary activity of the Christ, the anointed one, is to carry out are: -Bringing glad tidings to the poor, -Proclaiming liberty to captives, -Recovering sight to the blind and -Freeing the oppressed. All of these as a way of restoring our broken humanity. The beauty of the promises hidden in the words of the prophet, and used by the Lord to inaugurate his public minis-try, abides precisely in the fact that they contain the certainty of God’s Freedom and Grace, both necessary to liberate our hu-man history from its fallen state to the original state of Grace planned by God since the beginning of creation. The faith journey we are to carry out Sunday in and Sunday out throughout this liturgical year will be loaded with the many wonders Jesus performs as a way of confirming the Scripture passage chosen to inaugurate his mission. The ultimate recipient of Luke’s writings, and the whole salvific activity of Jesus, is Theophilus -which literally means Beloved of God- so we can conclude that you and I are to receive this Grace as a personal gift from God, for at the end, we are all beloved chil-dren of the Almighty. Adsum, ¡El Espíritu de Señor esta sobre mí, porque me ha ungido…! A lo largo de este año litúrgico que hemos inaugurado con la pasada celebración del Adviento, el Evangelio según San Lucas será la guía segura que nos conducirá al encuentro con Jesús de Nazaret, el Cristo (Ungido) de Dios. Y que nos hará saborear las maravillas increíbles que el Salvador vino a ejecutar en nuestra historia mientras redimía la humanidad. Al presentarse en la sinagoga de Nazaret, el pueblo donde Él se había creado, fiel a su costumbre, el Señor se paró a leer y al proclamar las palabras del profeta Isaías, Le deja saber al pueblo que, en su persona, ese día, el pasaje proclamado acaba de cumplirse. Toda la actividad misionera del Salvador se verá impregnada desde el inicio de esta visión esperanzadora que Isaías ofrece de manera tan concreta en su profecía: -Llevar la Buena Nueva a los pobres, -Anunciar libertad a los cautivos, -Devolver la vista a los ciegos, -Liberar a los oprimidos… todas estas características de la era mesiánica son la base de una misión compasiva y llena de Dios que Jesús de Nazaret desarrollo entre el pueblo. Caminar con San Lucas Domingo a Do-mingo a lo largo de toda esta jornada litúrgica, tendría que volverse una oportunidad para experimentar en nuestra propia vida estas promesas que de manera tan certera mantuvieron el corazón de los creyentes en vigilia mientras la Redención llegaba. La Buena Nueva que hoy se grita desde el pulpito, no es únicamente para los oyentes de Jesús en aquella sinagoga, sino para todos los creyentes de todos los tiempos. San Lucas escribe toda su obra con el propósito de que Teófilo confirme su fe. Podríamos decir que cada uno de los bautizados está llamado a convertirse en destinatario de estas promesas de Salvación y Gracia. Teófilo es un nombre griego que significa “amado por Dios”, es por ello que cada uno de nosotros puede apropiarse la obra salvífica de Cristo. En virtud del Bautismo nos convertimos en hijos e hijas (amadísimos) del Padre misericordioso que al enviar a su hijo al mundo, no pensó únicamente en aquellos que por suerte compartirían la historia de su nacimiento, misión, muerte y resurrección, sino todos los demás que a lo largo de los tiempos nos uniríamos por virtud de la Fe al pueblo creyente. Per cogliere il significato di queste parole bisogna innanzitutto rendersi conto che un vangelo è qualche cosa di ben diverso di aneddoti relativi a Gesù e al suo insegnamento. Ogni evangelista è un testimone del figlio di Dio, e si propone di rispondere alla domanda che affiora nell’animo di ogni uomo a cui è stato dato di incontrare Gesù, sia sentendo parlare di lui, sia scoprendolo attraverso la vita di uno dei suoi discepoli: «Signore, chi sei?» Ciascuno di questi testimoni espone la propria fede nel Cristo sulla base di una storia—quella dei gesti e delle parole di Gesù— ma anche in funzione della propria esperienza e del proprio ambiente di vita. Per questo ogni evangelista ha una sua originalità, un suo accento diverso da quello degli altri. Tuttavia c’è un solo vangelo, perché c’è un solo Cristo a cui rimandano tutte le Scritture. Un giorno, nella sinagoga di Nazaret, tocca a Gesù commentare la lettura della Legge, accostandola a un testo profetico. Gli capita un brano di Isaia. Che cosa dirà? Si metterà a fare dotte considerazioni sull’anti-chità del testo? Gesù afferma semplice-mente: «Oggi si è adempiuta questa Scrittura». Colui nel quale «tutte le promesse di Dio sono divenute “sì”» (2 Cor.1,20) non può leggere la parola divina senza metterla in pratica, senza realizzarla immediatamente. Fioriscono così i miracoli a favore dei poveri, dei prigionieri, dei ciechi, degli oppressi. Anche noi non possiamo leggere il vangelo al passato. Dobbiamo leggerlo al presente, nell’oggi della nostra vita davanti a Dio. Allora anche il nostro tempo sarà «un anno di grazia del Signore». Il profeta di Nazaret. Luca, dopo avere esposto i criteri con cui ha posto mano al suo vangelo, dimostrandosi scrittore serio e degno di fide, racconta in che modo si sia presentato Gesù per la prima volta ai suoi concittadini di Nazaret. Il Cristo entra nella sinagoga per fare la lettura tradizionale del giorno e quella lettura gli consente di.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Roman Catholics, our marriage practices have their pedigree in ancient Rome. One of the major players in shaping our practices was the war-fare involved in building an empire. Soldiers van-ished and sometimes never returned. Women be-gan to manage their lives and to make decisions. The old family values were replaced by patriotic ones, and religion was more attuned to the gore and glory of battle, a religion of the state, not of the family. Weddings were still family celebrations, but had a public face. The bride wore a white toga and a red veil and walked to her new home. There, she and her husband joined their right hands and gave consent to each other, not relying on her father to give consent for her. Religion was optional: a pagan priest might be invited or not, and even without the ceremony, society agreed by common law that a year of living together equaled marriage consent. By the same token, marriage by consent also meant divorce was on the same legal footing, and did not require the courts or civil declarations. This is the world-view the first Christians inherited, and it was up to them to determine what was good and to hold marriage up to the light of the gospel. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. LIVING AS THE BODY OF CHRIST Some of Saint Paul’s best known and most be-loved imagery is contained in the passages from First Corinthians that we have heard last week and this week: the many gifts granted by the one same Spirit and the many members making up the one Body of Christ. Few passages from sacred scripture more accurately sum up how Christian vocations work together. Unlike some of Paul’s other writings, which are a product of the social and religious conventions of his time, these enable us to look at our own lives and the lives of those around us to discern what gifts, what vocations the Holy Spirit has given for the good of all. Una comunità in ascolto

