Apocalyptic prophecies have been part of Judeo-Christian teaching from the beginning. The Book of Daniel is written in the apocalyptic genre, set in the Babylonian captivity. Today’s Gospel is part of a larger discourse by Jesus which belongs to the same style. Along with the last book of the bible, the Book of Revelation, this discourse of Jesus is the most important of Christian apocalyptic writing. This kind of writing is very difficult to interpret. Sometimes it contains mysterious and symbolic language which is hard to correlate with specific historical events. Jesus speaks of the sun being darkened, the moon not giving light, the Son of Man coming in clouds, the angels gathering the elect from the four winds. Prior to this, he speaks of war, earthquakes, famine, and the persecution of the Church. These descriptions are easier to understand, but they aren’t very helpful in pinpointing exactly when the end will come. There have been war, earthquakes, and famine throughout history. Jesus says that no one knows the day or the hour, and following that, the Church has always been skeptical of any predictions about the date of the end of the world. The Church teaches that since the Ascension of Christ we have been living in the last days. At some time, time will be up, and Christ will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. On the one hand, Jesus cautions us against believing in false predictions about when He will come again, and on other, he tells us, “Learn from the fig tree.” Unlike many other trees in ancient Israel, the fig tree was seasonal, and one could tell that summer was about to come when it sprouted leaves. Jesus invites us to a prayerful discernment about the meaning of world events and how they fit into God’s plan of salvation. Apocalyptic literature is about the fundamental conflict between good and evil, light and darkness, God’s rule and those opposed to it. This writing has always been valued more during those times when the Church was suffering. Christians understood their situation as part of a larger spiritual conflict in which the forces of evil waged war against the Bride of Christ. The promise of Christ to come again gave them hope that He would rescue them and punish evildoers. This hope has found partial fulfillment throughout Christian history, as Christ has repeatedly delivered the Church from evils, both internal and external. But there will come an hour that will be the darkest, the hour when all seems lost, when Christ will accomplish a reversal as stunning as the Resurrection itself. He will usher in the final transformation of all reality for the good, a new heavens and a new earth. - Fr. Anthony
