SUMMER SCRIPTURE SERIES:

HOW TO PRAY THE PSALMS

by Father Peter Heasley, Parochial Vicar of St. John

the Evangelist, Goshen

The psalms are poetry inspired by God to raise our

spirits to him in praise, lament, joy, and hope. In this

course, we learn to pray the psalms as poetry, while

studying their history, composition, and role in the life

of the Church.

The course is in four parts over four weeks, on

Wednesdays: July 15, 22, 29, and August 5, 2015.

Each class is given twice, at 10am and 7pm, and runs

about an hour.

The classes will be held in the 8th Grade Classroom

of Saint John School, 77 Murray Avenue, Goshen.

For more information call St. John’s parish office at:

(845) 294-5328.

Join Fr. Heasley for this special and informative

summer series.

IMPROVEMENTS, REARRANGING AND

TRYING NEW THINGS AT

OUR LADY OF MT. CARMEL

Over the course of the past year several people have

spoken to me about some difficulties with our worship

space and improvements they would like to see. I find

myself in agreement with those who point to our

flooring and speak of a need for improvements there,

and also with those who feel our lighting is inadequate.

I hope that in the next two years we can fix these

problem areas - in time for the 25th anniversary of our

Church. We will need to get some estimates and raise

the needed funds. I have no doubt that we can do it.

I have heard from some people that they are unable to

see the lectern and lector due to the pillar in the

sanctuary. Since we cannot remove the pillar let’s see

if sight lines improve by moving the lectern to the other

side of the sanctuary.

Another concern that has been expressed is the lack of

reverence and quiet in the Church. I am perhaps one of

the biggest offenders of that as I often stop by a pew to

say hello. On an experimental basis we are moving the

tabernacle into the sanctuary from its present location.

We will put the statue of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel

there, and perhaps the baptism font from the original

Church.

Now when entering the pew the proper form of

reverence is a genuflection or a bow to the tabernacle.

All of these changes have been discussed by the Litur-

gy Committee and the Pastoral Council.

Let’s see how they work for us. This is only an

experiment and we will evaluate it before Christmas.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Fr. John

ANOINTING OF THE SICK

If you know someone who is sick and shut-in and

would like to receive the Sacrament of the

Anointing of the Sick, please call the Pr iory at

343-4121 so that Fr. John, Fr. Vincent or

Fr. Anthony can visit.

COMMUNION FOR THE HOMEBOUND

If you know someone who is homebound and unable to

come to church, if they would like to receive the

Eucharist you may also call the Pr iory at the same

number for a minister to visit with the Eucharist.

Our goal is to ensure that everyone who desires an

anointing or that those who wish to receive the

Eucharist but are unable to come to Mass is visited by

Fr. John, Fr. Vincent, Fr. Anthony or a

Eucharistic Minister.
