La Solemnidad del Bautismo del Señor Hoy la Iglesia celebra la solemnidad del bautismo de nuestro Señor. Esto pone fin a la temporada Navideña. La Iglesia recuerda la segunda manifestación o epifanía de Nuestro Señor que tuvo lugar con motivo de Su bautismo en el Jordán. Jesús descendió al río para santificar sus aguas y darles el poder de engendrar hijos de Dios. El evento toma la importancia de una segunda creación en la que interviene toda la Trinidad. En la Iglesia oriental, esta fiesta se llama Teofanía porque en el bautismo de Cristo en el río Jordán Dios apareció en tres personas. Cristo no necesitaba el bautismo de Juan. Aunque apareció en la "sustancia de nuestra carne" y fue reconocido "desde fuera como nosotros mismos", fue absolutamente sin pecado e impecable. Él le confirió al agua el poder del verdadero Bautismo que eliminaría todos los pecados del mundo: "He aquí el Cordero de Dios, he aquí el que quita el pecado del mundo". Muchos de los incidentes que acompañaron el bautismo de Cristo simbolizan lo que sucedió en nuestro bautismo. En el bautismo de Cristo, el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre Él; en nuestro Bautismo la Trinidad tomó su morada en nuestra alma. En Su bautismo, Cristo fue proclamado el "Hijo Amado" del Padre; en nuestro bautismo nos convertimos en los hijos adoptivos de Dios. En el bautismo de Cristo se abrieron los cielos; En nuestro bautismo se nos abrió el cielo. En su bautismo Jesús oró; después de nuestro bautismo debemos orar para evitar el pecado real.

Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord. This brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons of God. The event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes. In the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany because at the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan God appeared in three persons. Christ did not need the baptism of John. Although He appeared in the "substance of our flesh" and was recognized "outwardly like unto ourselves", He was absolutely sinless and impeccable. He conferred upon the water the power of the true Baptism which would remove all the sins of the world: "Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him Who takes away the sin of the world". Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's baptism are symbolical of what happened at our Baptism. At Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At His baptism

Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons of God. At Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. At His baptism Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin.

The theme of this year's Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is "Justice, Only Justice, You Shall Pursue." Christian communities "become newly aware of their unity as they join in a common concern and a common response to an unjust reality. At the same time, confronted by these injustices, we are obliged, as Christians, to examine the ways in which we are complicit. Only by heeding Jesus’s prayer 'that they all may be one' can we witness to living unity in diversity. It is through our unity in Christ that we will be able to combat injustice and serve the needs of its victims."