Il cristianesimo è rivelazione: Dio si rivela e si comunica all’uomo storico. Tale rivelazione-comunione è resa presente nella storia tramite il segno della Parola (parola e gesto) al cui vertice sta Gesù di Nazaret, la Parola di Dio vivente incarnata. Non è tanto lo sforzo che fa l’uomo per raggiungere e conoscere Dio, quanto l’atto di Dio che si dona e si unisce all’uom.

Dio si rivela e si comunica all’uomo

Il Dio di Abramo, di Isacco, di Gesù Cristo non è un Dio imposto, non è un Dio che si rivela nei fenomeni naturali, ma nella storia degli uomini, si rivela e si comunica in modo perfetto e definitivo nell’uomo Gesù.

La Bibbia è la letteratura di un popolo: in essa sono raccolte le vicende, le sofferenze, le angosce, le gioie e le speranze della storia di un popolo; le riflessioni dei saggi, le liriche, gli inni dei poeti, le canzoni popolari fino alla vita delle primitive comunità cristiane. Tutto questo è certamente«rivelazione dell’uomo», ma è insieme «rivelazione di Dio». La storia passata è letta come parola di Dio perché alla sua luce

possiamo leggere la nostra storia, la nostra vita, e scoprire e incontrare Dio nelle vicende del nostro quotidiano.

Parola di Dio e comunità

La parola di Dio, però, lungi dall’alienare l’uomo, intende promuovere una fedeltà radicale alla condizione umana.

La prima lettura ci manifesta il rapporto fra la parola di Dio qual è contenuta nella Bibbia e la comunità. Il gesto di Neemia ci dice che il popolo di Dio per ricostruirsi dopo lo sfacelo dell’esilio ricerca la sua più profonda identità e unità nella parola di Dio. Anche oggi (e sempre) la Chiesa ritrova la sua identità nella parola di Dio. Senza la parola di Dio la Chiesa è «nulla». La Chiesa è sempre in religioso ascolto della parola di Dio: da questa viene adunata e ne dipende totalmente; da essa deve lasciarsi continuamente«giudicare» e contestare.

D’altra parte la parola di Dio risuona in tutta la sua verità solo in lei; e la sua ragione d’essere è nell’annunciare questa parola e nel testimoniarla come fedele discepola di Cristo, pienezza di tutta la rivelazione.

La Chiesa pertanto non proclama un’astratta ideologia umana, ma la Parola che si è fatta carne in Cristo, Figlio di Dio, maestro e redentore di tutti gli uomini.

Il Cristo capo della Chiesa (seconda lettura) è il Cristo maestro, il Cristo-Parola (vangelo). E' lui che unifica la molteplicità e diversità delle membra in un solo corpo, è lui che unendo con la sua parola viva le menti e i cuori crea l’unità della fede.

La lettura evangelica ci rivela l’attualità della parola di Dio e il modo cristiano di leggerla. «Oggi si è adempiuta questa scrittura che voi avete udita con i vostri orecchi». (Lc 4,21).

Oggi si è compiuta questa Scrittura...

Senza esagerare possiamo affermare che oggi le chiacchiere degli uomini pervadono l'universo. Quando l'umanità godeva di un migliore silenzio la voce di Dio, trasmessa per mezzo dei profeti, trovava una migliore accoglienza e sortiva i suoi benefici effetti. Quando un intero popolo si accorge di aver smarrito e disatteso per lungo tempo il libro della legge prorompe in un pianto di pentimento e poi compresa la lettura del sacerdote Esdra, esplode la gioia del Signore che diventa la sua forza. Anche Gesù entrato nella sinagoga, legge nel rotolo del profeta Isaia: «Lo Spirito del Signore è sopra di me; per questo mi ha consacrato con l'unzione, e mi ha mandato a portare ai poveri il lieto annuncio, a proclamare ai prigionieri la liberazione e ai ciechi la vista; per rimettere in libertà gli oppressi, e proclamare l'anno di grazia del Signore». Egli applica a sé quell'annunzio profetico. Diventa il testimo-ne vivente della fedeltà di Dio. Rivela la sua missione intesa come adempimento di promesse antiche. È un an-nuncio solenne dell'avvento dei tempi messianici. È anche indirettamente l'esplicita rivelazione della sua natura divina, del mandato ricevuto dal Padre, della sua unzione sacerdotale, regale e profetica, della sua consacrazione ed infine del suo compito di redentore. Egli viene a proclamare la liberazione totale dei prigionieri dai vincoli del peccato e della morte, viene per ridare la vista ai ciechi, per annunziare il tempo della grazia e della riconcilia-zione. Così Gesù diventa maestro per tutti noi che vogliamo leggere la Parola di Dio in modo veramente sapien-ziale. C'è una attualizzazione continua di quella Parola, che sgorga dalla stessa eternità di Dio e si cala nel nostro tempo senza perdere il valore della perennità. Ci fa comprendere che quella parola è sempre viva ed attuale, con-serva integra la forza che da Dio stesso proviene e come tale va accolta. Si attua in ciascuno di noi quando la in-carniamo nella nostra vita. Potremmo anche noi costatare che quella parola si adempie in noi quando è vissuta nella fedeltà. Diventa la lampada ai nostri passi, luce sul nostro cammino, nutrimento di verità per tutta la nostra esistenza. Uno dei doni grandi del Concilio Vaticano II è stata proprio la riscoperta della Parola di Dio come motivo di unione a Dio, come riscoperta delle verità ultime ed è anche ciò a cui ci esorta continuamente il Papa Frances-codi leggere il Vangelo.

LA VIDA DEL CUERPO DE CRISTO Algunas de las imágenes más conocidas y queridas de san Pablo se encuentran en los pasajes de la primera carta a los corintios que hemos escuchado la semana pasada y hoy: los muchos dones de un mismo Espíritu y los muchos miembros que componen el Cuerpo de Cristo. Pocos pasajes de la Sagra-da Escritura resumen con mayor claridad cómo las vocaciones cristianas trabajan en colaboración. A diferencia de otros escritos de san Pablo, producto de las convenciones sociales y religiosas de su época, estos nos permiten mirar nuestra propia vida y la vida de los que están a nuestro alrededor para discernir los dones, la vocación que el Espíritu Santo nos ha dado para el bien de todos. Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

“DO NOT BE SAD, AND DO NOT WEEP” “Do not be sad,” Nehemiah said, “and do not weep” (9:9). Our days are holy when they are lived in the pres-

ence of God. So why do we weep? Not because God is not present to us. That’s impossible. We weep because we are not present to God. We lose ourselves in our fears and our wishes that things would be different than they are.

The people of Nazareth sat down to listen. Jesus sat with them, and opened up the book of Isaiah. And what passage did he turn to? A message of consolation, the promise of “glad tidings to the poor . . . liberty to captives . . . recovery of sight to the blind” and freedom for the oppressed. Then when all eyes were fixed on him, he declared, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:18, 21).

When is that “today”? Is it yet to come? If so, then Jesus was mistaken. Is it already past? If so, then it is not today. “Today” is now, always now.

WE PLAY OUR PART . . . TODAY Paul tells us that we are “Christ’s body.” He explains that in the church there are apostles, prophets, and teach-

ers, as well as gifts of mighty deeds, “healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues” (1 Corinthians 12:28). In other words, a lot of different gifts, a lot of different jobs.

In God’s work—work like setting captives free and giving sight to the blind—we have our part to play. Our part is not to fall down on our faces and weep because we haven’t done more. Our part is to recognize and acknowledge what we have done, see what else we might do, and then walk out into today and do it.

God has made this year a “year acceptable to the Lord” and this day a “holy day.” God is present to us and we need to be present to God and to God’s world. We each have our part to play, our contribution to make. Each of us can make God’s world more peaceful, more joyful, healthier, and freer. This year! Today!
